At last wider leg jeans, lets be honest, how many older women look good in tight or narrow leg jeans.. Even some younger women would do themselves a favour and not show of the huge hips' and unshapely legs. We cant all look like models. I have walked behind bandy legs, bowie legs, spindle legs and fat legs. Not a pretty sight. How much more feminine we will all look in the wider leg jeans. The problem is where do you purchase them, they are promoted but in which store.???

I admit to sometimes thinking, "OMG!" at the sight of someone's outfit. I don't believe anyone who says they have never done that

Thanks greengran. There are some real saintly types on GN!

While I might think “ oh dear me no”. It does not mean those people, don’t have the right to wear whatever they like! It is just my opinion! And it doesn’t mean I think I am perfect….I don’t like my legs at all but I hope I dress appropriately…

Agree with Polnan. What an over the top and quite bullying reaction to the OP. I guess none of you ever think anything bad. It's not like she has said these comments to the women in question. Calm down and stop being so holier than thou.

I’m now at age where don’t really care what others think, I wear skinny ones as they’re stretchy and comfy, wore boot cut when they were in, always wear loose tops over as I’m ‘cuddly’ (20!), my kids always roll their eyes when I say I’m fat - I am, but don’t care! Bringing up a beautiful daughter I made every effort to only compliment and never be judgmental to her and she’s a confident woman now with a shapely gorgeous figure.

Finally I remember in 80s actually sewing myself into jeans at the bottom to get them as tight as possible!

Bernthefern Sun 02-Jan-22 11:26:23

I love skinny jeans and wear them all the time. Not a fan of wide leg jeans. Regardless of age, just wear what suits you and/or that you feel comfortable in. As long as I can look in the mirror and feel reasonably content, I don’t care what anyone else thinks. That’s one of the great things about getting older.

Theoddbird Sun 02-Jan-22 11:24:45

I don't do jeans...simple.

GreenGran78 Sun 02-Jan-22 11:24:37

Lucca I totally agree with you. Lillian probably didn't think it through, when she posted what was, maybe, just an off-the-cuff comment. She should have known that her remarks would be jumped on by the PC police (as mine probably will be) I admit to sometimes thinking, "OMG!" at the sight of someone's outfit. I don't believe anyone who says they have never done that. On the other hand I wear what I like. Almost always jeans or trousers, and at 82, size 16 and 5ft tall I'm sure that people judge me too. I don't care, as long as I'm warm/cool enough, and comfortable. Wide jeans are definitely out, for me. I would look ridiculous, and probably catch my foot in the flappy things. I also like bootcut, but the shops seem to stock mainly skinny jeans, which I would find uncomfortable.
I see lots of wide leg pairs in the Charity shops though. Way to go, Lillian, and remember that freedom of speech is still (just about) allowed in this country.

Complaining about complaining is still complaining.

Hetty58 Sun 02-Jan-22 11:13:40

Lillian40, I totally agree about the funny legs - in leggings too. Still, I don't think any jeans are flattering on the over 60's - unless worn with a long top.

Why display a flat or drooping bottom to the world? Don't people check in a triple mirror - or just get someone to take a photo of a back and side view? I only know one older person, a PT, who has a decent figure still.

Tanjamaltija Sun 02-Jan-22 11:12:26

My legs are not for anyone to comment about.

Copes283 Sun 02-Jan-22 11:10:32

A friend who, in her younger days, was complaining to her father about the shape of her legs received his reply thus "well they hold you up don't they?" ! I often think of this comment which I find amusing, but somehow very sensible too. On the subject of jeans, I like straight leg as they seem to hide the imperfections in my own legs (no, I'm not telling!). It's leggings that I think do nobody any favours, so I don't wear them ie practising what I preach!!!! The sun is out here, hope it is in your neck of the woods. A good day to take my jeans for a walk!!!!!

Lilian40…you must be so beautiful with a perfect body shape and gorgeous legs.

Cid24 Sun 02-Jan-22 11:05:03

My mother was just the same!

Juicylucy Sun 02-Jan-22 11:02:03

Could you not just off asked where to buy wide leg jeans from. I don’t feel there was any need for the other comments.

4allweknow Sun 02-Jan-22 11:01:56

Straight leg or some slim leg for me. Never skinny. Wonder why I choose those. Oh yes I'm not very tall or slim and wide legged trousers would give me a boxed like appearance. Suppose I am like OP I consider what I look like and choose styles accordingly rather than wear whatever is the style of the day.

Fashionista1 Sun 02-Jan-22 11:00:51

The M&S 'Magic' jeans are a straight leg and very nice. They sit on your waist (no muffin top) they have stretch and are very comfy but they are quite wide. Personally I like slim cut jeans (not skinny) but they are not readily available in 'on the waist' stretch style. I have worn skinny but usually only with a longer top covering the hip area and a lowish heeled boot. I wouldn't judge others on their choices as I think we should all be free to wear what we like and not be a slave to covering up our bodies.

knspol Sun 02-Jan-22 10:54:38

Very well said Scotsmum!

polnan Sun 02-Jan-22 10:53:32

I`ll stick up for Lilian 40,, yes, I hear what you all say, about being kind etc. etc.. but come on, are you all being kind to Lilian40? just wondering

icanhandthemback Sun 02-Jan-22 10:52:57

Well said, Scotsmum. I'm not sure why anybody should think they have the right to judge others in what they wear and the damage that can be done when commenting on the body shape of someone can last a life time. My mother called my fat continually and I have felt that all my life. I apparently have no waist which means I look like a man and I could look as good as a cousin if I just lost weight. She wonders why I have no confidence in myself but even when I lose weight, that is wrong too because then I am being silly. Of course I don't need to lose any more.

Diane7 Sun 02-Jan-22 10:48:03

I love my jeans. Flared and straight, mainly from Tesco and I will be 66 in 2 months.

Larsonsmum Sun 02-Jan-22 10:45:20

Each to their own please. I dislike wide leg trousers, and as a 7 1/2 stone Size 6 64 year old am very happy to wear leggings, jeggings and skinny jeans. Let people of all shapes, sizes and ages wear what they want please.

Janeea Sun 02-Jan-22 10:41:42

I have just bought a pair in next

LindaPat Fri 31-Dec-21 12:37:59

I tend to favour straight leg jeans in a soft denim or needlecord. I also have thick black leggings to wear with boots, under longer length tunics/jumper dresses. I don't feel comfy in skin tight garments.

I have struggled with my weight all my life, and spent most of my teens and early adulthood hiding under clothes which hid or at least disguised my figure. Only now in my mid 60s ( and having lost a lot of weight), am I more confident in my appearance, and am at the stage when I think I don't care what anyone else thinks anyway!

I look at today's young women and silently applaud them for having the confidence to wear whatever they want, regardless of their shape or size. I don't judge, but sometimes think " oh I would have loved to wear that".

Take care xx

SueDonim Fri 31-Dec-21 12:33:20

No thanks to wide leg trousers/jeans. I’ve managed to trip myself up by standing on the loose fabric of one leg while using the stairs! ? ?

For myself, I like straight or slim fit jeans. Other people make different choices for themselves. I can’t see any problem with that.

Lucca Fri 31-Dec-21 12:20:08

MrsJeeves

You're being a bit hard on Lillian40! When I read the OP the poem of Ogden Nash, which was in a book given to me 50+ years ago, came to mind:
"Sure, deck your lower limbs in pants
Yours are the limbs, my sweeting.
You look divine as you advance
Have you seen yourself retreating?"

While I agree the op was a bit judgmental (a bit ?!). Is everyone on here saying they never ever look at what someone is wearing and think “oh dear that’s not very flattering” ? I know I do, be they old or young thin or not….so shoot me…
