I’m devastated due to my ruined hair

I feel so silly because I am heartbroken over my ruined hair. After 3 years I managed to grow it down to my shoulders. Then I had neck surgery and had to wear a brace/collar for 2 months which ruined the back of my hair. It was frizzy like it was back combed and tangled no matter how much conditioner I applied. Then I had a trim (new hairdresser - another mistake) which looked like a dog’s dinner so I tried thinning it out myself but still looked bad.
What do I do? I can’t bear to look at the back of my hair. I’m putting so much conditioner on it I need to wash it every 2nd day instead of twice a week. My surgery was a success and I should be very pleased it was done so quickly, but I’m worrying about my hair instead, I’m such an ungrateful woman.
Please help!

You are not going to endear yourself to other posters Padine by correcting their spelling or grammar. Rude indeed.

I think your health anxieties are being manifest in this concern about your hair. Try and relax a little and enjoy life now you are on the road to recovery.

How did you use both names? surely you must have signed in with two accounts yet you said the original account could not be used.

At one time GNHQ told us we could use an alternative name if we wanted to post something personal and didn't want to be identified or have it linked to our normal username.

However, I've tried it a couple of times and never found it possible!

Indeed sodapop. I wouldn’t dream of correcting our long-term friend Bluebelle, but will mention to Padine, as she took it upon herself to do so, that the correct spelling is ‘bona fide’.

As I was too polite to do GSM smile

I've always had unfortunate thin fine hair - always.

A few years ago, as a gift to from a family member, I went to a salon to have a different slanted blunt bob, balayage foils. All the difference in the world, hides many defects.

Perhaps a really good back slanted cut and foiled balayage?

Oh dear, I didn’t mean to be rude and stand corrected about my spelling mistake. I’m sorry for any offence I have caused and I hope you will forgive me BlueBell? I was just hurt by the criticism of my 2 usernames when it was not my fault. Anyway, it’s now sorted with the help of a lovely lady on the Gransnet team and I am a proper poster.
I haven’t looked at the back of my hair today and feeling a bit brighter!

Hair grows, get it cut ( properly) and give it time. It will be fine.

BlueBelle Tue 12-Dec-23 16:59:54

Of course I accept your apology Padine
I don’t see why you would be ‘hurt’ by my checking why you were able to use two different accounts almost at the same time
It’s just something a troll would do of course we now know you are nt a troll and was just in a muddle but I can assure you my query was neither meant to hurt or be rude
Anyway let’s draw a line under it
I really don’t know what the back of my hair looks like, as long as the front and sides all look ok in the mirror I m happy
I think you need to stop worrying, be happy your health is
improving
True warm smiling is what most people notice not a bit of back hair stop worrying and enjoy the front view 😀😂

I'm glad you're feeling a bit brighter Padine. Your hair will recover just try to be patient.

I laughed at the comment about looking at the back of your head - it was funny and reminded me of my Mum who always said she knew what I was up to because she had eyes in the back of her head.
I believed her for years.

The only answer is to stop the over-conditioning and over-washing, both of which are bad for ^ all^ your hair, and to find a good hairdresser who can sort matters out whether by just cutting or adding extensions. On no account try to cut the back of your hair yourself! In the hands of a good hairdresser it will all be sorted out.

Delila Tue 12-Dec-23 17:29:40

I laughed too at the idea of not worrying about the back of your hair. When we were teenagers one of my sisters looked gorgeous from the front, but her hair at the back was a tangled, neglected mess. I made it a mission to get a brush through it, but every time I sneaked up behind her, brush poised, she’d turn on me in absolute fury and a fight ensued! It didn’t stop me trying again many times, but I never succeeded.

Callistemon21 Tue 12-Dec-23 17:36:19

Mine's a tangled mess at the back today althought I did try to tame it this morning.
Tomorrow I'm having a cut and blow dry 🤞

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 12-Dec-23 17:41:14

I remember the days of back combing and having to check the back!

BlueBelle Tue 12-Dec-23 17:59:46

Oh gosh back combing to within an inch of its life and the beehive up high thought we looked the bees knees didn’t we

Muffintops Tue 12-Dec-23 18:07:09

Padine, I hope your recovery is progressing well. Have you tried using hair straighteners on the frizzy area?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 12-Dec-23 18:12:10

We did Bluebelle. Thank goodness fewer photos were taken then!

My DH often asks if I've brushed my hair. My response is always yes and his is that I haven't brushed the back. I can't say the same to him since he's not got much left.

Delila Tue 12-Dec-23 18:25:50

Hair is so incredibly important to us whatever age we are, and can make so much difference to how we feel about ourselves, so I hope, OP, that you’ll soon find a way to get yours back to the way you like it. There are so many ways, these days, to make your hair work for you - infinitely adaptable, it’s possible to turn a hair disaster into a triumph.

Why worry over women's hair when none seems to care men are balding, bald, or have scruffy hair, far worse to live with to me.

Callistemon21 Tue 12-Dec-23 21:53:00

One hairdresser recommended wearing a hairnet at night as it would help prevent hair getting into a frizzy mess, but I haven't tried it yet.

Tenko Tue 12-Dec-23 22:11:47

Op would an inverted bob like this work for you ?

Silk pillow cases are the answer. They really do work 😄
Buy your material and run some up, a lot cheaper than buying them.

Thanks MerylStreep
