Is longer hair on a 69 year old ok?

I am the same age as you and during the first lockdown it grew and I quite liked it so have kept it longer. I do have the tips taken off to keep it in good condition though

Not seeing my hairdresser for months resulted in my hair growing to shoulder length - and I love it. Friends have said it suits me, it is easier to manage, and if it gets unruly (and I have very naughty, unmanageable hair) I can tie it back with a band or put it up with a clip. Try it! You might be pleasantly surprised, and you can always have it cut shorter again.

Chin length isn't long! I'm almost your age and started off at chin length but 3" longer by the end of lockdown. I rather liked it a bit longer, but home hair colouring meant that it was in terrible condition so my daughter chopped it off for me.
I think that you can afford to have it a little longer if its curly as it lifts the length up.

I shall shortly be 80 and I wear my hair in a ponytail. It's easy to control and I don't need any help with cutting off the split ends

I wear my hair long, it's tapered and layered at the sides. I have thick red hair and get comments about it and with being a redhead I'm keeping my colour longer, which infuriates my friends who have been dying their hair for years. Wear your hair as you like, I do.

Itsnell be who you are, what makes you happy and comfortable.If your not happy with your hair, then yes change it, if you are happy then go with it.Don't waste precious time thinking what others think

I always wanted long hair as a child so started growing it when I was 12, it grew really long. When I was 40 I had it all cut off for a change, what a pain that was! It had to be blown dry to look halfway decent rather than left to dry naturally and with the options of plaits, bun etc. I let it grow and now it is quite long again and looks much better (I am 68)

Go for it. If you don't like it you can always have it cut again. If my hair was thick I would definitely grow mine.

I see Mary Beard and witches have crept into the thread, I wondered how long it would take! Mary Beard is a renowned historian and an intelligent older woman. Yet she gets so much hate thrown at her by Internet trolls because she chooses not to dye or cut her hair. Not that I think anybody in GN is a troll, if you Google it you’ll see what I mean.

I think far too many older people get their hair cut too short. If, like me, you've slightly* lost your defined jawline it can really emphasise a podgy neck. Longer hair can look so much better. But maybe as the layers are growing out, get the length trimmed now and then on the way so the layers kind-of catch up with each other. It'll be fine. Mine is a just-below-chin length bob with looks all same length but has been fairly ruthlessly chopped into for some shape.

I have quite long fine hair . It has been so since I was 13 when I got taken for a very short razor cut that made my wavy unruly hair stick out all over . I am now 68 and daughter in law trims it . I kibosh my own fringe when cut it but who really cares? My old Nursing Officer boss (still friends and she is 87 now) states that by the time I was 35 I would cut it -I was 26 at the time and my reply was no I won’t ! I do compensate for virtually no hairdresser costs by using Tegan hair claws and those velvet invisibobble scrunches . Any ideas of a good way to style a wavy fringe with widows peak? ?

I'm 64 and I wear mine long. It was down below my bra strap but I'm having it trimmed a bit more whilst the grey grows out so it's currently a little below my shoulders. As soon as that's over I shall let it shoot downwards again. If it thins I'll consider going short, but otherwise I will keep it long to my grave.

I wear it in a side swiped ponytail which I think suits me, or clamped up off my neck in very hot weather. It's straight and fine but quite thick.

Lucky you having thick wavy hair - mine is so straight can’t hold a curl to save it’s life - I don’t think there are age/hair rules anymore - go for what you want and makes you feel good, longer hair is so versatile - Google hairstyles for more ideas! It’s what you feel comfy with and like when you look in the mirror. I’m 56, got longer than shoulder length hair ... with some peak-a-boo purple bits underneath that can be seen when the wind blows ? makes me happy - contemplating a tattoo now !!!! ?

I'm 69 too and a couple of years ago I decided to grow my hair long as I fancied being an old lady (not old yet) with long grey hair down my back. It got pretty long but, much as I loved the feel of it, it didn't suit me. It's now very short and I find that difficult to manage, so am growing it out to a short bob. I would never let age dictate how I have my hair or what I wear. Go by what suits you.

I don't agree that long, grey hair is a no no. I have a friend who is nearly 70 and has long, grey hair. It is thick and shiny and she looks fabulous. I am green with envy.

I'm 63 and my white/Grey hair is almost waist length. I need to have a bun for work and my hair just kept growing but I wear it down to go out and get lots of compliments as it appears this color is 'modern' except mine is natural not dye. Wear your hair how it makes you happy. Life is too short to worry about other people's reactions but you might be surprised, as I was.

Age should be no limit as to how we wear our hair or our clothes. Whatever makes you happy. It's harmless.

I always have my hair short and choppy at the back to give me volume, but my hairdresser graduates it down towards the front so it’s almost but not quite shoulder length. I feel I have the best of both worlds with this style. My sister still has hair halfway down her back, it’s very thin and in my opinion, it does her no favours at age 66. However, she clearly likes it, so each to their own.

Go for it! Im 67. I have a shoulder length layered bob with a fringe. The longer back and side bits are very dark brown and the top/ fringe blonde. Now its quite “ trendy” to have roots showing I leave my touch-ups longer too. I love it. I feel at my age that having “modern” hair is the main way I can show I’m still interested in current trends. I cant/wouldn’t wear most of todays newest clothes trends and can no longer wear some of the fab footwear, as much as I would like to. ( Have you seen the sparkly ankle boots on QVC? And in M&S? I just had to have a pair of those ). Go for it and enjoy x

Well for a start you have lovely hair judging by your pic, I don’t think growing it to chin length is long! I class shoulder length and over long hair, you go for it, always do what you feel is right for yourself, my hair was short for years, I did like it, but since lockdown it’s grown to few inches above my shoulders and I like that style too, so I’m keeping it, I tend to dye my hair different colours all variations of browns and reds! The days of purple and pink has gone, personally don’t even think of the word mutton, it will look great itsnell, I bet you will love your new style

Grey hair any longer than chin length is no no. Witchy otherwise.

If you have a good hairdresser, they will be able to guide you.
I prefer my hair round about chin length but due to lock down and being unable to get it cut, it is now just below my shoulders.
One thing with longer hair is that you can vary the style pretty easily, so have a variety of clips etc to pin it up in different styles.
Let it grow! If you don't like it, you can always have it cut short again!

I'm now 64 and live in France. I've had my hair just below my shoulders for many years now but during lockdown it grew quite a bit and I was mostly wearing it in a plait to keep tidy and cool in the summer heat. As my grey had grown a lot too, I was tempted to have a shorter cut once my hairdresser had re-opened. I found some photos on the Gransnet site and sent them to my daughter for her opinion. She came back with 'wow Mum that's so short. Are you sure?' So I just asked for a 5cm trim but she cut off nearer 15cm when I went for my blonde colour treatment.

I find that having it a bit longer gives you more styling options and I like wearing it up in a messy twist with a clip.
