Does anyone have a favourite brand to recommend? I have been trying to be tempted by the clothes I see online but they don't even look nice on the pretty young models.

I have bought a few tops and bottoms from Debenhams and had to return half and a sleeveless frock sent in error from vera tucci.

I have put on weight over Lockdown and feel fat and old but a pretty summer dress which flatters, not too expensive would cheer me up..

I would normally try TKMax, Next or possibly M&S and John Lewis but all our shops are still closed in Scotland so it needs to be posted.

I'm not always aware of patterns so the sewing groups I'm in on Facebook help Grammaretto. People like to show their makes and I get more of an idea. Also quite a few of the independent pattern designers do tutorials or FaceBook Live when you can see the finished garment - often on the designer. Some of them show you hacks or put them on their site so you can do other things with one pattern. One design that you love can be made in many different fabrics or colours too.

Many of the independent designers are mentioned on the sewing thread but I do suggest you check if they have any YouTube videos. They are not necessary but they help.

Landsend have a lot of their stock on sale at the moment. Among the promotional emails in my in-box this morning there are two from them, one offering 60% off another with 50%! They may or may not have the size you want in the colour you want!

I've bought a few Gudrun Sjorden clothes in the past, still have them. I love the bright colours but have been disappointed in the quality and also realised the reason they don't look as good on me as the catalogue is that the models have layered several pieces together to create the look and to achieve a similar effect you'd have to spend hundreds of pounds!
I do like Andini, White Stuff and anything vaguely hippie, but that's my style and not for everybody.

Damart is showing more stylish clothing now, and less of the fuddy-duddy image it had.
Also, there is a sale on, with free p&p.

I like Roman and Klass, don't know where about you live, they are in The Gretna Village along with lots of other bargains!

I don’t buy my clothes from any of the places you ladies mention so best I keep mum.

Not being able to try on in store or with online, makes it harder but m and s has a sale and have some linen shift dresses that look pretty and aren’t that expensive.

Pattielove Thu 25-Jun-20 11:40:42

What about Roman originals. I have a lot of their clothes and they wash and keep lovely and not too expensive.

I’ve had a couple of Lookeiro boxes through lockdown and been very happy with most of my selections.
It’s a personal shopper service and uses lots of European brands I’d never heard of.
Basically you sign up and complete a profile online. The service costs £10 however if you keep even one item ( of the 5 they send) it’s deducted.
I’ll post my referral code which will give you a credit of £10 plus 10% off so you have nothing to lose. It’s easy to return unwanted items as well. LKJULIAM560

Phase eight.
Mint velvet.
H&M for T shirts.
M&S for cropped jeans.
Monsoon and local boutiques.

If I like it i’ll buy it but what’s the point in getting dressed up when there’s nowhere to go. Used to get dressed up a few times every week when playing bridge with friends but I don’t know when we’ll be allowed to do that again. I will have to ask Boris. It will be ages before we feel safe to eat out again but for now we’ll just enjoy sitting in the garden and enjoy this glorious weather☀️.

It’s T-Shirts and shorts every day and no eye makeup so I’m looking on the bright side!.

Kit and Kaboodle are very good and I've had a few lovely items from them, likewise Ruby and Daisy.... customer service and delivery are excellent.

Davida1968 Thu 25-Jun-20 12:44:30

Like Witzend, I love Seasalt. (Not cheap, but good quality and fairly traded). Also Sainsburys (their "Tu" range) have some super clothes, and are at the cheaper end of the market. Both recommended by me.

hapgran Thu 25-Jun-20 12:51:56

Boden sale!

Witzend Thu 25-Jun-20 13:32:01

Just to add, do have a look at the Poetry website. I’ve just received a very nice pair of trousers from them - it’s been quite a while since I’ve used them but I’m very pleased.
They’re not cheap and specialise in natural fabrics, esp. linen, in plain, often muted colours.
If it’s important to you, you do need to check ‘finer points’ before ordering, since some of their things are hand wash only - I avoid those!
Might add that I ordered my trousers (the first for a long time) in an ‘optimistic’ size, so although I was half expecting to have to return them, was v pleased to find that they’re not too small at all!

Mal44 Thu 25-Jun-20 13:42:18

Nobody has mentioned Adini.Very colourful dresses and tunics and sale items real bargains.

Puzzler61 Thu 25-Jun-20 13:47:53

I hadn’t heard of Poetry before Witzend.
I took a look, and thanks to you I’ve ordered a linen dress in their sale. ?

Marks and Spencer have a lovely range of linen shift dresses this summer. Beautiful colours, plain and patterned. Very flattering, short sleeved and sleeveless. I have bought several. They don't crease, nor do they require ironing. Oh yes, some with patch pockets too. Have also bought a linen shirt waister with side pockets.

Gajahgran Thu 25-Jun-20 13:54:27

Have you tried Thought Clothing. They have some lovely flattering dresses some flowery, some plain and a lot of them have pockets. All ethically produced.

I have been buying a lot of my clothes from Sainsbury's "Tu" range. Well designed and made, very reasonably priced and - wait for it - the majority of the jeans etc have lycra in them, so they s-t-r-e-t-c-h at those difficult times (like during lockdown) when you gain a little weight.

I must admit I've seen more attractive clothes there than I've seen in M&S for the past few years.
