Is it time to go grey?

My hair was mouse brown so had it coloured and highlighted for the last 40 years. Have been going grey since my early 50s (am 65) so now I have it coloured dark blonde to cover the grey. 3 months since lockdown I now have a lot of grey so thinking it might be time to go grey completely and stop colouring it.
Have those of you who have transitioned to grey regretted it? And does it make you feel older when you see your grey hair in the mirror?

I started going grey at 31 when DH went to the Falklands.
I've had highlights since but none since lockdown began.
I have a definite Mallen streak at the front and the rest is a nice grey shade.

Well I did it! Still some blonde in the ends but they’ll be gone very soon. I love my bob, contrary to the naysayers everyone has told me it looks lovely. Mr. B took a photo before I got a chance to mess it up grin

Mine is mainly silver, but has followed the same pattern as my mother's did, so there is still some brown at the back. The texture has remained fine but during lockdown it has grown to collar length and is now a curly mop. If I'm out in the wind, it is completely out of control.

I like the colour of my hair when it is grey but I do not like the texture, coarse and wiry. I use Loreal Stolkholm, stays white but makes my hair soft and silky.

I have a long bob and am completely grey. Let it grow out a few years ago and have never regretted it. I did have almost black hair and gradually went lighter to almost blonde and the transition was relatively painless. I get so many compliments about my hair and it makes me feel younger. Would advise against short though, go for a soft chin-length bob.

Not for me, coloured mine last week with Nice n Easy, as usual, I’m not sure how grey I am underneath. I’m a wash and towel dry lazy person.

I stopped colouring my hair a year ago and it’s coming through almost completely white from dying it dark brown. My hair and scalp are much healthier than when I was colouring it. I’m enjoying having grombre hair and won’t be having it cut short as I like my hair longer. It seems to be a real taboo to be openly grey/white but I quite like being able to still shock people at nearly 60!

My advice to anyone thinking of ditching the dye is don’t be scared of it. It’s just your natural hair colour.

Hi my mum is in her late 80s and still dyes her hair lol I’m 55 and a a lot of grey coming through. I’ve debate to let it all come through. Then my hairdresser rang me last week and asked what I wanted to book in for in few weeks time when reopening and I said I need my foils doing lol my excuse it’s my birthday day after. So I’d would say do what you want it’s your hair your body do what makes you happy after all you deserve it after the year we’ve all had.

I have used L'Oreal Age Perfect Warm Gold Toner today and I am delighted with the results.Having a warmer hair colour is definitely best for me.It is so easy to do at home, shampoo hair, put the colour on using hands wearing gloves in the pack, rinse off after 10 minutes and it's all done.It last for a few shampoos and there is enough in the pack for about 4 applications on my short hair.

If you are uncertain about grey hair making you look older, you can try it on first in the picture. There are free programs like Photodiva that allow you to change hair color in the picture, thus letting you see whether it will be good on you and playing with different shades. Ask a hairdresser, too, they usually have great eye for things like that. Maybe you'll like it in ash or platinum

I'm so pleased LOreal has worked for you Whingingmom.I'm thinking of trying the Warm Gold next. It is so easy to do and mistakes will wash out if it's not quite right for me. I think warmer shades match my skin tones best.

Geeb

This is a photo of my hair when it had its first cut after no dye left!

Geeb, your hair is stunning.

Avitor1 on your recommendation I have tried the L’Oreal Age Perfect Beige Grey toner. I am very pleased with the result, the grey/yellow has all been blended into a lovely ashy grey/blonde and it feels in much better condition. Thank you for your recommendation!

Rowsie your cut and colour are very chic and the location makes me drool with envy, roll end of lockdown.

I’m blonde and have been colouring my grey regrowth with a Josh Wood touch up applicator. I don’t think I’ll suit going grey tbh. My personality is so blonde I can’t imagine being any other colour

Happilyretired123, I think it just depends on the tone of grey and whether you like it.

It made sense, for me, to stop dyeing the grey blonde - and dye the remaining blonde grey instead.

It's mostly silver anyway, so I've used 'Metallic silver' which has a purple hint to it.

Thistlelass Wed 17-Mar-21 23:52:18

Well I don't intend to stop having mine professionally coloured. If I were to go to a grey 'colour' though, I would still have my hairdresser make it a sleek silver mane.?

I am 63 and chose to let my hair go grey. It’s very fuzzy and grows upwards and I need to blow dry or use straighteners if I want to avoid the Einstein look. The heat has made the ends go yellow and despite trying every purple or blue “anti brassiness “ shampoo on the market it still looks awful. It accentuates discolouration on my skin. I feel and look worn out and tired. I can’t wait for hairdressers to open for a smart short cut and advice about a colour.

Geeb Tue 16-Mar-21 10:00:41

I agree twinnytwin, whatever helps and whatever makes you feel good is the way to go!

Geeb Tue 16-Mar-21 09:58:01

Thank you Yorki, as I said, it does help if you use a good silver shampoo. I would recommend Matrix total results in oh so silver.

Geeb Tue 16-Mar-21 09:54:12

The colour you’re wearing is exactly what I mean about having bright sharp colours next to the face. It suits you beautifully Rowsie smile

Dinahmo.. I'm with you on the long grey look. It can look revolting if it's long and stalky looking, it gives off a really dry witchypoo look, it can make a person look quite evil and scruffy on the wrong head. Just because people like it, it doesn't mean it looks good on them. I think texture, shade and style has a lot to do with it... "Geeb" Is a perfect example of what grey hair should look like if your going to leave it as it is. Otherwise your going to look like a witch.

My natural hair colour is mouse. For many years pre lockdown I had short hair, dyed blonde from a box (thanks DH). During lockdown I had to let it grow obviously and was surprised to find it had a slight curl. I was determined to let the grey grow out but after a year I decided it didn't suit my complexion - it was a steel grey in parts, still brown in others. I was hoping for a gorgeous colour like DH or Geeb. I had a box of hair colour hiding in the back of a cupboard so have put blond streaks back in and feel I look much better. My hair is now almost to my shoulders and DH loves it. I'll have a trim asap to tidy it up but will continue to pop blonde into it.

Yorki Tue 16-Mar-21 08:56:51

Geeb.. I like you hair colour. It's not that harsh salt n peppery grey its a soft grey I like it.
