Thinning hair

I saw a photograph of me taken from the back yesterday and my hair looked very thin on the crown, to the extent that I could clearly see my scalp through it. I’m in my seventies (just!) with dark hair that I currently colour every 6 weeks or so. Hubby confirmed that I am ‘looking a bit thin on top’. I’ve looked on the internet and there are several products I can try but just wondered, before I go shopping, if anybody has any recommendations for shampoos/treatments that they have had success with? Or is this just another age thing I have to live with? Many thanks.

Kate you look amazing.I hope mine is half as good.
The maintenance is a similar price to going to the hairdressers every six weeks.Like you I will save for the next replacement hair topper.

You'll look great Susan. Hair is so important to our well being whether we care to admit it or not.

Thank you Kate and I agree that hair is very important to our well being.

I’m ok with my lack of hair when I’m just wearing casual clothes ( which is most of the time these days). But I feel very unfeminine if I put on a dress and don’t have much in the way of hair.

Kate you look wonderful, hold your head up high and wear your hair system with pride! To those who say “it’s only hair”, I’d reply that actually those of us who are losing ours do know that already and are incredibly grateful that it’s nothing life threatening. However it is life changing for many of us and can hugely erode our self confidence. I’ve never been vain or much into “preening” but I can tell you that since being diagnosed with Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia a few years ago I have become increasingly self conscious as the disease has progressed. It’s an irreversible auto immune condition there’s no medication that’s guaranteed to stop it in its tracks and what’s gone can never regrow. Side effects of the meditation that is offered can be nasty so I’m not prepared to go down that route.
Yes I know it’s “only” hair but it’s MY hair and it does matter to me! My lovely hairdresser has truly worked wonders for me in recent years but sadly that’s not enough now so I’ve recently started wearing a wig and I can’t believe what a difference it has made to how I feel about myself. Kind thoughts and gentle hugs to all those in the same sea, albeit sailing in different boats thanks

It's lovely to share stories and hopefully make each other feel better. The lovely people on here certainly do that.

Hey everyone,

I recently got a hair tattoo, and I couldn't be happier with the results! The procedure was straightforward, and the outcome looks incredibly natural. It's given me a significant confidence boost, and I've received numerous compliments already. The best part is that I don't have to worry about hair loss anymore. For anyone considering this option, I highly recommend it. It's a game-changer!

First of all, please don’t be too hard on yourself — thinning at the crown is incredibly common, especially in our 60s and 70s, and colouring can sometimes make it appear more noticeable because of contrast with the scalp. You’re definitely not alone in this.

It’s not necessarily “just something you have to live with,” though. Many people see improvement by switching to scalp-focused treatments rather than just regular shampoos. Products that support scalp health and circulation can sometimes make a visible difference over time.

You might want to look into KilgourMD, which focuses specifically on scalp and hair concerns rather than cosmetic thickening alone. It could be worth exploring alongside speaking to your GP or a pharmacist, especially to rule out things like hormonal or nutritional factors.

Wishing you the very best — and honestly, thinning hair is far more common (and normal) than we realise.

Everyone's physiology is unique, but I've found that PERFECTIL tablets (available at supermarkets) correct my thinning hair surprisingly quickly. Too quickly to affect the growth, so they must somehow plump out the individual hairs from within. Anyway I'm very happy with Perfectil.

Has anyone tried the hair spray which is supposed to encourage follicles to grow that was on Dragons Den. It gets great reviews. I don’t know if I’m allowed to name the product on Gransnet. I have ordered a can and will report on progress if any!

There is no cure! Hair fibres mask the problem very well. You can buy them in every shade.

This. I use hair fibres when I'm going anywhere where I need to look decent.
