Can anyone recommend a comfortable bra?

I'm not particularly large busted, and although overweight wouldn't say that I had rolls of fat round my midriff, but I cannot find a bra that is comfortable to wear. I have had two goes at getting fitted properly and last summer spent a lot of money on three new bras, but can't wear any of them. One is much too tight and the other two cause me to get a rash under my bust - I think I might be allergic to lycra if that is what they are made of. I started having this trouble really after I had shingles round my right side rib area and probably nerve damage is part of the problem. I can't manage without a bra, but can't seem to wear one with comfort - I have to take it off it every early evening for that reason. I would be pleased if people who have had a similar problem could give me some ideas for how to find something I could wear as the ones I am wearing all the time (because they are just about comfortable) are just about worn out and need replacing.

Bras are humanity’s gift of classy engineering. And a girl’s nemesis.

One of my very first jobs when I was young was in lingerie at Sak’s Fifth Ave. I learned from the experts in fitting bras that most women are wearing the WRONG size.

You have a smorgasbord of styles from $ to $$$. Choose wisely and as much as you don’t want to, dedicate a couple hrs of bra shopping - trying on at the store first to find your fit.

Sometimes you need a larger cup, or a band size larger. Try underwires vs regular, front closures vs back. **Big tip - the wider the band is underarm may be the support you need.

My personal war with bras as I got older - was shoulder straps!! I HATE them. Now all I wear are strapless (when I absolutely have to), but you need the proper fit and size to stay up. My brand is Wacoal.
No longer wearing any in retirement!

A friend decided to stop wearing bras and before very long her breasts looked like two long skinny flaps which almost reached her waist.
I don’t like bras but having that picture in my head, I wear them. Mostly. smile

Had a masectomy so many issues with bras. However M & S have come up with a new one , cropped and reasonable price. I thinks the most comfortable I have ever worn.

I would recommend a soft unwired bra / crop top style bra suitable for low impact exercise such as yoga or Pilates. They’re cheap and you can usually find them in supermarkets with a clothing section such as Tu or F & F or George. Since lockdown I have lived in these and can only wear more structured bras for a few hours as they start to dig in.

I’m probably going against what everybody else is going to say, but I find underwired bras that have been properly fitted by far the most comfortable, because they stop the inevitable droop, and therefore any sweating or tight under bands. I use M&S, and as long as they fit properly I find they are really comfortable.

I agree, I wear Panache bras (called Envy and Clara) which you can get fitted by Bravissimo.

I wear the ones from Avon and Sloggi very comfortable I've Costochrondritis and arthritis I can only wear pull on ones these are nice and soft

I have both of these conditions too and find the sports bra types are by far the most comfortable. I’m not well endowed but am as saggy as the next 68 year old and find these give enough support. Good luck!

‼️ I found relief in cancer/mastectomy bras - ALL cotton - lightly padded - no wires or heavy lycra - absorbent in warm weather - stylish like a sports bra - neutral colors - wash beautifully - very affordable‼️

Marks and Spencers do these. Well worth a look.

Never found bras uncomfy until lost a lot of weight and since then have not been able to find a comfortable one at all. Went to a specialist shop to be measured for the first time ever and got what I thought was a totally incorrect size but did appear (in the shop) to fit. However found the bands way too tight even if the cups seemed to fit and really too uncomfy to wear. Tried several others since but not one fits well and/or is comfortable. Previously worn the same size M&S bras for many years without a problem.

You need to know two measurements when choosing a bra, both taken by measuring all the way round your body:

Your exact measurement under your bosom and your measurement at the highest point of your bosom.

Next when looking for bras, make sure you have your reading glasses and/or a magnifying glass with you and check what the elastic is made of. This should be included in the specifications on the label as to what the bra is made of.

If like me, you are allergic to polyester then the sewing thread may be causing the problem, or the elastic may contain polyester.

You could try covering the elastic on the bras you have that are not too tight with pure cotton tape sewn securely so it entirely covers the elastic.

Another solution is to buy or sew some very thin chemises, preferably in pure silk and wear them under your bra. This lessens the irritation caused by elastic, hooks and eyes, sewing thread etc.

Burda used to make sewing patterns for underskirts, chemises and french knickers and probably still do - I just use the pattern I have.

Some shops do still stock pure cotton bras, but you will need to google these, as I don't live in the UK or buy clothes there, so I can't help with a stockist.

The best bra fitting and bras I have had were by Fantasie. Only place available to me now that sells them is 40 miles away and tge orice has become just a bit expensive. Had a fitting at M & S two months ago and came out with two different styles, both underwired. Good fit, stylish and relatively cheap. Sensitivity from shingles, doubt you'll find anything that doesn't cause a problem. Sports bra would be worth a try.

I have a few bravissimo bras. Properly fitted but wow are they uncomfortable! Okay for the first couple hours then it begins! So unless I’m going somewhere that calls for me to wear clothes that require such a contraption, I now use pull on crop tops I got some very comfortable ones from Amazon. Can try on to your heart’s content at home and return what is no good to you. Btw I am a 34 G so I always thought I’d have to wear scaffolding every waking hour. Not true. Hurrah!

I'd been wearing 38B for years & then got measured at M & S, turns out I needed 36DD.
Much better fit and comfy, I recommend everyone got measured to ensure a good fit.

I recently purchased a 'Sloggi Zero Feel' bra. The label attached to it informed, so comfortable you forget you've got it on. It certainly is comfortable.

singingnutty Thu 25-May-23 17:24:45

Thanks to all who have given advice on shops and brands to try and also to those who have found that most bras are uncomfortable! I will try and get to Bravissimo, but the nearest branch to me is 40 miles away, so it will be an expedition. I have tried pull-on bras from supermarkets and have found them more comfortable than more conventionally styled ones. I have got a mastectomy one from M & S - I thought it might be ok because after an op like that something kind to the body must be needed. It's in the drawer - I'll go and get it out and give it another try.

I have the same problem I am an h and it drives me mad

Well said BlueBelle….never has been a comfortable bra because we’re not built to have pointy out breasts…..haven’t worn a bra for over 20 years….finially rebelled from this constriction at 50 when realised we all wear them for the wrong reason ….men!! We all should’ve done it when we ditched that other torturous piece of clothing …..the girdle…..but we didn’t!!
I’ve actually been complimented on my bra-less shape by other women ( usually the most bitchy people) and it does seem my constriction free boobs have managed quite well once released to ‘get on with it’😂

singingnutty Thu 25-May-23 18:07:59

Got out the bra I mentioned earlier and put it on - felt like an iron band was round my ribs, so back to the semi comfortable one. I am going out tonight so will need to wear one. I don't want pointy out breasts - just not saggy ones.

Barleysugar Thu 25-May-23 18:36:36

Is there such a thing?

janetsp Thu 25-May-23 19:18:00

I’m a huge fan of Bravissimo.
Their staff are first class and I’ve had fittings both in person and virtually. They are keen to spend time with you and get to know what is important to you i.e. in terms of style, fit, etc. They won’t sell you anything you are not 100% happy with.
My size is 32G and I wouldn’t consider going anywhere else.

I always wore underwired bras and found they were cutting in and uncomfortable. I went into M & S and got myself measured. I was in the correct size but the assistant went and got some non wired bras for me to try. I now have a full cup non underwired support bra, think they are the up to H range. I still have to take it off before dinner as I just love to 'hang loose' and gone are my days of going braless, but then I am a little heavier now.

Sally at Amplebosom is your woman. I am due to have a DEXA scan next week. The hospital advised that if I wore a bra with metal fasteners or underwires then i would have to remove it. I don't want to do that, so I asked for advice from Amplebosom. Sally was consulted. I am very large breasted. Sally recommended a step into bra with no fastenings which is just right. It is very soft yet manages to give more support than I expected. It only cost around £24,00 and arrived within 24 hours. Sally told me exactly the size I would need and she was spot on. I expected just to be able to wear it for the scan but actually I think it will also be suitably for wearing under my long loose kaftans in the summer to stay cool and comfortable. Sally really knows her stuff. They have a facebook site too. I have also bought swimsuits and more structured bras from them in the past when I needed both to wear to my aquarobics classes.

I don’t understand the comment ‘there’s no such thing as a comfortable bra’. I have a large bust and normally wear M & S but do have other brands. I always wear underwired and have always slept in my bra. I think if you have a bra that’s cutting into your sides/ribs then buy a larger chest size and smaller cup. I’m never aware I’m wearing one.

2507C0 - what have you found in a G cup please?

Bravissimo for me but try to go to one of their shops and be properly fitted..
