Yes, we mentioned the C word. But only because we're updating our page of Christmas party dresses and wondered if you could help us? Could you post a link to any particular dresses you have your eye on? Are there particular styles, colours or fabrics you look for? Or stay away from? Any brands that you know will always deliver a winner? Because of the length/quality/price tag/fit? Thanks smile

What on earth is a Christmas party dress? I don't think I've been to a Christmas party since I left school eleventy million years ago. I obviously lead a very sheltered life.

Hi paintingthetownred. I didn't mean I wouldn't want to be noticed, I quite like it especially if I have made a bit of an effort. I meant because of the style of the dress and the colour I would be noticed and that might mean that people would remember it if I wore it more than a couple of times. I think it would suit me but what looks great online modelled by a beautiful 20 something young woman might not have quite the same impact on an ok on a good day 60 something woman! I am quite a confident dresser though and generally know what suits me.

I remember when I was in my 20's and jumpsuits (they were called catsuits back then) were fashionable I made myself one to wear to a posh evening do with the firm I worked for. It had a long zip right down the front and when I went to the loo the zip broke. Thankfully it was AFTER I'd spent a penny but I couldn't do it back up so had to wear my coat all night to preserve my modesty! Never again.

Years ago I made a dress for Xmas parties made of red velvet.
Can't remember the pattern exactly, but it had a sweetheart neckline. Like this but long sleeves and just below knee length:

I am fortunate that I can make my own “occasion “ outfits, I have made jumpsuits and find those with a side zip the easiest to negotiate for a party evening. I usually make a new outfit for NYEve when we have a local party but This year I’m wearing an outfit I made to wear to a evening wedding party- black lace over a navy underdress with rouleaux buttons all down the back.

I’m looking for a decent maternity party dress. I never get invites to Christmas parties and typically this year I have. I’ll be 20+ weeks by then so no longer able to hide under loose tops etc. All the maternity dresses I’ve seen look horrible or unflattering for my busty short stature.

hey juno, why wouldn't you want to be noticed.
If you can carry it off hon, why not? Be proud.

I would look a total twit in it though.
But then we all know on some level what suits us eh

Thank you petra 14.45 and janeainsworth 14.54 it rather lush isn't it? You are both quite right I should have a party. The dress is still a bit out of my price range on a cost per wear basis though. It's the kind of dress in which I would hope and expect to be noticed so I couldn't really wear it very often. A well cut pair of narrow black velvet trousers with a lovely top is probably much more practical. I may have a look at Brand Alley, thank you Parklife1 16.44.

Several people have mentioned the difficulty of going to the loo in a jump suit. Surely some jumpsuits have a fastening underneath so that you don't have to take the whole thing off? Had a problems with my ski suit the only time I went skiing.
Who invents such fiendish suits?

Parklife1 Sat 26-Oct-19 16:44:44

Have a look at Brand Alley. They sell brands like Phase 8/and Hobbs, French Connection and designer stuff too, at reduced prices. I don’t think they’re current season, but if I can get a Phase 8 dress for £35-£45 I’m happy.

I am going to a dressy party tomorrow night and I’m wearing black satin jeans and a grey chiffon top trimmed with sequins. Silver bag and shoes. The whole outfit cost under £100. I hate spending money on clothes I won’t get a wear out of

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 16:28:17

I must check, there were a lot of moths around this summer shock

lemongrove Sat 26-Oct-19 16:27:21

I have some black velvet trousers ( if the moths haven’t got at them) bought about six years ago and very useful with a glam top/tunic.

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 16:27:19

I must say that 'Christmas party dress' made me think of ones for six year old little girls, not adult women.

BlueBelle Sat 26-Oct-19 16:25:08

I don’t think I’ve ever had a Christmas party dress since I was about 11
I just wear the nicest outfit I have in my wardrobe and hope I look nice

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 16:22:53

Oh good, thank you petra and paintingttr
I may look for a Christmassy top (nothing too OTT)

petra Sat 26-Oct-19 16:17:39

Callistamon
No, your ok. Narrow velvet trousers have always been good taste and style, and always will be. ?

paintingthetownred Sat 26-Oct-19 16:17:37

Callistemon. I love velvet trews. Especially those with some silk in, sure they will look fab.

paintingthetownred Sat 26-Oct-19 16:15:59

take your point eh grapefruitpip, I'm obviously needing to put some more effort in to live up to my username as haven't been on one of those nights out for quite some time...lol

Can only suggest you try the 'lets all pop off to the ladies to do a debrief of the night so far girls' approach.

That way, if you opt for the jumpsuit and get into difficulties...after a few pints, you'll have some girlfriends to hand to help you out...

P.S. not sure what the 'right person' is...as posted by someone, still it is nice to talk online about colours and dresses and to get some new ideas about things certainly I hadn't thought of...istn't it. I know boots are strictly speaking off topic on this thread, couldn't help getting carried away though...

grapefruitpip Sat 26-Oct-19 16:02:21

I love the jumpsuit thingy but how does it work after a few pints? That would be my worry. £90 on the floor of the toilet?

paintingthetownred Sat 26-Oct-19 15:54:05

Understand poppy red. I think it was the sustainable plus comfort thing that made seasalt on my radar, plus we are not too far from cornwall here. I like the red one though someone mentioned earlier, especially since it nicely covers up arms, however it really wouldn't work for me - as I would look silly in it, honest.

All in all I like the cost per wear thing that someone mentioned.

Lovely (and comfortable boots possibly party boots here from Hotter. Some of their styles a bit naff I find but these I like: nohttps://www.hotter.com/gb/en/delight-boots-deligsuksl-product--1?fit=Standard+Fit&colour=Black%20/%20Floralt with the red dress...tho

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 15:54:03

Are narrow velvet trousers out now Teetime?
I own a pair, worn twice

I never know what's in or out

Callistemon Sat 26-Oct-19 15:51:10

It's lovely but I am not the right person!

Poppyred Sat 26-Oct-19 15:43:23

I will give you that Painting. - could possibly pass for a party dress, not my style but yes I can see where you’re coming from .....but definitely not the first place that I would look.
