Does anyone influence what you wear?

My friend always says she misses having a daughter, as, to her, mothers of sons never dress just as well as those with daughters to ā€˜advise’ them. If you have daughters ( or gay sons, if the stereotypes are to be believedšŸ˜„), do they influence your choices?

Shinamae Thu 02-Mar-23 11:25:02

No….

FannyCornforth Thu 02-Mar-23 11:26:33

My mom used to say the same.
I’m not sure if it’s true though!

No. I enjoy choosing what I wear.

Calendargirl Thu 02-Mar-23 11:34:33

My DD lives abroad.

If she was over here, I don’t think she would advise me.

Neither of us have much idea of style or fashion, and we aren’t that bothered about it.

I have a DIL, but her ideas and mine wouldn’t be the same.

My bank account influences what I wear!

dragonfly46 Thu 02-Mar-23 11:38:50

Absolutely not - my DD and I have quite different tastes.
I wear what I feel good in and so does she but never the twain shall meet!!!

My DDs would only influence me or give an opinion if they were with me when I was buying something or if I asked them. Same the other way round.

I am influenced by my daughter as she can be relied upon to tell me, honestly, if something doesn't suit me.

Redhead56 Thu 02-Mar-23 11:57:47

Not really I have my own likes and dislikes. Sometimes I might choose something different my dd or dil might compliment me which is nice.

Kate1949 Thu 02-Mar-23 12:00:57

No. I choose my clothes.

MiniMoon Thu 02-Mar-23 12:07:22

My daughter and I have wildly different tastes and dress sense. I wouldn't dream of asking her for advice. My husband's advice is what I look for when buying new clothes.

V3ra Thu 02-Mar-23 12:08:37

I prefer to shop for every day clothes by myself.
The exception has been when I bought wedding outfits, and then my husband came with me and advised me. He's surprisingly good at it!

No

However OH will comment if I get it very wrong, only once in 4 yrs.

I love clothes, and particularly shoes, but I have wasted a lot on them in the past. My daughter, from being very tiny has had an amazing sense of style, she starting picking the colours and style of her own clothes out from about two, and she’s far better than me at looking well put together. A few years ago she helped me put a capsule wardrobe together, and I tend to stick within the range for shape and colours. It sounds boring, but it’s really easy and saves me wasting a fortune on things that don’t work.

Not really, we have very different styles. DD will sometimes suggest things that she thinks will suit me and are my style but since she lives 200 miles away that's not often. OH is not really much use either - no sense of style at all and takes a long time to adapt to new things so I would be wearing the same style and colour forever if it was up to him 😁

Yes, I listen to both DDs for both clothes and makeup though have to admit sometimes it does go wrong. Hence a post I made about "Care home chic" which is what DH called me dressed in what they had bought.
One is good with clothes the other with makeup. Neither dress like me but one always sneaks a look at my sandals and disappears with a pair I have bought and never worn, usually because they are too high.
DH has the usual put-downs this week he described a new linen shirt as being like his grandmother's "tablecloth". It's gone back.grin

DD2 is good with make-up and clothes for herself - DD1 not so good, as she’s spent years on building sites, wearing quite an unflattering uniform - think hard hat, hi-viz vest and safety boots!
I’m usually quite decisive, but if I’ve a bit of doubt about something, I value DD2’s opinion - not that I always take notice of it.

No.

I buy what I like, have always relied on my own taste in clothes.
To be honest I never really thought about what anyone else thinks.
I was very surprised to meet a woman I'd worked with over 50 years ago who told me they were all "in awe" at my style ! Wish someone had told me then...lol.
My daughter used to wear similar styles to me including the high heels all the time.Sadly she's bedbound most of the time now but still sends me pictures of things she's found online that she would love to wear and that she thinks I would like too.My GD's ,mid teens will happily raid my wardrobe for shoes and boots and tops .
Today I'm all in black , polo neck jumper with midi length pleated leather skirt and black high heeled ankle boots .Not everyones taste but I'm happy in it and my OH just told me I look "amazing"

MawtheMerrier Thu 02-Mar-23 12:49:11

Not directly but during the pandemic I seemed to lose my ā€œtouchā€ in deciding what to wear for the very few occasions I went anywhere. I think I missed seeing what other people were wearing and found it hard to choose from what I had in the wardrobe I can remember coming back from a (very cold and damp) open air Shakespeare in Regents Park and thinking Why on earth didn’t I wear a particular jumper and (smart) raincoat - mostly because I’d forgotten I had them.
So yes, seeing other people can inform my choices.

That sounds a cool outfit, paddyann. I guess you’re not gardening, hoovering, or cleaning the cooker today? Or maybe you are! I love clothes and have lots that I love wearing, but for day to day I usually end up in a practical ā€˜uniform’ of jeans and jumper.

DD could sell snow to eskimos. I have bought a number of items, not just, of clothing after being talked into buying them her. Whether I have always felt later these were good buys, is a moot point.

More to the point is that DDiL, DGD and I have similar tastes, essential leggings/jeggings/skinny jeans, with big sweaters or layers over and Doc Martens (DDiL, DGD) and clumpy shoes (me)

In fact these days, i am more likely to shop with DGD, nearly 16, or possibly DDiL than with DD, and I have more confidence in their taste.

No one really, although there are a couple of women whose style I admire. Judi Dench is one.
