Bar shampoo - anyone ever tried it?

I bought some bar shampoo and bar conditioner to try and reduce the plastic that comes into my house. Used it today for the first time - it did a good job.

Anyone else tried it?

I tried a shampoo bar 3times a week, but after 4 weeks my hair still felt sticky and greasy, it was if I couldn't rinse it out properly. I read you need time for your hair to get used to the change, but I had to use a vinegar rinse to stop my hair looking dark. Reluctantly I gave up with it in the end as I felt I was using lots more hot water with all the rinsing. I would like to try again though to get rid of the plastic bottle

I have always thought it would be difficult to use on long hair. Mine is below my shoulders and I use ‘normal’ shampoo and conditioner. Anyone know?

My hair is shoulder length and a bar shampoo is fine for it. I rub it on my hair close to my head then gradually scoop up the longer ends, usually there's enough shampoo to do it all.
I did give my GCs one to use on holiday. It didn't last well and when it was nearly finished my GD got bits of soap stuck in her hair.

I have tried both. I didn’t like the conditioner but since I rarely use it anyway I just keep my usual bottle-it lasts for ages. The shampoo bar is OK but I find shampoo from a bottle rinses out better and leaves my hair feeling good. Visitors can choose, as both are on offer.

My daughter uses a bar - kept in a little hanging bag - and it lasts for ages, so no more plastic bottles. I'm allergic to soap and detergent so use bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a cup of water. A vinegar rinse adds shine.

Gruum has worked well for my short hair.

This is explained in the link I gave. Hair soap needs rinsing out with a mild vinegar solution, proper bar shampoo has the right pH and does it all in one go. You probably had hair soap.

Use them all the time. I buy from Gruum and am very happy with their products.

Yes used lush soap and conditioner bars... It was the coal tar scent and my hair always smells so clean...

I’ve got shampoo bar from Aveda, I’ve only used it a couple of times, I would say not quite as good as their regular shampoo but great for travelling and of course zero plastic. I’ve never seen conditioner in a bar, I’d be a bit dubious as my hair is coloured and don’t think it would be gloopy enough.

I tried all sorts of bars and have now settled on one that is amazing for my hair. It seemed expensive at £8 but has lasted over a year and it is a wash and conditioner combined.
The thing to remember when trying most bars is that it takes a few weeks to see the actual effects and sometimes they seem to make your hair worse for a short while as the residue from previous products wash out.
The bar I use (Zero Waste Path) didn't need this transition phase!

That's interesting Hetty58.
How do you use the bicarb?

I have used shampoo and conditioner bars for a while now, l love the coconut ones from Kinkind.

floss57 Tue 13-Sept-22 12:19:30

Yes I've used a few - They are no different to ordinary shampoos and conditioners apart from the price and how long they last. I bought one to try costing me near £7 - the bar was minute when it arrived and if left in shower very quickly vanished. The fragrance was nice but at that price you must be joking!!!!

Yes I had a gift of a shampoo bar and am very pleased with it. I cant remember the brand. The only drawback is that it needs a special place to put in a shower cubicle. Otherwise I have a dispenser for bodywash and other shampoos for various members of the household and that keeps things tidy. A net bag might be an idea? And for travel and going to gym we used to have special soap boxes .....

My Daughter told me about them ages ago- i tried it but it left my hair very dry.- maybe as it was lush? I think theyre a good idea for travel- maybe i should try other makes? I got my son a 'cleansing' one to shift the hair clay styling gunk but he does not seem impressed tbh.I havent seen one for coloured hair which is what i need really.

PamSJ1 Tue 13-Sept-22 12:26:26

My first one lasted 8 months Shine On from Bath Bubble and Beyond - I have short hair. Unfortunately it was out of stock when I came to re-order so got another one (Garnier) OK but not quite as good for my hair. I'm goig to try and find the original one. Both were under £4. I'm still using the conditioner I got at the same time almost 11 months ago.

The one I got first was good for coloured hair

I converted to bar shampoo a while back to make things easier when travelling (haven't travelled for 4 years now) and to save on plastic bottles in the bathroom. Great stuff. not sure if it works out cheaper but a bar lasts ages. I've never used conditioner, but I've never seen solid conditioner here in Germany.

Beware the different kinds, though. There is "hair soap" and "bar shampoo" - the shampoo is better, apparently.

You can, indeed, buy conditioner bars, as well as shampoo

I think it is a case of perfecting your technique, but should be fine with longer hair. I did try one bar that left my hair feeling stiff and a bit sticky but did look very thick which was a plus. I called the company and they said to persevere my hair needed to adjust. I will be honest I didn’t but did try other brands of shampoo bars one being Faith in Nature and they were great.

Overthemoongran Tue 13-Sept-22 12:46:46

I bought both shampoo and conditioner bars from Lush, for travelling, but as I haven’t used them for so long due to COVID restrictions I completely forgot which was which. On a recent trip I did use them but thought I’d got them the wrong way round, so rinsed to start again, then got some in my eye which was ten times more painful than any shampoo I’ve ever had in my eye, used the wrong one yet again as I couldn’t see a thing….I thought I was going to be in the hotel shower all day - forever rinsing off!

Anitae Tue 13-Sept-22 12:54:36

I've been using shampoo bars for few years now. No brained really. I only buy when on offer. I like gurum best. I colour my own hair so use the conditioner that comes with it. Must have saved loads over the last few years. I'd always have a few different bottles of shampoo and conditioner on the go!! Saves money and the planet.

GrannyBettie Tue 13-Sept-22 12:57:40

I use the Aveda shampoo bar and I find I have to wash it twice through whereas with bottle shampoo I only use once. I find it does leave a bit of a residue and thus wash my hair more frequently. It does last forever though.

Missingmoominmama Tue 13-Sept-22 13:15:50

I use Grümm- they’re great- no residue build up, like with some shampoos.

mistymitts Tue 13-Sept-22 13:18:54

How about this then…my sister has beautiful hair, glossy and lush, she only washes it in water and never ever uses shampoo or conditioner. Apparently, your natural oils are not happy with shampoo. Her hair looks clean and glossy.

sharonarnott Tue 13-Sept-22 13:37:08

It conjures up images of having to have my hair washed with a bar of fairy toilet soap when I was a child. I vividly remember the itchy scalps and seriously bad dandruff and that is enough to put me off of trying them ?
