Do you care? Too much ? Too little ?

I know this is controversial but I’m always surprised when people say they don’t care what they look like. I’m not obsessive by any means but I do care what I wear - not for others, just for myself.

Yes I care - I'm not obsessive, once I'm dressed that's it for the day and I don't give my clothes another thought. I'll never be mistaken for a fashion model but I do like to look as nice as I can most of the time.

I'm also surprised when people say they don't care what they look like. But I suspect what they mean is that clothes and fashion don't interest them much and they're happy to just be tidy and comfy. Or maybe there really are a few bag ladies on GN. Each to their own.

I am currently wearing giant rabbit slippers so I think I probably dont care.

Galaxy

I am currently wearing giant rabbit slippers so I think I probably dont care.

Depends why you are wearing them - if you are wearing them because you love giant rabbit slippers then you probably do care.

If you are wearing them because they are the only ones you have and can't be bothered to get some more then you probably don't care ?

I love them. The real rabbit views them with suspicion though.

i care and i am interested
but the older i get the more i just want to look smart and halfway to elegant
i wish

I do care in that I take time when I dress each morning to choose things that match, feel comfortable, are flattering and appropriate to what I will be doing.
I don't care in that (a) I don't choose the latest fashions when buying new clothes and (b) I don't pay attention to what other people think of my choices
My husband says that my motto is be "never knowingly underdressed".

I do care, although I am currently wearing comfy scruffs as WFH, but wouldn't go out in them. In zoom meetings I put on make up and a smart top. No one can see my trackies and slippers.

I do care up to a point though the pandemic has resulted in me not bothering too much about how I dress or what I look like. Given that I need to have a passport photo taken I have started trying different face creams and I need to reappraise how I put my make up on. What I did 18 months ago doesn’t seem to work now. What I do wish though is that I’d appreciated that I did look good when I was younger as I was always so critical of myself.

Yes, I care about my appearance, might only run to being clean and tidy, I will certainly never be any sort of 'style icon'
Today I have swapped the cardi that I wore to go out this morning for a fairly awful old long cardigan which is so comfortable!

Lucca Wed 25-Aug-21 14:26:42

Galaxy you wouldn’t go out in your tavbit slippers though would you ?

Kate1949 Wed 25-Aug-21 14:34:16

I care. Nature hasn't been kind the last few years but I keep battling on!

Mollygo Wed 25-Aug-21 14:37:46

I do care. I like to be colour coordinated, even with casual clothes (almost anything looks good with jeans) and white shirts or T-shirts look good with most colours.

Esspee Wed 25-Aug-21 15:17:14

I look very scruffy when gardening or sailing but otherwise I try to look smart. I never wear make up (maybe lipstick on a rare occasion) or paint my nails but thankfully I have nice hair and great looking feet.?
During lockdown I went through my wardrobe wearing and washing everything in turn. It meant that on the odd occasion the doorbell rang I opened the door in anything from shorts to evening dress. The postman had a good laugh.

FannyCornforth Wed 25-Aug-21 15:22:26

I definitely care.
But about specific things.
For instance, I’m overweight, but that doesn’t particularly bother me as there’s not a great deal that I can do about it.
But I do care about my hair, face, hands, accessories, jewellery.
All the things that I’ve got some control over.
I’m also a firm believer in making the most of what you’ve got.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 25-Aug-21 15:50:56

I’m with you Fanny, apart from the jewellery which other than earrings and wedding ring I rarely wear (all in the Bank dontcha know!).

aonk Wed 25-Aug-21 15:56:41

I agree with Fanny too. We all have problems with how we look especially as we grow older. I try to look my best given the limitations of my figure and my age. I like to wear make up and a little jewellery and flattering colours. If you sort out your nails, hair, make up and teeth you can make the best of yourself and keep up your morale.

I’ve just been to the corner shop with my greasy hair , in my old leggings and a dab of lipstick. I always find, lipstick gives me a boost…..

Sago Wed 25-Aug-21 16:10:38

If I am scruffy I feel despondent, I need to look good to feel good.

JaneJudge Wed 25-Aug-21 16:15:58

I think because of lockdown and self isolation etc I have made less of an effort but I had to go out today and see other people and I put on a new dress and make up shock and my husband asked me if I had a boyfriend grin (as a joke obviously)
I have stopped dyeing my hair though and I am not as grey as I thought I was so I don't really know what to do now....carry on getting highlights? home dye? leave natural?

Jaxjacky Wed 25-Aug-21 16:17:00

I care enough that I’m clean and tidy, I’m fortunate with easy hair, I wear a gold chain, wedding, eternity, keeper rings and a watch. If I started to wear more jewellery, make up, matching accessories or other ‘extras’ both MrJ, friends and family would be bewildered, I’ve never done so and won’t start now.

luluaugust Wed 25-Aug-21 16:17:02

I do care and like to be colour co ordinated. After catching a sight of myself in a shop mirror yesterday I am off for a cut and blow dry tomorrow. I had been thinking my longer hair looked really good but now I know it doesn't. Must get back to wearing my necklaces.

Aldom Wed 25-Aug-21 16:17:45

I was once sitting in the waiting area at the hairdresser. I was quietly admiring the woman seated next to me. Her clothes were obviously expensive, she was elegant, just so beautifully turned out. As I was thinking this, she turned to me and said, 'I feel such a mess. I only wear these old clothes to come to the hairdresser.' I was speechless.

Baggs Wed 25-Aug-21 16:17:48

Scruffy can look good..

Baggs Wed 25-Aug-21 16:20:11

By which I mean one doesn't have to look smart to look good. Having your own style regardless of trendiness and passing fashions is something to aim for I've always thought.
