Has anyone got a really good lemon zester?
Good Morning Tuesday 12th May 2026
When a political leader lies on their CV - can you trust them?
My friend always says she misses having a daughter, as, to her, mothers of sons never dress just as well as those with daughters to ‘advise’ them. If you have daughters ( or gay sons, if the stereotypes are to be believed😄), do they influence your choices?

Hello everyone this is my first post on GN 🙂. My granddaughter started to advise me on clothes when she was 8!
In the past , I've ditched some really nice clothes because of derogatory comments from my children .
As I pay for them myself I reserve the right to choose them myself !
I have to admit to being quite choosy and I have a distinct style .
I look in charity shops first and I have a couple of friends in the rag trade otherwise it's sales .
One of my friends ,who is a very tall and chubby lady allows her 13 year old daughter to select her wardrobe .
Apart from having to wait for her to finish dressing for well over an hour when we go out -all of us have suppressed our reaction to her choices .
She wears very tight low cut tops and short clingy skirts with enormous bows in her hair .
None of us would dream of saying anything !
I dress a bit like an old hippie, or at least that's what DD says. Long skirts, baggy tops, t-shirts and jeans, colourful clothing, never black.
I think they suit me and it's what I feel myself in. Pretty much the same things I wore in the 1970s.
I mix and match to put an outfit together which I feel comfortable wearing. Nothing to do with what is fashionable or not. I’m not influenced by anyone in particular but if a see anyone wearing something I like, I would try that look.
Same here Marydoll. DD1 is the same size as me and often ‘borrows’. Visiting her last week, I followed her upstairs to see a new pair of trousers she had bought. Looking around her stash of clothes, I pointed out some lovely pieces she had….they were mine! And she didn’t even blush.
When I was young and lived in London had quite trendy clothes - so for my wedding in the 60's I had traditional white wedding but my going away outfit was very up to date gold tunic with metal fastenings and hot pants!! But have champagne tastes and beer money, so would rather find a cashmere jumper in a charity shop than horrible acrylic stuff. Love silk and pure cotton so buy when I see a bargain that I know will suit me and last a long time. Have a lovely sky blue silk shirt with long sleeves and a collar. cost me £12.50 in a sale over 9 years ago. Still wearing it with black trousers. Most of all want to feel comfortable and decent. I just notice that oh the things that I am wearing are now in fashion, dont really care , have far more important things to spend my time and money on.
Yes, although like many here DD1 lives over 200 miles away. E.g. she messaged me with some pictures of an outfit she thought I’d look good in for a wedding we are going to. I went to the shop she mentioned and tried the outfit on. Guess what I’m wearing for the wedding?
We are meeting up with her and DGD1 before the wedding, when my DGD will do my hair and my make up.
Mostly though, I make up my own mind.
All my life uncharitable comments have unhappily influenced my choices, or made me not like a garment any more because my mother, a girl-friend or my husband has been less than enthusiastic about it.
Obviously, this was worse when I was a young woman - my mother completely spoiled a long Indian unbleached cotton dress with hand-croteched insets in light brown in the sleeves, by saying , "What a nice nightie" while I was unpacking my suitcase, having just come home for the summer holiday, when I was 17.
Now my clothes come predominantly from the charity shops, but it is getting harder and harder to find anything in my size (European 38) as those who givee to charity seem all to be very large ladies indeed!
No.
I love to go shopping with my daughter, she's great at picking things out for me to try and I value her opinion. I certainly don't dress to please anyone apart from myself but that doesn't mean I'm not happy to have a second opinion and I'll often ask OH what he thinks of something I've bought.
My daughter and I have a very different body shape and style of dressing, so she doesn't really influence what I wear. She does raid my bag and shoe collection though, and now she's in her thirties has started to get interested in my coat collection.
As a beautician she does say my skin care routine is a bit lazy!
I have a friend who always looks very chic and I have borrowed a few ideas from her, although again we have different styles.
I must say that few peoples’ opinions influence what I wear, rightly or wrongly. My daughters’ styles are very different than mine as was my mother’s and as is my sister’s. I do have to question whether certain things are age appropriate now as I often rather like the new incarnations of things I have been wearing for years but might not suit the older me! My ex liked a completely different style (much ‘safer’!) which I ignored. Perhaps that’s why he’s my ex! I have always had the confidence to dress as I wish and think looks ok. If people don’t like it, they needn’t look!
When I was a 16 year old in my first job I asked the advice of an older woman about clothes suitable for the office. However I quickly acquired my own sense of style. Since then I have never been influenced by anyone else as to what to wear, least of all my family.
No, I look in the mirror, if I feel clothes look right then I wear them.
I just wear what I like. I usually go shopping with my sister who's style is completely different to mine so I never ask her opinion. I did had trouble though choosing new glasses at the opticians the other day so another customer and I helped each other pick which ones to get.
Absolutely Theexwife.
So many shop assistance in the past have said "wow that looks great" and you know it just isn't you. Trust your instinct.
My daughters don’t really influence what I wear as we have very different tastes. I guess the person who influences me most is my husband. I always ask his opinion if i buy something new or if we are going out as I trust him to tell me how I actually look.
My big fat bottom influences what I wear !’
My DD may say, that looks nice, if she sees something when I'm clothing hunting, but would never go further than that. I haven't bought her clothes in over20 years either, as she hated all my choices.
No, nobody influences me at all.
I really listen to my daughter as she has brought me into the 21st century. She is tasteful and good with colours and shoes! However if I listened to my mother I would still be in pleated skirts snd frumpy blouses. My daughter has taken years off me and I am really pleased with the result.
I have put this on Gransnet before but worth a repeat. I asked my younger daughter ( adult) what she thought of the top I was trying on, her reply
" it's alright for you mother but I wouldn't wear it " make of that what you will
No - I have a ‘uniform’ - comfortable trousers (joggers for at home) - polo necks in various thicknesses (hate a bare neck) and Fitflop trainers or sandals plus a pair of Doc Martens. If a very hot summer, have a couple of long linen dresses - so I can wear nothing underneath!
Joanna Lumley would influence me if I could afford it!
I used to be influenced by DH until one day he said that VPL was ‘quite attractive’. It was then that I realised he had no taste whatsoever!
