Do you want to look "smart"

I aim for clean and decent. Especially clean.

I agree but one consolation is that he noticed your outfit!

Mine says exactly the same thing! However that’s fine as I always try to look smart, though not in a business suit and heels way nowadays. I can’t stand scruffiness.

I always intend to look smart, in a classical timeless way, if I'm not in bed or walking dogs/gardening. Obviously nightwear and dog walking are entirely different to everyday attire.

I've always dressed for comfort rather than appearance so have never aimed to dress smart or even smart casual. I do try to wear clean and fresh clothes though there is from time to time an unnoticed porridge stain on the top I'm wearing. Good luck to those who aim to look smart - you'd probably look on me as a right scruff!

And I stopped wearing high heels in my early thirties and became so much happier.

A friend told me once that I always looked stylish - that will do for me!!
Sometimes on a Sunday, however, I can look decidedly scruffy!!

I do co-ordinate and wear things that fit me properly, years of having to for work is hard to shake off, but I know what you mean eddiecat78, I don’t want people to tell me I look smart, that’s what I say to my dog when he’s a clever boy! I prefer it when people say I look nice that day, or that something suits me. I’ve got a very stylish daughter who always notices what I wear and is honest, which is helpful I think.

Ooh, no, smart is not for me - I used to do smart, professionally, but never felt “me”. Most days I wear a tunic top and jeans / jeggings. But I love chunky jewelry and scarves, so jazz the clothes up if I go out to the shops / coffee with friends, etc. I like fairly coordinated colours. We’re all different, I guess you should just feel comfortable (but stylish!) and happy in your clothes.

My DDiL and DGD say I am 'stylish', we often find we are all dressed in a similar style.

DD just thinks I am eccentric and she wouldn't dress like me. DS and DH wouldn't notice if I dressed in a plastic bag.

My father used to drive my mother mad, because his response to anything she wore, was: 'You look nice in anything your wear, dear'.

So take your pick, stylish, eccentric, no one noticing what I wear.

DH always says that, it drives me crazy. Ask his opinion and it's "very smart" honestly!
I asked him a few months ago, as I ducked behind the sofa, I poked my head up and asked him if I went missing would he know what I was wearing? The look on his face gave him away, then the laugh.. Not a clue!
On the plus side I spend too much money on clothes, shoes and handbags, he's not aware.

My DH is always very careful what he says and it's "You look nice"' if I have made an effort. His father always said" Tidy"' to MIL and she went crazy because she took a great deal of effort with her appearance.
I listen to DD's opinion most and often follow what they say. They buy me makeup and accessories or get me colours they say I suit. My DH was the one who called me "Care home chic" last year. I've upped my game since then. I relaxed quite a lot after leaving work.

Oh I wouldn’t like to be called smart looking like that inspires a suit and blouse in my head I tend to like more bohemian style so I guess that would NEVER be called smart 😂

The thing is - I very rarely do look smart - well, not as I would define it anyway. But it does seem to be OH's kneejerk comment if asked to express an opinion. It would be nice to occasionally be told "you look lovely" - even if it isn't strictly true!

Smart, casual and comfortable is fine for me. I make the effort every day as I like to look nice. Unlike Monica DH would notice if I dressed in a plastic bag and have plenty to say about it.

I do like to look smart when meeting up with people and going out to dinner. We went to a lovely restaurant in Bath on Saturday night and I did ask DH if I looked ok. He said you look very smart and that’s fine with me.

But that’s slightly different, Nightsky2 - most people would make more effort going to a nice restaurant in a lovely city.

Smart/classic is what I'm comfortable with. No desire whatsoever to be stylish.

I get what you're saying eddiecat - smart isn't quite the right word, it implies neat and boring!

I too would like to look stylish and gorgeous but will settle for 'presentable'

Today I've been out and about, coffee with a friend then a visit to an exhibition at the RCA and a quick whizz around Waitrose. I'm wearing everyday clothes that are at least four years old... linen trousers, linen mix jacket, t-shirt and trainers. Trousers and jacket in the sales from White Stuff & Monsoon; t-shirt is newish.

I wish I could eat soup or gravy without getting it down my front, I'll soon need a straw and bib.

I associate smart with work, which I left seven years ago. MrJ will say ‘that suits you’ or I like that on you’ my daughter ‘I like’, or ‘that colour suits you’, grandchildren ‘cool Grandma’.
All of those will do me.

If I'm at work, I have to dress in a conservative manner (my role involves time spent at Crown and Magistrates Cts).
At home...comfort all the way.

I do tend to think that instead of looking smart / stylish etc, I'd just rather just be dressed appropriately for whatever I'm doing or for the occasion!

Seems smart to me. I wear jeans/trousers, sandals/trainers, a jacket and t-shirt 24/7 except to Church and funerals. Whatever else is smart/pleasant/decent in summer? Perhaps I need to revise my definitions.
