Well, I can't wear flip flops so that's me undone!!
At least people wear trainers more now and even with skirts or dresses.

Clothes spending
(213 Posts)Following on from another thread, how much do you consider is a lot to spend on an everyday item of clothing?
I must admit I do shudder at spending loads on an item of clothing and anything over £30 for tops or bottoms or £50 for a dress ( I rarely buy or wear dresses) I will spend up to £100 for a good coat. I will look at items in sales usually online as I hate it when there are masses of clothes on rails all jumbled up.
I always think if you are spending £100 plus on one item then your shoes and bag also need to be of a very good quality too. But then I can't bring myself to wear that item as going to town or lunch type outfit.
Is it just me. I could afford it but something would hold me back.
Callistemon21, I really like wearing boots with dresses - as it covers my tiny, skinny, frail-looking ankles and lower legs. I often wear trainers too, much more practical, comfortable and casual.
My own situation is similar to that of Terribull although I’m now a handbag person, as I can no longer wear heels for long periods. As a Pisces, I have ‘difficult’ feet! I hate paying the full price for expensive items and have often lost a bargain waiting for a second of third reduction - I just think that it wasn’t to be. I wrote on another thread about my Burberry Mac, bought in 1989, so what I buy tends to be quality and made to last.

I agree, just slip on a cool floaty dress, a pair of flip flops, and your done.
I struggle with flip flops, but wear sandals and a dress in summer, the same dress with shoes and something under it in late spring/early autumn, and with boots and a cardigan over the lot in winter.
LRavenscroft- I loved your story about your colleague wearing her cocktail dresses to work : go girl !
I love my flip flops, and I’m not a trainer person, but last night one of my granddaughters had on a sweet little dress with trainers, and she looked lovely.
GN is a broad forum, by age life style and income, so why does every thread become dominated by and judged by how limited some people's income is.
Why can we not accept that people are all on different incomes and just accept with uncritical interest how they shop and dress, without having to sneer or do a John Cleese because, heaven help us, someone bought something NEW in SAINSBURY's. How dare they when others are reduced to picking up rags in the street!
Why does everybody have to feel that to contribute to a thread like this, they should only do so if they can claim, they only buy in sales, or just from Charity shops or jumble sales.
Why can't we admit we buy new clothes at full price, do not haunt charity shops and wear garments for less than 25 years before passing them on to a worthy cause.
Some threads are so worthy they could be Victorian.

... because I rarely pay full price. I enjoy a bargain and a deprived childhood, leave me feeling guilty if I were to pay full price. 😉
Couldn’t agree more. We are a broad church, some of us are well off and some are very much not. Must those who are better off keep quiet for fear of offending? The question was asked, I answered honestly (but not completely because I knew what the responses would be): It’s all right for you etc. I’ve just put an Armani jacket in the charity bag because it’s too glitzy for the life I lead now. I hope it will please someone else as it has pleased me, and they won’t complain about its age. Ironically my 20 year old jacket, still very smart, was not what everyone would want (doubtless because it’s not, and never was, throwaway high fashion) - I guarantee they wouldn’t pass it up in the charity shop (which it’s not destined for).
That was in reply to MOnica.
Marydoll you have proved my point perfectly. You are emotionally blackmailing other people who are better off than you or had better childhoods, by implying that anything they say as a result of your post is somehow heartless, selfish and uncaring.
The fact that you do not pay full price and enjoy a bargain is a perfectly acceptable way of shopping, as is buying everything at full price from designer houses. but by the way you have written what you have written, you are loading your self with virtue and stripping the other person of virtue, just because they can afford an expensive dress.
I too feel that people should be able to post honestly, without fear of recrimination about how much they spend.
I have experienced both ends of the financial spectrum and have worked and studied hard to be in the position I am now in.
Me too Mary, butI have found that when one says that someone says they worked at least as hard and have nothing to show for it. It’s sad but I have learned the hard way.

I'm not sure I read the same thread as you, M0nica.
I see posters who, wealthy or less well off, buy where they buy, at whatever price they choose to pay. Donate whenever they choose.
Myself, I don't donate many clothes as I never change size and my style is timeless classic not trendy glitz or sack of potatoes. That's neither good nor bad, I'm frugal as I ever have been.
Threads are boring if nobody shares.
What a load of absolute nonsense. I find your comment is offensive. Monica. You are so totally wrong about me!
I am aware that I am probably at the end of my life, due to chronic ill health. I can no longer go on holiday, nor venture far from home. I have few pleasures left in life and will spend my time and cash the way I wish.
I am certainly not vituous, but will never forget the awful poverty of my childhood and how people sneered at me. DH and I often talk about those days (he was from a similar background) and are still surprised how fortunate we now are.
Shame on you! I 🤬

I'm not criticising btw, I just wish I could wear pretty shoes!!
Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't look as lovely as your DGD whatever I wear 🙂

I did buy some rather more trendy trainers thinking they'd be ok with skirts but I've yet to wear them.
My friend once said thought I had a shoe fetish but no - I'm just forever trying to find a pair that are comfortable without being ugly!
I took my DGD aged 10 shopping yesterday because she wanted new clothes for her holiday. She is at that age, (you know!), where she is chosing for herself and forming an appreciation of fashion. I encouraged her NOT to look at the price tag, but to feel the fabric, consider how the fit suited her and equally important what accessories would complement it and picture where she would be wearing it. It was refreshing to shop with someone who had no true conception of value for money and who wasn't searching for bargains (--like her mum does--!)

One of my granddaughters lived with us for a few years, with her mum and siblings, and I refused to buy her clothes from certain fashion online stores, mainly based in China, even though apparently, everyone bought clothes there.
Now a couple of years on, I’m happy to say she wouldn’t consider it.
Callistemon
I didn’t think you were being critical at all
I am not criticising anyone's shopping patterns, least of all yours marydoll, but you have me over a barrel, because of your situation.
I just wish people could just discuss all sorts of things on GN without those who are not on the breadline constantly being snipped at because they are not poor enough to be virtuous.

Perhaps try Mephisto, cute and comfortable.
maximum I would spend is £40 on a t-shirt, £60 on a skirt, £50 on trousers, £80 0n knitwear, £100 + on a dress/coat/boots/shoes. I buy most my stuff in sainsburys tbh but I have a nice sea salt coat which was expensive but has never leaked and i walk the dog in all weathers. I bought some really nice boots in moshulu sale, which are really nicely made
I have too many clothes really as I am reminded often by he who has very little space in the wardrobe.
PS Poppred, I really felt for you
I'm sure you will look lovely in your new outfit!
Rightly or wrongly, my history has shaped my personality and character and I can see exactly why some posts about spending may upset those who have financial difficulties.
However, does that mean, that there cannot be posts like this, where people cannot post about their purchases?
I'm sure posters, (myself included) are naive/unaware that we appear to be boasting about our purchases/homes/gardens.
I just marvel every day at what I have achieved, but understand that given different opportunities, I may have been one of the posters who is upset by some of the posts here.
at the risk of being called frumpy, I love those pull on trainer things. I bought some nicer more feminine ones from next that they no longer do, a bit similar to this

I have similar Sketchers ones, they make great slippers!
