Do you care? Too much ? Too little ?

I know this is controversial but I’m always surprised when people say they don’t care what they look like. I’m not obsessive by any means but I do care what I wear - not for others, just for myself.

I’m rather all or nothing, at home and no visitors just a kaftan at the moment and a slick of red lipstick, but going out, especially in the evening, I like the full works and find it therapeutic. I love anything to do with fashion.
Now more meetings are happening, I’m enjoying dressing up again. I’d practically forgotten my usual routine.
I would say someone like the Queen and Princess Anne in a way don’t care what they look like, the clothes are a uniform and they are not interested in fashion, they just want to look correct, as opposed to say Princess Diana.
We are all different.

I dont care obsessively, two showers a day, moisturiser, lipstick and ironed clothes that l feel I look good in. After that I dont give it a thought.
I dont like it when people say they dont care what they look like, I know someone who said this and I am afraid he did smell. He admitted he was lazy, but unfortunately this had an affect on other people as it was not pleasant.

I wish I didn't care but I do. I always want to look nice even if I'm not going anywhere. Recently my itchy eyes have been so bad I haven't been able to wear any make up which I hate. How can I have become allergic to eye make when I've been wearing it since I was about 14?

Yes I do care, but not fanatical. I don't go out without some makeup on (eyes and lips and a bit of blusher). Wouldn't dream of going out in a tracksuit or jogging bottoms (unless I was doing some kind of sport!). Wear perfume every day, even if I am not leaving the house. I think working in an office all my working life has something to do with liking smart clothes; I don't really do leggings I prefer jeans, which is about as casual as I get.

Ealdemodor Wed 25-Aug-21 16:39:29

It does matter to me how I look, and affects my mood.
Actually, I’m so vain I probably think this song is about me.

TillyTrotter Wed 25-Aug-21 16:39:35

I do care, because I look in the mirror every day when dressed to check I’m neat and tidy - but I probably don’t look in one again for the rest of the day.
I can brush my straight hair without the need for a mirror.

I care, I care about clothes, but not fashion, I hope people don’t think I look awful, but I dress for myself, not for them.
Some of my clothes I’ve had a very long time, but that’s fine.
Hair, coloured monthly, minimum makeup, and very little jewellery, lots of scarves, I love scarves.
I don’t think I’ll ever lose interest in how I look.

What I do wish though is that I’d appreciated that I did look good when I was younger as I was always so critical of myself.

Same here Maybee

I don't care. I make an effort to put make up on daily and cover the grey roots that frame my face for my 'on-camera' lessons.

Other that that, I genuinely DGAF. I don't care what others think.

I care about my appearance, but I don’t care what others think of it. I’m restricted in some ways as I can only walk in certain types of shoes and anything tight around the neck irritates s scar and damaged nerves. I don’t like anything with fussy, inaccessible fastenings. Fortunately long dresses with trainers are a look this year. smile

MerylStreep Wed 25-Aug-21 17:32:22

I do care very much how I look. Even at home clothes have to be co- ordinated. My hair is trimmed about every 6 weeks. I have my nails done every 3 weeks. Although you wouldn’t think so if you saw me doing my gardening jobs or diy.
And I do care what other people think of how I look.

Edith81 Wed 25-Aug-21 17:50:20

I’ve always dressed more classically rather than trendy and like to be presentable for any occasion or unexpected visitors and I certainly do care how I look.

CanadianGran Wed 25-Aug-21 18:02:01

I do care. I try to follow styles, but only what I know already suits me and is age appropriate. Grooming tidy but not excessive (no gel nails, etc.) and wear some makeup daily. Smart, but not glamorous.

My older sister doesn't care, and I wish she would. She has let her teeth go, long fuzzy hair and basically has enough clothing so one set is being worn while the other is in the laundry. One pair of trainers until they wear out. She is definitely on the frumpy scale, but thinks it is a colossal waste of time and money to be otherwise.

That’s awful. Years ago a doctor told me that I could never wear eye make up again and I was so upset. It turned out to be a bad case of computer eye (remember when some screens tended to dry your eyes out). And dry eye drops helped, too. I bought plain glasses so I could hide my naked eyes behind them. He had no idea how much pain he had caused me and it wasn’t the first time his advice was wrong either.

thanks for the replies everyone ! Glad it’s not just me who cares, not to be hyper fashionable or expensively dressed but just to look “nice”. I love bright blues and pinks but also navy and pale grey and my reading glasses tend to match my outfits !!
Hardly ever wear black near my face now. I never wear anything too fitted,( apart from trousers I mean) and

BigBertha1 Thu 26-Aug-21 07:11:53

Yes I do care but of course I don't look as good or as sleep m as I used to. I do like buying clothes s and make up but have little need for very smart things now.

BigBertha1 Thu 26-Aug-21 07:12:42

Slim...bloody predictive text!

NanKate Thu 26-Aug-21 07:30:33

I enjoy putting on my make-up and colour co-ordinating. I have lots of costume jewellery, mostly bought in charity shops. I don’t care anymore what others think about my dress sense. I like dressing up.

My friend says she doesn’t care about clothes and never wears make-up, but we still rub along nicely.

henetha Thu 26-Aug-21 10:44:12

I'm a long way from being smart or trendy, but I do like to look reasonably ok. Even if I'm not going out I always wear a little make up and some jewellery.

Beanie654321 Thu 26-Aug-21 10:56:42

Does it really matter to any one else what you wear. I wear for comfort, at present a cross between Wheres Wally, red and stripped t shirt and Jolly Green Giant, green crop trousers, I'm short and have lost alot of weight so they are hanging. People forget we are all individuals. Why worry?

Moggycuddler Thu 26-Aug-21 11:03:52

Depends what they mean. I don't care much about being fashionable or wearing make up etc, or whether other people think I look attractive or not. I wear mismatched clothes sometimes and daft t shirts and casual comfy clothes. I do care a lot about my personal hygiene and being clean, and wearing clean clothes.

Larsonsmum Thu 26-Aug-21 11:09:06

I REALLY care what I look like, and with 83 diagnosed illnesses/conditions it is a huge part of what keeps me going. Always have make-up on, hair styled, nails done and love my wardrobe and getting dressed. I am certainly not ashamed to say this is SO important to me.

greenlady102 Thu 26-Aug-21 11:09:24

I don't care what other people think I look like....I do care what I think I look like.

Hetty58 Thu 26-Aug-21 11:10:37

It all depends upon what I'm doing. I'm much more interested in the doing than the looks. Today I'm in an old jogsuit as dog walking and gardening are on the agenda. My hair's tied back and I look a state. Today I don't care.

If I'm seeing family or friends, I scrub up quite well, wear something presentable (but still comfy) do my hair and slap on some lippy. Still, It's five minutes, job done, so still I don't care much.

I assume they're much more interested in conversation, plans and activities - rather than looks, as I am.

I'm surprised people care so much about appearance, really. Take a look at the Charlie Dimmock argument. Can we criticise the media if we are image obsessed ourselves?

Humbertbear Thu 26-Aug-21 11:23:12

Definitely care. Even if I’m having a day doing nothing at home I will be coordinated and wear jewellery. My mother is nearly 101 and she is always well turned out with a necklace. Why wouldn’t you care how you look?
