I seem to have gone from Judi Dench to Camilla ?

Hello all, hope you are all well.

It's my hair! It does grow very quickly, but this is ridiculous.

Was last cut at the end of February, my usual short, spikey crop.

Now it's definitely looking a bit Camilla ish! The sides are past my earlobes (thank goodness, while it was making its way South, if it went into my ears it was so tickly, and not in a good way)

Trimmed the fringe a bit a while back, but that's now in my eyes again.

So, do I go back to the short crop, or continue to grow it?

I'm wondering if it might be lower maintenance longer, as the rate at which it grows means frequent trips to the salon to keep it in shape.

Just can't decide!

What's a banana clip Dillonsgranma? I can't really see it in your photo. Where do you buy them?

I regularly use clippers on my thick hair and get lots of compliments! smile

My last haircut was last October. I was due for a trim in January but didn't go as it hadn't grown much. My hair was very short and clipped around my ears and neck. As it has grown during lockdown I've trimmed it myself, allowing the layers to grow out. It's now an ear tip length short bob. Some top layers still have a few inches to go. So I'm going to leave it till next Spring, by then it should be layer free and long enough to restyle, somehow. I'm quite enjoying the feeling of hair that swings when I move.

Have my spiky short hair cut religiously every six weeks but haven't been to hairdressers for 5 months. My, very thick, hair has grown almost 3 inches so am going to persevere and let it grow long again. It will take longer to maintain but I will have the choice of wearing it long or tied back.

I use a banana clip. It’s scoops it up into a very soft high pony tail with tendrils and a fringe. Flattering on an old face!

I do like Camilla's mask

Oh how I wish that I had hair that would grow. My last short cut was in July 2019 and it has just about reached my ear lobes this July. I always had longer hair before that last cut, and it was so much easier to manage, either down or up. Short hair needs something doing to it every single day or it just sticks out or floats about, looking scraggy.

But it's even worse when it's longer and sticks out looking scraggy! As I'm discovering.

Hair trimming gadget. I don't need to pay for shortcomings. I have enough of those...

Mine has been urchin-style since I had my first child, who is now 42. The shagginess accompanying growing it has been the reason I’ve kept it short, but nobody sees me anymore so I’ve let it grow. My hairdresser agrees that the style I’ve chosen will work with the hair’s waviness. I’ll have to be patient, because it might take at least a year to grow the shortest layers, but to my surprise and horror I find that now I really look better with mascara. And I hate mascara with a vengeance!

I bought a shortcoming gadget on Amazon (made in China, as everything seems to be these days) and I used it to help trim my fringe. It seems OK and much easier than trying to hold it between my fingers. I've come dangerously close to drawing blood that way. I might persevere with that for a while. I can scrape my hair into a pathetically tiny pony tail now and pin it up. At least it'll give a hairdresser something to work with when I finally give in. My roots are showing badly though. Retouch kit at the ready. ?

I had a hair cut and blow dry last Friday. I have decided not to have it coloured until I can see what my natural colour is. So I decided to have it cut in shortish layers to aid the growing out process but last Thursday when we were having coffee after food shopping DH suddenly said he liked my hair the length it was so I had to have a rethink. It was a surprise as he has always liked short hair a la Jamie Lee Curtis. So I kept some of the length on the top but had it layered, thinned out and shaped into the neck; the grey is blending in nicely.

I wonder if Camilla will colour co-ordinate her masks every time?

My next door neighbour (who is 74) has had a short, stylish cut for years and, like all of us, over Lockdown it's really grown and she's now opted to keep it in a longer bob. Problem is that she actually looked stunning with her shorter cut and a bit messy with her new longer bob (not to mention older) - not that I'm going to tell her that! I'm having mine cut tomorrow and like the OP I still can't decide what to do with it - it's the longest it's been in the last 10 years so it seems a shame to just go back to the way it was, but not sure it suits me. Decisions, decisions.

Cut it! I went through various impersonating heads during lock down. I went from looking like Einstein (when I got up in the morning) to Bernie Eccleston (when I had tried to flatten it down), then Trump (when I went out in the wind) and finally a less coiffured Camilla Parker Bowles as it reached my ears! I normally have a short classic crop and last week I went for my first hair cut for 4 months and it feels INCREDIBLE! I am back to being who I normally am!

winterwhite Tue 28-Jul-20 12:20:00

I think of it the other way round - Camilla looking in the mirror and saying 'Golly I look just like Winterwhite!'?

GreenGran78 Tue 28-Jul-20 12:17:49

I had my hair cut to its usual short crop recently. My hairdresser told me that lots of her short-haired clients, having grown their hair while on lockdown, have opted to keep it longer, in a bob style.

I have very short hair which is also quite thick. My husband has used our clippers on it during lockdown and I also use an excellent pair of thinning scissors. I’ve had lots of compliments and people asking when I managed to get to the hairdressers. Thinking about not going back apart from an odd tidy up appointment. Will save a fortune!!

pen50 Tue 28-Jul-20 12:01:39

I have my hair very long, which I think looks better round my broad face, but I must admit it is now at the point where it's becoming higher maintenance than I would wish. It's dead straight and still more brown than grey. Brushing it is a bore and washing - which I do twice a week - is cruel and unusual punishment.

On the other hand people do seem to think I look younger than my years....

seadragon Tue 28-Jul-20 11:36:56

I've had every kind of hairstyle from extremely short to very long and up all the time. I even had it dyed a beautiful deep red so's people would think my son had got his beautiful hair from me! It made my eyes look very blue but the roots had grown in by the end of the week! Before lockdown I had stopped getting it cut for a while as it grows so fast and was becoming too expensive. I now wear it pinned up with a clip have a curlywurly 'fascinator' on top made of my own hair - which is oddly brown against the grey - which DH and I rather like

merlotgran Tue 28-Jul-20 10:49:34

We have to factor in mask wearing as well. I like the fact that my longer hair covers my ears even if I have it tied back with a few dangly bits.

A friend of mine put a comment on facebook yesterday about how long hair and a mask hides the chins and makes her look ten years younger. grin

I've always wanted a Judi Dench but never had the courage; for years I've worn a jaw length bob, which seems to suit most people, but my difficult thick mop of fine hair has made it a trial at times to achieve a smooth, turned under look. During lockdown it has reached my shoulders - and I like it! It is easy to do; a quick blow dry with some styling mousse and it looks quite casual and modern, and when the temperature rises or it look straggly - up it goes into a comb with a few trailing ends to soften the look, or back into a bunch, again artfully 'untidy'. I had the ends trimmed but asked the hairdresser to take off the minimum. I think I might have found my rest of life hairdo - why not try it Phoenix - It's versatile and you may find like me that you are spending a lot less time on hair.

Aepgirl Tue 28-Jul-20 10:32:04

I’ve been to my hairdresser since lockdown, and asked her to ‘cut it long’. I had had it quite short for a long time and started to like it longer during lockdown, so I just wanted it trimmed. Still happy with the result.

Lupin Tue 28-Jul-20 10:24:38

I'd always had long hair - all one length. Then later I had it cut into a chin level, all one length bob. I liked it - it suited me - but was quite a lot of work.
Now, after a brush with chemo, it's very short. During lockdown it grew to a mad scientist look, so am very relieved that I have now had it cut into a wash it and leave style. The natural colour took some getting used to. My hair has now gone wavy and does what I tell it to do. It feels like someone else's hair growing out of my head. The parting, that relentlessly stayed in the same place has also migrated to the other side of my head. A new me, and I like it.
I hope you find a style you like.
