Teddy Coat - should I get one?

I'm tempted to buy a teddy coat but I'm in my 70s and don't want to look like the proverbial mutton dressed as lamb. I am not fat (but not thin) and try to be fairly up to date clothes-wise but would a teddy coat be a step too far? I'm fed up with my Uniqlo padded coat and jackets and would really like something different and more colourful. What do others think? Has anyone got one?

Go for it! I’m 71 and bought. Cream one on Friday.. love it and have had many compliments..

Yes, definitely . Why not . What has fashion to do with age ? If you try it on and feel and look good in it buy it.

It’s clearly far from a new fashion!! (From Guardian / 2014!)

Age aside, not many people can carry off wearing a teddy coat without looking like the Michelin man. You need to try some on and be honest with yourself as to wether this look will flatter you. I think the trend will be short lived and all these coats will end in land fill. Much better to go for a good quality stylish classic which really suits you. You can dress it up with a lovely cashmere or silk scarf. Far more classy and sophisticated.

They're fine for any age. I'm 70, I wouldn't think twice, they look very cosy. Unfortunately I have already too many coats.

I quite fancied one of these, so I tried my daughters one on.

I am fairly slim and it made me look huge and bulky.
Not at all flattering, I’m sorry to say.

Heavens, I just looked. It's just what I had thought. I'm a size 12 but curvy. I would look enormous! So that's a No then.

I'm 68 and bought one from Fat Face a couple of years ago (teddy bear brown in colour). It's so cosy and I love it. So pleased you have decided to order one - you're never too old to wear something you want to wear!

Would my bum look big in this?

Each to their own, of course, but actually classy and sophisticated is not, and never has been, a look I aspire to smile

Yes go for it, your not too old if you feel comfortable in it, don’t worry about anybody else xxxx

I have no idea what a teddy coat is. Must Google it tomorrow...

I think if you are tall it might be okay. I'm 5ft and would look like a large dog. People would pat my head if I wore one.

Possibly.?

I have a burgundy teddy jacket bought in M&S about 12 years ago, so they aren’t a new thing.

How very rude.

(But my bum looks big in everything these days)

You are all making me laugh! I wonder if I will look like a 'large dog' or a 'walking sausage roll' or the 'Michelin man'. I don't really go for 'classy and sophisticated' or even 'elegant', so I shan't worry about that. I have asked my sister if she thinks it will make me look fat(ter) and she says probably but get it anyway. She always gives me good advice. Oh, dear. Who would have thought that asking about teddy coats would get me such hilarious answers. Thanks, all!

lemongrove Sat 06-Nov-21 22:43:58

Not to worry....big bums are all the rage! I had my own enhanced recently ( due to lockdown Cornish pasties.)

I blame DH who keeps buying packets of Magnums.
Magnum describes my backside now, twice the size it was.

My grandmother had a dark brown teddy coat in the early 1950s!

Lexisgranny

My grandmother had a dark brown teddy coat in the early 1950s!

I think my mum had one, too, Lexis, only she called it beaver lamb and used to joke that when she wore her beaver lamb and my dad wore his all-wool overcoat with extra padded shoulders, there was no room for them to sit together on the bus. My mum later turned her beaver lamb coat into a beaver lamb rug and put it in front of the fire. Waste not, want not!

NotTooOld Sat 06-Nov-21 23:04:23

Incidentally, what sort of an animal is a beaver lamb? Anyone know? I expect it's banned now, as a coat that is. Maybe there are herds of beaver lambs roaming about freely in somewhere like Mongolia.

Josianne Sun 07-Nov-21 07:57:51

I've stroked real beaver fur. It is very coarse and straight, almost prickly. Nothing like a lamb!?

Gwyneth Sun 07-Nov-21 09:36:00

I tried one on in Marks and Spencer yesterday. Lovely coat but because I’m only just over 5ft it wasn’t flattering. Just wish I was taller.
