Bar shampoo - anyone ever tried it?

I bought some bar shampoo and bar conditioner to try and reduce the plastic that comes into my house. Used it today for the first time - it did a good job.

Anyone else tried it?

Can anyone recommend a shampoo bar and conditioner bar for greasy hair? I thought that as I got older, after the menopause (20 years ago!) my hair would be less greasy and I could wash it just once a week, but I need to wash it every 2-3 days.

Yes, they are good, especially the Lush ones. I have coarse hair that tends to frizz , and the Lush bars for dry hair work fine

I bought a bar of shampoo and conditioner in one from the pound shop recommended in a magazine or paper a little while ago, it was ace better than a famous make which cost me nearly £12 for separate bars and they didn't do as well. needless to say, l still have the more expensive bars, which l will use up.

I use a Lush one, it's blue with green flecks in it. A quick scliff cross the hair is all I need. It cost £9 but lasts forever. I haven't yet had the bar of conditioner, but will when I next need to replenish.

Remember there are two types - one is normal shampoo in a solid bar, the other is soap-based which will take a while for your hair to adjust to and you will need a vinegar rinse. It can make your hair feel quite dirty. I haven’t the patience so I’ll carry on using the shampoo bars. My favourites are Bounty Hunter and one from Gruum.

I've been using the Faith in Nature shampoo bar for the last 6 months. I got it from Holland & Barrett and I can't say that I've seen any difference in the condition of my hair, although a friend of mine recently commented that it had a lovely sheen to it. But this may be something to do with the Argan oil and serum I'm using to smooth and condition the ends with.

I'm not so keen on the Conditioner bar as I find it hard to handle and apply to my long hair. I don't think it does a very good job as the ends have become very dry and I'm having to use Argan oil or serum. I've also noticed that, instead of washing my hair every 4 days, it's looking greasy after 3 days. Is it the conditioner or the oil? I don't know, but it seems that in order to save the planet by using less plastic and parabens, I'm having to use more water and electricity to wash and dry my lanky locks.

However the bars are great for travelling. I let them dry after use and wrap each one in a muslin cloth and put them back in the little boxes they came in. I aim to buy some soap containers at some stage..

Yes they are brilliant and save space in suitcase when traveling

Devongirl4 Tue 13-Sept-22 17:05:50

Used them for years. I’m in Europe for a week- with my bar that can just be in my case, not the 100ml bag thing. Win win

Fleurpepper Tue 13-Sept-22 17:06:51

Been using some too- small brands, all made with natural products, rather than Lush - does a great job, no plastic, and fabulous for travelling too.

I’ve still got both left in bottle but def think I’ll give them a go when they’re ready to be replaced.

garnet25 Tue 13-Sept-22 17:08:43

I've used the Garnier ones from Boots they are great.

The Zero Waste Path one I use is a 2 in 1 and comes for several different hair types. It’s quite a small bar, but I rub it between my hands and then into my hair which I wash around 4 times a week. My last bar lasted 11 months. My hair is fine, curly with a tendency to frizz so a conditioner is definitely needed. www.peacewiththewild.co.uk/product-brands/zero-waste-path/?gclid=CjwKCAjw1ICZBhAzEiwAFfvFhDsSkgwxwkfsBqiGvFQijlFuItlnPY1fg1r_sAikV_rNt5RC0MWZixoCGJgQAvD_BwE (I get it locally)
Before I tried it I had virtually settled for Gruum, shampoo and conditioner bars separately. Like others I recommend trying them as well. www.gruum.com/?s=Shampoo+bar&post_type=product&dgwt_wcas=1

At the first attempt I didn't like the feel of my hair - slightly sticky - but have persevered and it feels alright now. I like the idea of less plastic and it smells lovely. Mine was Apple Shine from My Little Echo Shop.

I've tried a few. Lush ones are definitely the best. Don't use the conditioner bar and my hair has been good.

Harmonypuss Tue 13-Sept-22 18:01:46

I use the Garnier ones (Asda £7.99) on my just past shoulder length hair.

I've had one shampoo bar from Home Bargains that cost about £1 which was OK but didn't smell as good as the Garnier ones but it did the job.

wetflannel Tue 13-Sept-22 18:25:17

I use bar soap and love it for my hair, I'm a vegan so it fits in with my ethos of being cruelty free.

Quichette Tue 13-Sept-22 18:33:53

I use the purple Ethique bar for grey hair. I have hair below my shoulders and find it easy to use. Germanshepherdsmum, I use a vinegar rinse (2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in a pint of warm water) after shampoo and before conditioner and find it rinses out very quickly. I have a stainless steel narrow tray with a stainless mesh drainer to keep it on, which keeps it dry. I wash my hair about every 4 days in summer and weekly in winter. It's quite dry and tends to frizz when humidity is high, all summer here! Since radiation treatment for head and neck I have a great deal of shorter hair growth that frizzes unmercifully when it's damp! Other than that my hair is in good shape.

My foster son has spe ial needs and managed to use a whole bottle of shampoo and a whole bottle of shower gel every week. Sometimes in just 5 days. I sometimes wonder if he drinks it. Now I have given him a shampoo bar and deodorising soap and he seems to getting on well. Bars have lasted 3 weeks so far. Works out far cheaper.

Please try and ensure it doesn’t contain palm oil in it…the rain forests in Borneo, home of the orangutan are being decimated to make way for palm oil plantations.

Does bar shampoo lather up nicely?

bridie54 Tue 13-Sept-22 20:17:54

I’m a convert to bars for both shampoo and conditioner. Bought from Lush and are pink, can’t remember any name but for dry hair and I’ve found both to be good and very long lasting. My shampoo bar is disappearing faster than the conditioner yet I use both every wash, weekly for me.
One good thing is the conditioner bar is differently shaped so no confusing it with the shampoo when the specs are off in the shower.
There is a cork holder with a lid you can buy but only the shampoo bar fits it. I like someone’s idea of a string bag to hang them in. One to add to the crochet ‘to do’ list.

Germanshepherdsmum

I have always thought it would be difficult to use on long hair. Mine is below my shoulders and I use ‘normal’ shampoo and conditioner. Anyone know?

I have long hair and have no issues with bar shampoo. I've used Gruum - got a free offer a couple of times. I like how my hair feels after washing with it and of course, also reduces use of plastic.

I have really sensitive skin, and use cider vinegar to wash my hair with - no more itchy scalp, started doing it to reduce plastic. About once every 6 weeks I wash my hair with baby shampoo, but would love to switch that to a bar shampoo - any brand suggestions?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 14-Sept-22 09:17:02

I've used both solid shampoo and one which had a conditioner incorporated and they were fine for a while until I developed an itchy scalp, so I had to go back to the plastic containers. Maybe I'll give them another try soon.

I have crocheted bags hanging in my shower: one just to hold the shampoo bar and the other with a very long string - I leave the soap in it and soap myself through the bag. I did it initially because I have had back surgery and cannot bend very well, so it stopped me dropping the soap on the floor of the shower and having to find a way of picking it up!
