How long would you let your hair get after 70

My dear grandma, never cut her hair and it and it was down to her waist, so I suppose sometimes she must have trimmed it or it woukd have been down to the floor.it was put up every morning into a low chignon. It doesn’t seem fashionable to let older people to have such long hair these days, mine rests in my shoulder and I will have a few inches off next week. How long would you go?

Age is just a number. We can wear our hair long, short or mid-length at any age. Just go with what suits you, and what you like.

I would agree with that. The only problem I can see would be if you have very long hair and find it difficult to manage yourself, perhaps if you have arthritis or something similar. Long hair can be very heavy when wet, especially if it's thick, so could be tricky if you can't cope with doing it yourself. Other than that, I think we should all wear our hair however we want it!

My is down to my waist but I never wear it down, always put up in various styles, it is very very thin, and does not hold any shape when short. It is easy and dry very quickly.

This idea about long hair wrong for older women or short is masculine, is in my view, misogynist.
As far as I am concerned women have been emancipated for many years and should be able to please themselves how they wear their hair without constant judgement by other women whether they are 17 or 70.

Great look, Theoddbird!

I have a friend in her late 80s whose hair is knee length! It's pure white and still thick. She usually wears it in a tight bun. When she was in hospital a few years ago they almost insisted she have it cut because they didn't have the time to deal with it, so she had to wear it up 24/7 the whole time she was there.

In my youth my hair was long enough to sit on. I couldn't be bothered with up-dos so just wore it loose or in a ponytail if it got in my way. I washed it every morning and let it dry on the way to work. One hot summer day I decided to have it cut. I marched into a men's barbers and asked him to cut it. He certainly did and I walked out with it similar to a boy's French crop. I loved it! My mother was horrified. But it was so easy to manage and quite liberating.

My hair is now white and an eartip length bob. I cut it myself because I won't pay £50 a month for a salon cut. But I am now considering a (Judi Dench Pixie) Cut because I'm struggling to blowdry my hair, it really makes my arms and shoulders ache. Not sure if it will suit me now though and it will need regular trimming. But the great thing about hair is if you don't like a cut it will grow out eventually.

I had the chin length bob that swung forward and hid my face for years, but post chemo when it grew back, I realised I liked it very short and off my face. I was revealed! Recently I have tried growing it again but gave up in the hot weather and it's very short again now.
I suppose it's each to her own and how thick your hair is. These days I shall keep it short.

A little perturbed by the idea of "to LET an older person have long hair". So you think they should be asking permission from 'someone'? I'm nearly 70 and not asking permission from anyone. And I'd deliberately grow my hair if someone was trying to force it to be cut. Why do some people feel we should treat older people like 2 year olds. Fair enough if a person is suffering from dementia or their decision making capabilities are compromised, otherwise NO.

“A picture is worth a thousand words……..”

No back view available so here’s a photograph taken last year, just after my 71st birthday. I visit my stylist every eight weeks or so for a cut and colour and rarely wear my hair up as I have hearing aids (and big ears!!)

Cambia Wed 07-Sept-22 14:52:05

As long as I like!

nipsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 15:42:45

As I've got the straightest fine hair, I keep it as short as possible. I have a hairdresser who is very good at cutting and he knows just what to do with it.

GreyKnitter Wed 07-Sept-22 16:16:39

Love my short grey hair even if others on here might consider it masculine. I have my hair cut every 6 weeks and I’m happy to pay the price at my local hairdresser. Ps. I have tried a few local establishments before I’ve found one who does it just the way I like. It’s not cheap but nothing like £50 for a wash, cut, and blow dry

This is a picture of my 'prong' with which I keep my very long hair up, grown since the pandemic started, and kept because I love the corkscrew curls that now sprout out of the top of my updo after over 50 months of twirling.... I'm wondering if any of those on this thread who have long hair may point me towards a supplier of similar 'prongs'. Despite several frantic searches both on line and in shops, I cannot find another apart from those made of plastic which slip out and others which have teeth which cut my hair into short and very annoying whips... BTW, I'm 72... and desperate to find another prong. There is a panic whenever I lose this one...

I pin my hair up and buy lovely hair claws from TegenAccessories on line seadragon. I’m not sure if they have that type of clip but they have lovely clips for all types and length of hair. They are not cheap, but great quality and some French handmade. Videos showing how to dress different styles too.

I wear mine down past my shoulders and feathered in at the sides. I've a friend who chirped on about me about trying it shorter cos I was getting older. I tried it and I found it harder to manage, it sat out and I looked like a mushroom. I have thick, red hair and find the weight of it seems to keep it straighter. I'm not listening to anyone now, it's my hair and I can have it whatever way I please.

Oldmutton

I wouldn't! Just short for me!

Same here- I have mine very short and love it; I would hate to faff around with long hair.

f77ms Wed 07-Sept-22 17:20:13

I've had mine cut into a shoulder length Bob , long doesn't suit me anymore . I wouldn't go much shorter because I wouldn't feel feminine and I need all the help I can get at 71 !

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 17:26:46

Good for you Alioop. When my hair was short it was so much harder to manage, took so much time to style. Long hair really is just so easy and quick to blow dry, though people with shorter hair think otherwise.

netflixfan Wed 07-Sept-22 17:42:50

As long as you like. But if it’s grey wear it up or in a bun, not a pony tail or loose. Too witchy. Unless you like a witchy look of course.

SolitarySpirit Wed 07-Sept-22 17:44:57

I lost all my hair the last time I had chemo, I thought I’d be ok with it as I’d had a grade 4 before now but it upset me so much that I’ve vowed that I’ll never cut my hair again. It’s collar length curly at the moment (it was straight before) and I’ll keep on growing it unless of course chemo has a say in it again.

SolitarySpirit Wed 07-Sept-22 17:48:40

I quite like the witchy look Netflix fan so if it gets long enough it’s loose or a pony tail for me every time. ???

4allweknow Wed 07-Sept-22 17:50:38

Had mine cut in a short style only 6 months ago. Very fine, straight hair showing a bit of thinning on top. With short it is easy to fluff up on the top, no dragging down with weight of long hair. Love it, daily wash and dry, quick rough up with a few light sprays of hairspray and comb into shape. Ready for the day.

SolitarySpirit Wed 07-Sept-22 17:53:41

Seadragon, if you Google hairdressing clips they’ll come up in your search. I got mine off Amazo, you can get all different coloured ones too.

NotTooOld Wed 07-Sept-22 17:58:20

Theoddbird

If my hair was thicker I would probably grow it long enough to pin up....would love to be able to do that. It isn't though so I have a pixie cut. I always have a bandana round head and tied on top. I have around thirty...a colour to go with whatever I wear

Love the bandana. What a good idea.

netflixfan Wed 07-Sept-22 17:59:42

Go for it Solitary Spirit! A friend of mine has long grey hair and she has recently had blue highlights as well v. Striking!
