married DD , not DH!
I’m a Pear/Apple - Part 5. Still going!!
Being asked for an honest opinion
At the end of a Zoom meeting yesterday the participants were discussing what they would do first when the lockdown ends. Other than seeing family and going to the hairdresser, many said that they would be having facials, body massages, pedicures and other beauty treatments. Am I alone in NEVER having had any of these things?
Just being brutally honest, I don’t think that those who said they needed facials would be likely to benefit from them.
Am I unusual in thinking that all these ‘beauty’ treatments are a self indulgent waste of money.
married DD , not DH!
A summer leg wax. That’s all I have done.
And then only because it lasts so much longer than shaving.
Hardly indulgent though.
.
me . i have never had a facial/nails/. whats the point ..... i wash with bath E45 cream always have done .yes i will get my haircut as it looks like a birds nest ...
I used to get my nails done which was at A very stressful time in my life when I was running around after ageing parents. It was my time and I loved it. Don’t think I’ll bother now but I can see how it helps women relax and have some time for themselves.
I have never had a beauty treatment though I have thought of having a pedicure but I have not had the courage. As I am chronically ill though I do sometimes have reflexology which I am not sure makes a lot of difference to my health but is a very nice thing to have. Also, I used to have healing which again I do not think makes a lot of difference to my health but it is a blessing to have a kind touch. Especially as it was offered without payment as a gift by the healers though I do believe the worker is worthy of her hire. Perhaps it is for these sort of reasons that women other than me have beauty treatments.
Love a facial it's so relaxing, same with a pedicure and manicure. Had a couple of massages over the years but wasnt keen on them. Nothing beats a bit of pampering.
Each spring except last year I have my eyelashes tinted as they are fair at the ends and as I suffer from hay fever I don’t like to use mascara. Works well for me I usually have a pedicure before wearing sandals as I have arthritis and find painting my toenails difficult, although I only have it done once then struggle for the rest of summer.
I have massaged and given pedicures and manicures to terminal cancer patients, to ease their pain and make them feel better. A self indulgent waste of money. I think not!!!!
I have never had any beauty treatments either and I would hate to have a massage!
I treat myself to tickets for the theatre and concerts which others would consider indulgent so, as others have said, if you can afford it treat yourself to anything that makes you happy!
I have had to let my hair grow out grey/white due to a red sore scalp. I now have a pedicure every six weeks (when allowed) and enjoy the massage treatment and choosing the nail polish this really lifts my spirits and I am really looking forward to showing off my toes this summer. I use some of the money I have saved from not paying for a salon colour for this and have already purchased two new pairs of sandles too. I don't like body/back massages but a pedicure really does make me feel good.
I for one cannot wait for a massage! I get extremely knotted with stress
Personally I have never had a massage and to be honest its something that's never appeared to me, you are not unusual, each to their own...
Unless you grow all your own food, make all your own clothes, only drink tap water, never go on holiday, you can't claim never to be self indulgent. Whats wrong with a bit of self indulgence now and again?
I have pedicures a couple of times during the Summer, so my feet look more attractive when wearing sandals. I have had facials and massages occasionally and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. My hair appointment is booked for 22 April and I will then book a pedicure, Reflexology and a neck massage. That will set me up for the rest of the year! Self indulgence? Maybe, but I see it as therapeutic.
Massage is sooooo good for you, good for mind body and soul. If you’ve never tried one you really should treat yourself.
Whatever floats your boat but I’m with the ‘hate being mauled about’ brigade’.
I agree that it is totally unnecessary and a terrible waste of money but I still go for treatments now and then!
I never used to bother (even with the hairdresser) but as I have aged I realise it isn't about vanity or wanting to look younger it is about self-care
My joints ache so a body massage now and then keeps me more mobile. I have difficulty getting a good nights sleep so find a facial or Indian head massage very relaxing
I can't see well enough to do a manicure and can't bend down to see to my feet so a pedicure is welcome!
I too use a local college course for discounted treatments and the girls are lovely. Letting them 'practice' on us gives them the confidence they will need to earn their own living in the future
I don't see it as self indulgence, more a maintenance schedule!
You are not alone but I think they are just making conversation. You must do something? Garden, visit family? People spend their money their way. I believe it's just conversation.
As I age I find I am spending more time and money on myself. My daughters are grown up and will treat me to nice things, just as I did for them when they were young. Younger one took me to Barcelona for five days, lovely hotel with a spa and she'd booked massages and pedicures for both of us. During lockdown, I've actually spent more money on make up and skincare just because it makes me feel good. If that is self indulgent, then so be it I honestly don't care!
Wth the way Boris keeps putting us into lockdown, I now think twice about spending any money.
I would like to just sit in a pub garden with my family and have a pint and hug each other
I only have my hair and eyebrows done normally as well fwiw
I have enjoyed a massage on the few occasions that I've had one - gifts - , and have said that if I was ' rich ', I would have a live- in masseur. In real life, even though I like it, I find it hard to treat myself without guilt. When I spend money, I always feel that it should be on something useful or long lasting. It makes me sad, but I can't help it.
My daughters enjoy a full body aromatherapy massage because they both have stressful jobs, I enjoy acupuncture&reflexology to benefit my health and manicures/pedicures when I have some spare cash as a treat to help lift my spirits. My eldest daughter enjoys deep cleansing facials to help with her stress related acne when she can afford them. My son in laws enjoy the occasional massage of back neck and shoulders to relieve aches and pains. My elderly mother would absolutely refuse to attend any therapy that may make her feel more relaxed or improved her health because she is not fond of people touching her. She would certainly refuse a manicure or pedicure too because she has never “wasted” money on frivolous things like that. I have lovely natural nails and enjoy getting them painted by a beautician, my mother considers it wasteful. I’ve known of single parents on benefits with young children who prioritised nail extensions over paying their credit card Bill. I am not addicted to treatments like some I know, but like to be pampered once in a while. I haven’t been going crazy missing the salon through lockdown, but I do know of women who have.
Every one of my friends enjoy spa days, Botox, manicures, the lot. I have never have had any of them, my treat is the hairdresser and only when needed and boy do I need it. I'm happy doing my own nails, using face masks, etc and then my treat to myself is to buy nice clothes and have outings with the girls.
I’ve never fancied having someone else give me a facial, don’t like having my feet touched and see going to the hairdresser as just something that has to be done. And I can do my own nails as well as anyone else without trailing into town. But I do really love a spa day, and a relaxing massage when I’m on holiday. Even the one I had while lying on wooden slats staring down onto live coals, and the one where someone walked up and down my spine. I can see that’s not for everyone though.
