Is longer hair on a 69 year old ok?
(133 Posts)Hi, my hair is thick, wavy, curly and a darkish grey many years ago I was dark brown. I’m thinking of growing it to about chin length longish layers and wonder what people on here think about this for a hairstyle for a lively 69 year old.
I’ve a short messy style which I don’t like and looking at photos of me, I’ve had it short for a while and it never looks good - it sticks up and out and I can’t seem to style it. I don’t know why I ever went for a short style in the first place.
If I look at photos of me when I was in my 40s and 50s it’s was longer and layered and seemed to suit me better.
Basically I don’t know why I’ve ended up with short hair when it doesn’t suit me so I thought I’d ignore hairdressers for a while and grow it outta about chin length. My worry is looking a bit like mutton ...
I am 71 and I have longish hair, it is past my shoulders, I have it cut with layers, which puts waves into my hair. I always had short hair, since my late teens, but after seeing my bus pass photo, decided longer would be better. You should always wear your hair how you want to, so long as it is clean and tidy, it is no one else's business. Go for it !
My hair is long and although i have plenty of it is is very fine. When it is short it is a nightmare to look after, needs washing and blow drying every day to get a bit of oomph in it. Now it is below my shoulders i just put it up in a pony tail, twist if around and secure with long pins and i have a stylish looking bun. Not massive but not too small either. My biggest bugbear is my fringe. It doesn't suit me without one and if it is not cut right it gives me so much grief. I never wear my hair down that just doesn't suit me at all.
I agree , longer length hair or shorter it’s about feeling happy and confident. In Spain/Italy many women have longer hair and it looks so elegant even totally grey. I’m 57 and still dyeing mine as the grey is very patchy, though there’s plenty of it ! You are so lucky to have wavy hair too !! I’m envious as mine is poker straight and I end up curling it twice a week to get a very slight wave even . Go for it!!
I am 61 and due to lock down have now hair half way down my back. Its dyed dark blond and for some unknown reason has been getting curler each year. I have great comments and will keep growing it if I can. I also know a lovely lady of 80 who has very straight waist length hair and is perfect. Do what makes you happy.
Just google images of women over sixty with long hair. You'll see how many options you have to choose from. Go for it.
Go for it Itsnell ! Lovely head of hair. Age is nothing really - just a record of the years we have been alive. Just promise that you will post another picture when it has grown to a length that suits you and that you are happy with.
Itsnell, wear it how you want. I have long hair but wear it up all of the time as I look awful with it down. My hair is grey, slightly curly, goes frizzy easily and looks frumpy like the queen's hair if I have it short. I find I don't have to bother with it so much when it is long, I had years of keeping it short but I was always washing it and messing with it. Go for an easy life and do what suits you!
I stopped cutting my hair before lockdown and so it is waist length now. I do wear it up but the twisted ends are quite long now and form ringlets which stick up in a variety of different shapes each day. One variation is a teddy boy style 'quiff' and there have been a variety of hairy 'fascinators!! I really enjoy the daily surprise, especially because the 'quiff'/fascinator is a brownish colour in contrast with the gray/white of newer hair. I don't really care what others think. I'm having fun, fun, fun!!!
Go for a longer length if that is what you want, don’t worry about what other people might think, it’s nothing to do with anyone else 69 is not old, I think that we all worry too much about what other people might think, as I am getting older I realise we spend far too much time worrying and not doing what we want, so now I do and wear what I am comfortable in and I don’t worry about what others think, I just think to myself, If you don’t like what your looking at Don’t Look?
WOW your hair is lovely Itsnell.
Itisnell, overwhelming approval of the changes the Covid virus has unwittingly made in our lives—- and shaken the status quo. Even in our hairstyles!! Wear your hair longer if it pleases you, I have and I am 75!! I do love sheep anyway !!!!
There was a time when long hair on older women was a no-no but now it seems it's all about condition and style. Quite a few years ago model agencies started looking for both male and female 'silver foxes' and women with longer hair. Mine is just going grey and my hairdresser uses silver enhancing mousse before she dries it. And I agree with the posters who say long hair is much easier to manage. I've had long and I've had short, and apart from having to wash short hair so often because it gets greasy, I find long hair can look good every day with the help of my trusty hairdryer.
I shall soon be 69 and my hair reaches my waist. I wear it up and have no intention of cutting it.
I'm 66, and my greyish hair is well below waist-length now (must get DH to cut it for me...). Personally, I think it makes me look like a witch (well, I do keep a broomstick in the hall), but I've actually been complimented on it in the past by complete strangers. I used to colour it with Movida semi-permanent colour, but stopped when that was discontinued - 10 years ago? - as I had a mild reaction to a patch test with the replacement.
Mine is long enough to almost touch my butt and im 65. Grow your hair as long as you want, its your hair your business.
I used to have short hair - appropriate for my 60s (blah blah) but it grew under the first Lockdown, and I decided to see if I could keep it. Discussed it with my hairdresser (who said that 50% of her clients had decided the same thing). It's now past my chin and flicked up. It's SO easy to manage (as long as I keep it in good condition) and, having seen a photo of myself recently, much more flattering than my short cut ever was. I would say do what YOU want and also go and read the poem that begins "When I'm old, I shall wear purple" by Jenny Joseph. Your hair, your life. Go for it!
You have lovely hair but it should be worn how you like it. There are some very old fashioned ideas out there which try to dictate what older people should or should not do. Personally, I intend to get older disgracefully! I worried about fitting in as a young person but I've long since outgrown those shackles and don't intend to go back to them.
Go for it, it's your hair. Dreadlocks, bald, multi-coloured, mullet, shaved, Mohican. Take your pick.
I’m the same age as you. Quite grey but have it coloured light brown and wear it shoulder length. There’s a huge difference between modern and youthful and “mutton.” Let’s face it we might as well look and feel good and a bit glamorous while we can. Hair can easily be cut anyway. Ask anyone you know who has nice hair to recommend a hairdresser you can use when they open again. Think of Helen Mirren or other ladies who look youthful and attractive. I think we owe it to ourselves to look our best.
I used to watch the original Dr Finlay in 1968 or so, Finlay had a house keeper Janet Macpherson who was older and had a wonderful long plait that went down to her waist. I decided I wanted one like that & now in my mid sixties I still feel like that though my hair never seems to grow longer than boob level. Sod what anyone else thinks, do what you want
Have you seen Jane Seymour?? Same age and gorgeous long hair. As I have long hair, way past my shoulders since lockdown, she is my new role model! Long hair is so easy to manage too. Pony tail on a bad day and chignon on a good!
I would love to grow my hair (I'm 68) but its so thin and fine that I have to have it really short. I don't think age should define our hairstyles.
