60+ and plus sizes

Someone could make a fortune if only they asked what we wanted in clothes! I like fashionable clothes but don’t want to show my upper arms or horrible shaped knees.

We oldies have more money to spend on clothes but completely fed up of above the knee dresses (WHY?) Flowers on everything designed for the over 50S (WHY?) Short sleeved fitted tops (WHY?)

Have either of you tried eShakti? If you know what shape suits your body best, you can pick the styles you like and in some cases, the colours too.

Even better, you can add in your exact measurements. So if you are shorter, and add your height, you hopefully don't get super long clothes.

Hello Jo - I've just looked at eShakti. Thank you for the recommendation. It looks great, some lovely styles on there; elbow length sleeves, cotton and pockets too!
Have you bought anything from them?

I am 60 and I like Roman originals clothes and find them suited to our age group . The returns are particularly easy as long as you open the bag carefully there’s another sticky strips you just put the return address sticker on and take it to the post office. It’s not free but the postage just gets knocked off the refund.

Poppyred On inspection, I don't think that Roman Originals is quite our cup of tea.
There's a heck of a lot of sleeveless, over the knee, floral dresses on there!

Box2 and Kasbah have some good things but can be pricy. Lagenlook are cheaper and have some very quirky things, usually in natural fabrics. They are really plus size too, not skimpy size 20s and often flowing styles.

Thanks for this post. Too many shops have lost their way when catering for the older, cuddly ones amongst us. M&S are such a disappointment for me. Sleeveless dresses, fitted dresses and some dreadful prints and colours. I shall have a look at the suggestions. Thank you.

Last year bought elbow length sleeve t-shirts from Cotton Traders. Had quite a few colours.

I prefer elbow length sleeves and cotton fabrics instead of all this polyester. My bug bear is wide gaping neck lines on larger size tops, my head and neck are normal size its just my boobs and hips that are bigger!!

I have an hourglass figure- ok a day glass figure - and I can't cope with flowy type clothes (though topsy looked great in loose fit linen last time I saw her) but i don't like tailored stuff either. I'm a lost cause!

Just read this thread through. I’m what is called ‘normal’ but all of you are not alone in complaining about clothes for older women. I too would like to buy elbow length dresses that are not flowery with a little additional space round the armholes and not so snug to display my old and a bit saggy body. Most modern clothes seem either shapeless like sacks or badly fitting especially around the bust area. I generally find that clothes that nearly fit have the bust about 2inches too high! This is what comes of those very nasty and uncomfortable push up bras that I refuse to wear.

I’ve virtually given up shopping for clothes unless I really need something new! In fact, I loathe clothes shopping as it more often than not leads to great frustration and disappointment.

My sympathies are with all of you. You are not alone.

I would say you have to pick carefully. Last time, I loved two of the 4 dresses I ordered. The other two were OK but didn't suit me. If I had thought about it carefully, it would have been obvious they wouldn't suit me.

I would say the jersey fabric they use is nice. Very good quality. But the poplin less so. I would like to try a couple of summer dresses next. And maybe a couple of tunics.

And don’t get me started on V neck and low cut tops and dresses that show up wrinkled décolletés! ??

My pet peeve is polyester fabrics - esp for summer dresses and tops (!) I know it doesn't wrinkle but I often get hot in cotton let alone man made fibres. Disappointing to find most clothes seem to contain some polyester these days.

I sound like a brand ambassador, but I definitely am not...

The other great thing about eShakti is that you pick the basic dress (or jacket etc) and then get to amend sleeve length, neckline shape and depth and length. All of their dresses come with pockets, unless you don't want them in which case you can request them without.

Do you mean size 50, surely not, how can clothes be that big. So assume it’s age 50 plus. I like Roman, used to like Debenhams, Wallace and Principles, can’t wait to go shopping again.

I find Roman Originals too long. I’m 5ft 1in. I was looking at a couple of calf length summer dresses on one website, very nice. Read the description, the length meant they would have trailed the floor and the design meant they couldn’t be turned up. The model was 5ft 11in wearing a size 8!

Hi Poppyred, they all look massive because in lockdown the only model they have been using is a size 8, short lady called Helen. I disregard all the frilly stuff and go for the plainer, fuller things. One of my favourite tops is a style called portofino which looks enormous on Helen but great on me. I have an’ ample bosom’ and large upper arms but for my size, I still have a waist!! Lockdown was great in the summer but this winter I have put on half a stone which has to come off!!!! So all the wider sizes hides a multitude of sins!?
