Cashmere Jumper

I've never had a cashmere jumper and, having received some vouchers for my birthday, decided to treat myself to an M&S roll-neck cashmere jumper. However, reading some of the reviews, they say that the quality this year is really poor. Has anyone bought one? What do you think? I really don't know where else to buy one from. Uniqlo sell them but I've never shopped there.

Have you looked at Woolovers?

I think there are many grades of cashmere. You can tell by the price usually.

Cashmere does definitely vary in quality, and like everything else you largely get what you pay for, but if you go for broke and get the best quality you can afford you will have a sweater for life - provided you look after it and wash it properly…

Whitewavemark2 The M&S are around £89 which is the most money I've ever spent on a jumper. Maybe I should save up and buy a more expensive one.

Sorry to put a damper on it but I have had problems with everything I bought from Woolovers despite carefully following their washing instructions.

Woolovers gets dodgy reviews and the quality has dropped .

Brora is amazing, but it comes at a price.

Elegran Sat 20-Nov-21 13:04:45

I haven't bought from them for a while - mine has lasted well.

Have you looked at the M&S sweaters?

The denser the stitch the better the quality and it should be soft but not too soft as it softens over time.

Other than that and if you want to have an idea you could look on line to say Peter Hahn - they have some eye wateringly expensive stuff, but also the sale is worth a look.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 20-Nov-21 13:09:38

The other thing I would say is that I have never paid full price I always buy from the sales.

I can’t vouch for the quality, but I was looking on the Landsend site this morning, and they have a deal on at the moment for roll neck cashmere sweaters at £59. They have good reviews, but does anybody have first hand experience of what their cashmere is like?

I buy recycled cashmere -jumpers, throws and ponchos from Turtle Doves a lovely friendly company based in Shrewsbury. Ticks a few boxes for me!

I bought some last winter, Elegran and the quality has gone down, all made in China now too. I thought they would be British made.

Lands End are generally good quality but I notice that some of their jumpers are now made in China too. I ordered some cotton ones and they were so thick and heavy they were uncomfortable so I sent them back.

Is it that I'm fussy?

Lands End corduroy trousers:
Two pairs of regular length are just about long enough, the third pair are about 6" too long grin

I used to wear my great grandmothers beautiful black cashmere jumper. It was at least 60 years old and looked like new. It was washed with the greatest care. Must have been very expensive when bought in the 1930s.
It was still going strong last time I saw it. DD bagged it!

Sago Sat 20-Nov-21 13:18:21

StephLP I buy 1 Cashmere jumper a year and rotate the wear so I usually have 6/7 on the go! A good one will give you years of wear if looked after!

Uniqlo are excellent and John Lewis tend to be fairly good.
I have never found M&S to be that good.

Some of my best have been from TKMaxx.

Always use a cashmere comb and only hand wash.
I use Eucalan anti moth lavender wash, it’s a no rinse hand wash that leaves your woollens feeling and smelling wonderful, no fabric conditioner necessary.

Urmstongran Sat 20-Nov-21 13:18:34

I’m off to Google ‘Turtle Doves’ Maw!
Bad enough you got me into ‘Safari’ a couple of years ago.
Good job I don’t buy many clothes. ...

Aveline Sat 20-Nov-21 13:21:14

Eucalan. Sounds an excellent product. Off to Google it. Thanks.

I use a wool and silk wash and put it through the wool cycle in the washing machine. I reckon the oldest I’ve got is at least 25 years old and the youngest purchased in last years winter sale. All come out like new.

Never ever use fabric conditioner on wool???

DillytheGardener Sat 20-Nov-21 13:33:12

Agree the M&S ones are no good this year ( I sent mine back), woollovers I’ve bought in previous years have been fairly mixed in quality - tending towards poor, I now buy Pringles at outlet sales or Brora second hand. They last and never seem to pill, lose shape or softness. (Cashmere addict ??‍♀️)

Grandmajean Sat 20-Nov-21 13:37:37

I buy from Pure. Huge selection of styles and colours. You can machine wash them but they do shrink a bit. I have a cashmere comb for pilling

DillytheGardener Sat 20-Nov-21 13:39:36

That emoji was blonde on my screen then went brunette after I posted - does my iPhone know I’m not a true blonde ?

Aldom Sat 20-Nov-21 13:39:42

Pure Collection top quality, but expensive. At the moment there is 20% off. They wash perfectly even when machine washed.
I will investigate Turtle Doves as I lived in Shrewsbury for many years.

MaizieD Sat 20-Nov-21 13:44:05

I used to buy M&s cashmere, good quality, machine washed beautifully, but then the quality and availability of the styles and colours I liked went down hill. I then bought from Woolovers, lovely quality, equally machine washable, but I haven't bought from either supplier for a couple of years and Woolover's range has got smaller.

I was wondering where else to look... so glad of everyone's suggestions. I don't think cashmere can be beaten for shear warmth and durability.
