Ideas to add body to fine limp

I have always had fine hair which lacks body. It is worse now since going onto Anastrazole after a lumpectomy for breast cancer and it also seems to have less body since we had a water softener installed a couple of years ago.

I have tried two brands of shampoo and conditioner which claim to add body and volume to hair but they have made no noticeable difference. I am also trying different styling products, the spray on ones seem to make my hair very stiff and dry and the mousses haven’t helped so far. I have tried Percy and Reed styling mousse which is supposed to add volume but, although expensive, it had no effect. I have also tried Tigi Small Talk which was a little better. Last Saturday I watched QVC and ordered a product which seemed to work wonders on the models but has had absolutely no effect on my hair, thankfully I can send it back for a refund as it was expensive.

So I am wondering if anybody has any recommendations I can try.

I wondered the same, Jane43, but this Daily Mail article from 2011 says that LincoBeer is history.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have tried Elvive and Paul Mitchell products but will try the other suggestions eventually. I wish they made small trial sizes as it works out very expensive and I hate wasting the products. I have thought of supplements so will give them a try. I did remember that when I was a teenager my Mum and I used to use beer shampoo and am trying to remember the name. We also used to use water from the water tub outside to rinse our hair which contradicts that our soft water may be to blame. We both had fine hair but a lot of it then.

Got2b volumising styling powder, cheap and effective but don't use too much .

I concur that Elvive is very good. I have used their thickening shampoo for years with matching conditioner and my hair is now a lot thicker and has body. Can recommend for fine hair.

Kim, I too am sceptical about hairdressing mystique.

I'm regularly confused by the word 'good' when applied to hairdresser. Should I simply replace it with 'expensive' or do I have to do more footwork than that, please?

I have very thin fine hair. About seven years ago (not sure exactly) my hairdresser asked if they could try out a new product which more or less guarantees that your hair will look thicker if used for 30 days. there was a shampoo and conditioner. They also do a mousse but that was too stiff for my hair. The product is called NIOXIN and it comes with numbers 1-5 depending upon the type of hair you have. Mine is no.4 for coloured and rapidly thinning hair. I found it really good and the hairdresser remarked after three months what a difference it had made. I eventually changed hairdressers but continued to by the NIOXIN online. I buy it by the litre. The shampoo lasts for about six months and the conditioner lasts about three months. I wash my hair everyday. It is worth looking at several sites because the price varies depending where you buy it from. My hair is no thinner now than it was when I started with NIOXIn and does look a bit thicker. I hope this helps.

Styling wax makes fine short flyawy hair easy to push into the shape you want.

I like it although but want to wash it out every day .

For years I had fine, short, layered hair which was often flat. A year ago I decided to grow it into a bob, all one length, just below my ears. It was hard, but I’m now so pleased that I persevered - it appears much thicker and shinier. I try not to wash it too often, and find that dry shampoo after a few days works wonders - it definitely adds much more body. Of course the hairdresser with her blow drying and straighteners makes it looks much better than I could ever do - but that would soon become a very expensive habit!

I second taking a good B complex supplement. I have to take steroids for PMR and knew that hair loss is e of many side effects so I started taking B complex and a powdered marine collegen every day and so far no hair loss. My skin is better too, I think that's the collegen.
If your hair is naturally thin though it may not do much other than make you healthier overall. Worth a try but not an overnight solution.

Bumble and Bumble hair thickening products seem to come out well in reviews.

I use Paul Mitchell Avapuhui shampoo,no conditioner as this makes your hair too soft. Then I use Paul Mitchell Thicken Up followed by Paul Mitchell Hair Boost. The last two products have worked really well.

Waterman's shampoo and conditioner seems to give my hair more body. I do have new baby hairs growing so maybe it helps with regrowth and it doesn't irritate my sensitive scalp.

I agree with Elegran, sound advice and works for my fine hair. Do not let hairdresser cut too many layers or ' thin ' your hair. A club cut makes it look heavier and thicker I have found.

Jane43, my hair is fine too, and I've had hair loss. I'm now using a bar shampoo - (from Friendly soaps: www.friendlysoap.co.uk/shampoo/
- there is "transition" information on their website) and I think it's better for my hair as well as for the environment. (It comes in a small cardboard carton which is more easily recycled than yet another plastic bottle.) For me, it works out our cheaper too. My hair now seems softer and "happier". DH uses it as well.

Hi Jane 43, my hair is very fine and gets worse with age. The products I use are Aveda Pure Abundance Shampoo and Conditioner, its expensive but lasts a long time because you only have to use a tiny amount of each. Good luck if you find a good remedy let us all know please.

Try & take a supplement containing Biotin & B vitamins skin , hair & nails . Great improvement in my hair . Also grew out all my layers with a blunt cut , loads better .

My doctor told me that although I am far from anaemic, my iron levels are nowhere near the optimum level for hair growth, so now I take a supplement for hair, nails and skin which includes iron, and have noticed an improvement.

I also have fine hair which tends to shed whenever I wash it.
So I try not to wash it more than once a week.

I find that if I use conditioner after shampooing, it comes out even more, so I don’t use conditioner any more.
Instead, I am using a leave in conditioner which seems a little better. A blow dry spray for hair drier. It always looks ok for a couple of days, and then it’s back to a lank look.

I have tried, and wasted loads of money on different products.
These so called celebrity hairdressers always seem to invent another must have product. Trying now to use up must have products.

Jane43 my hair sounds just like yours. After washing it I brush it through then tip my head upside down and dry hair, roots first, scrunching with my hands as I go. I use a brush to sort my bit of fringe first. When it’s dry I brush it into style, layered bob, and put in Velcro rollers with a quick spray of hairspray all over and leave to cook for as long as needed or what time you’ve got. 20/30 mins does it for me and there’s always something you can do in that time......I often do lick of make up then if I’m going out.

I have short fine, and now thinning hair. I dont use conditioner because it makes my fine hair heavy, and thickening shampoos tend to make hair difficult to handle without additional conditioner. I've tried loads.
I make sure my hair is cut well, shiny, not coloured, so it's thin but healthy.
Hair type is often hormonal and genetic so wonder treatments will make no difference. I wouldn't be averse to trying a hairpiece for special occasions.

Rosina Sat 01-Feb-20 10:06:20

Some excellent advice here to keep you amused for many a hair washing session! My hair drives me crazy - I have a fair amount of it but it is baby fine and getting worse as time goes on it seems.
I now use a bar shampoo, which seems to keep it calmer, and when I have dried it a liberal dosing of dry shampoo at the roots seems to give it some body. I also keep any products to a minmum if I use a styling gel or similar - they do seem to weigh down fine hair and can make it feel sticky.

Now my hair is growing back I am using Watermans Grow More shampoo, conditioner and elixir. I am told it is very good.

Summerstorm Sat 01-Feb-20 10:02:06

After 6 months of pretty intensive chemo I didn’t loose my hair but it was a lot thinner and felt like cotton wool. A friend bought me Viviscal shampoo and conditioner i felt it did help a lot. But another friend I bought it for after her treatment didn’t think it made any difference. Might be worth a try though

hulahoop Sat 01-Feb-20 10:00:03

I too have fine hair worse since having chemo its short I don't suit long hair ?I have tried different shampoos to no avail , I usually have it spiky but that soon drops ?So I am considering another style but don't know what yet there are some good suggestions on here I will give some of them a go as well.
