Face cream or moisturiser? What’s the difference and which one should I be using. I use a night cream but during the day which one? Thanks

I sort of though face creams was a generic term which covered all kinds of creams to put on our face. I always use moisturiser otherwise my skin feels like an old dead sheep.

EllanVannin

Polyfilla here.

I was once travelling from Aukland to the USA. I had rather a long wait at the airport so took advantage of the free, usually extremely expensive anti wrinkle cream which you could sample. I actually used it three times as it made no difference whatsoever.
Arrived San Francisco and was marched off for interrogation by immigration. Having regularly visited the U.S. without problem I was confused and nobody would tell me what the problem was.
It was an intimidating experience.
Eventually I was wheeled in for interview to explain why I had no fingerprints. It took a good five minutes before I remembered the anti wrinkle cream. A hot hand-wash with lots of scrubbing and my whorls reappeared.

You weren't far out with your Pollyfilla comment EllanVannin

Face cream doesn’t seem to sink into my skin the way it used to. I use No7 serum and that Clinique yellow moisturiser but it just seems to sit on top of my skin these days. And my skin has become really leathery even though I wear a sun block now when I go out. I’m also prone to blotches. 70 years of having good skin and I’m now like a teenager. I’ve just started using some Simple cleansing oil and Micellar (?) water that I bought ages ago and never used. Even the skin on my body is blotchy. It’s quite depressing.

My skin is always dry that is why I am using mostly cream. I use face cream and moisturizer. I have a special routine I use moisturizer in the morning and a face cream at the night. Recently, I have noticed that I have cellulite, that's why I have ordered a special anti-cellulite hot cream which you can access just by clicking this link shopmaryann.com/products/anti-cellulite-hot-cream. For some people, this price might be expensive but I'm telling you that it is worth the money!

Sorry for the thread revive, I use only hand creams as face creams I make by myself.

I’ve had a cleanse, toner and moisturise routine most my adult life. I’ve used ponds (as a teenager) , then clarins for most of the next 30 odd years. Then as pennies went down, olay. My mum always buys me clarins for Christmas. I don’t know if any if it works but my really dry skin as a teenager has turned in to normal. I do sometimes have dry skin, particularly in winter but it’s normally down to not drinking enough water.

My skin is very sensitive, so I use Simple's light moisturiser in the morning, then their richer cream at night

I think a lot of it is to do with the skin you were born with.
Not that mine is 'english rose' or 'peaches and cream'. But at 84 I have few facial wrinkles.
Is your skin stretchy or not? Did you have stretch marks and need stitches when you gave birth?
Like my Mum I don't use soap on my face, just water. If I get a dry patch I've got a cheapish Boots cream which smells nice.
I sometimes buy a tea tree oil peel off face mask which is refreshing.

That is really helpful, thank you SuzannahM.

I’m allergic to perfume, and even Simple stuff brings me out in a rash. For the last 30 years I have used “Aqueous cream” from a pharmacy instead of soap, moisturiser etc. The family’s ageing consists of a collapsed face. So be it!

Patsy70 You're very welcome.

By the way, Macadamia oil is very rich in Vitamin E - I saw you use Body Shop Stuff with Vitamin E!

And in case you're interested, I also buy oils from Holland & Barrett when they have their penny sales, makes things cheaper. They usually last a good few months as you only use a few drops at a time, so not as expensive as they seem at first.

Sorry SuzannahM, I see you’d already responded to lemsip. Thank you for the advice. smile

When I can be bothered I wear nivea moisturiser for older skin but as I don't go anywhere apart from asda I don't bother

lemsip Mon 28-Dec-20 19:42:24

thanks suzannah

SuzannahM Mon 28-Dec-20 19:09:05

@Patsy70 I use a mix of Argan, Macadamia, Sweet Almond Oil (explained a few posts back). Use the same mix on my scalp and hair before I wash my hair.

Would never use anything containing mineral oils, and baby oil is primarily if not completely mineral oil I think. Mineral oil coats your skin and hair rather than sink into it. My own choice, others may feel differently.

I’ve used Body Shop Vitamin E day & night moisturiser, cleanser & wash for years, although tried different ones in between. However, my granddaughter included an ‘erase your face’ smile microfibre cloth in my Christmas bag of gifts, and I love it. Incidentally, SuzannahM what oil do you use? Would baby oil work?

MayBee70 Mon 28-Dec-20 18:41:48

BBbevan: I started moisturising my skin in my teens when an older, more sophisticated friend advised me to. I met up with her recently and she told me she’d stopped bothering years ago. I can’t say she looked more or less wrinkled than me though. What I did find was that, because I moisturised my neck at the same time, my neck remained youthful when many of my peer group had started to go a bit saggy in that area. Gravity has now, sadly, taken over though.

SuzannahM Mon 28-Dec-20 18:41:45

@lemsip I use Argan/Sweet Almond Oil/Macadamia oil. I buy them in TKMaxx (am I allowed to say that??) - or I do when they're open! Always 100% pure - no mix of glycerins/mineral oils/etc. I have used others as well, but only pure facial oils.

I just mix up what I have - usually about 2/3 Sweet Almond Oil which is cheaper and either put them in a spray bottle or a dropper bottle. A couple of sprays on fingers, rub into skin, then a warm, damp mitt or cloth. Takes makeup off as well, even mascara, but you have to be careful not to get it in your eyes.

MayBee70 Mon 28-Dec-20 18:37:15

I’ve used No7 protect and perfect serum for years but recently started mixing it on the palm of my hand with moisturiser at night and BB facial sun protection in the daytime. I used to put it on separately before. I got about slack about uv protection in the summer and my skin got quite leathery. I think uv protection is as important as moisturising: probably more so.

Day cream/moisturiser and night cream. Brands vary as I once read that using the same one is not necessarily good as your skin gets used to it. So mostly use M&S, Superdrug and L'Oreal. All in one cleanser before bed, tissue off and then shlooshed with lukewarm water, no toners. My cleansing routine for donkeys and don't have obvious lines.
