Are jeggings really out of fashion?

I’ve been having an initial sort out of my wardrobe and I confess I’ve got at least 40 pairs of various coloured jeggings! I know, it’s disgusting but some are years old, some newer but I just don’t wear anything out!

I will wear some in winter with boots I suppose and I’m just dipping a toe into wide legs but I’m loath to just give a lot of money to charity shops. At my age, if they come back into fashion in a few years, I might be too old to wear them! Has everyone ditched all leggings and jeggings?

I’m planning to go through everything and I’ve sorted loads out for charity shops - I’ve just been very silly buying and buying more and more clothes, shoes, sandals, boots etc etc but it’s so difficult to let go.

Yes, LottieLouise, you do see a lot of ladies wearing these things who really can’t have looked in the mirror. Presumably the ‘must wear this as it’s fashionable’ brigade. I have never liked the look of leggings with dresses and imo wide leg trousers only look good on someone tall and slim. I wear jeans, slim or straight legs. Neither in nor out of ‘fashion’.

As for having 40 pairs - well, no wonder they don’t wear out! I just can’t imagine having such a vast number.

M & S are still selling their jeggings and they seem to be popular. I think they will still look good with boots and long tops/jumpers when it gets colder. I think that if fashion is a consideration, it’s about what they are worn with.

nadateturbe Thu 30-May-24 10:14:56

I am still wearing jeggings as well as straight or narrow legged jeans/trousers. Will not be wearing really wide legs. Dont like them. Wear what you like (as long as you don't wear thin see through leggings with a thong!)

Whitewavemark2 Thu 30-May-24 10:19:02

I’m not even sure what jeggings are😄. Do you jog in them?

JaneJudge Thu 30-May-24 10:21:26

petra

You’ll be lucky if you get £2.50 for a pair of second hand jeggings on Vinted.
There is soooooo much pre owned stuff around you practically have to give it away.

I sell stuff for our charity shop. I put this beautiful brand new child’s outfit on. In real life it’s a bright sunshine yellow with 2 underskirts. A saucy mare offered me £4 😡

That's beautiful petra smile

I wear jeggings for work, if they are going out of fashion I'd better buy a job lot!

they are a cross between jeans and leggings but in reality most are not denim but a softer heavyweight jersey. No zips or buttons so they are much more comfortable

Marydoll, ditto to Seasalt tunics - or else nice long - thigh length - jumpers.

What really does make me wince, is anyone not super-slim wearing jeggings or leggings with a short top. If you’ve got a big fat bottom, for goodness’ sake wear something to cover it!
And if that makes me judgemental, so be it.

karmalady Thu 30-May-24 10:24:07

I have followed wise words from Marydoll and others this morning, I didn`t want to hear them but I did at last. Realised today, reading this thread, why I have never worn my 3 pairs of summer wide-legged linen trousers

I have re-purposed them, no not into shorts but 12 good pieces of cloth, which will do nicely for pockets and trims for sewing, or just for cleaning or covering cloths. Airy enough to cover my hm sauerkraut, kimchi or kefir, while fermenting. Anyway I am going to overlock all the edges as soon as and will give them a machine wash

There are good gems and snippets from all over GN

Casdon Thu 30-May-24 10:27:38

I don’t like them, I prefer skinny jeans if I’m going to wear a tunic or long jumper, as I don’t like anything clinging to my legs showing up my lumps and bumps. My knees are not my best feature.

JaneJudge Thu 30-May-24 10:33:08

witzend, some people love big fat bottoms, fat bottomed girls they make the rocking world turn round

Granmarderby10 Thu 30-May-24 10:39:43

I have now got wide leg, flaired jeans, ankle grazers, and various jogger style and tie wasted cotton trousers - some with fabulous mandala type prints or animal prints and now jogging or just pull on trousers. They all live together happily side by side in the wardrobe.
Only thing that I can’t get along with are shorts. never found the right shape since I was aged 9🫤

Jeggings are only meant for those with the perfect figure and pair of legs for which I am not one of them.

Says who?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-May-24 10:41:36

I am not a fan of leggings/jeggings but nobody is going to get me out of my skinny jeans.

I do not give a jot whether they are in or out of fashion!!!

(I am 5’2” size 10 bottom size 12 top)

Caleo Thu 30-May-24 10:57:09

I am very old and I like to look as healthy and comfortable as I can in clothes . I have never been slim enough to look tidy in skin hugging nether garments. My present preference is warm enough sweatcloth joggers, in a pale colour as I have a white dog.
When joggers have elastic hems I can double them under at the ankle so they are the right leg length.

Theexwife Thu 30-May-24 10:59:29

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

I wear straight leg as for me it is more flattering, thin legs do not look good in jeggings, I am not sure that just because a lot of older people wear them with a tunic and sketchers makes them fashionable.

farmgran Thu 30-May-24 12:54:28

I've just bought my one n only fleecy lined leggings for the South Island winter and I love them but can't wear them in public as I have huge knees!

Skydancer Thu 30-May-24 13:48:45

I see them on other people and quite like them when worn with longish tops. But where to get the tops? I can't seem to find long tops unless they are ridiculously long or much too wide.

HousePlantQueen Thu 30-May-24 14:05:15

I generally wear jeans, but have one pair of black jeggings which (I hope) are flattering, and certainly are very comfortable with a baggy sweater in the winter. I loathe jogging bottoms, especially grey ones, wouldn't even put them on my children when they were small, as far as I am concerned tracksuits and jogging bottoms should only be worn for sport and such. Also, while I am in highly critical mood; wear leggings/jeggings if you like, but please remember that they are not trousers, and your bum needs to be covered! I nearly crashed the car a couple of weeks ago when I saw a young woman, pushing her child in a pushchair, and only wearing a jumper......then I realised that she was wearing flesh coloured leggings !

Having got that off my chest, I am off to the greenhouse. In my straight jeans

I thought of that, it made me laugh.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-May-24 16:09:37

I too hate jogging bottoms HOQ. They always look slovenly to me. I can’t imagine flesh coloured leggings. 😱

AreWeThereYet Thu 30-May-24 16:43:18

^ jeggings are fine for joggers, which was what they were intended for, but don't look right out on the street.^

I think you must be thinking of the lycra leggings used originally for yoga classes and the gym - there are a lot of them around on the streets these days, ultra stretchy, very thin and often quite see through. The M&S jeggings I wear are slightly stretchy cotton and most definitely not intended for any sort of exercise and just look like cotton trousers. In the Summer I buy regular length that are ankle length to wear with sandals. In the Winter I buy longer length to under boots and buy them a size larger so I can wear a thermal legging under them.

AreWeThereYet Thu 30-May-24 16:45:02

And I don't care if they are fashionable or not - they are comfy, come in loads of colours, can be worn with all sorts of tops and can look casual or smart as required.

Marydoll Thu 30-May-24 20:42:41

Confined to barracks, I have been passing the time watching Milan Street Style videos on You Tube.

Lots of older ladies wearing narrow legged cropped trousers, looking extremely elegant.
Hardly any baggy, wide legged trousers to be seen. wink

Jaxjacky Thu 30-May-24 20:56:20

I don’t wear jeggngs as I prefer a front zip (fly) and pockets, I do wear wide legged linen trousers on occasion, I’m 5’11 and a size 14/16.

Norah Fri 31-May-24 12:07:16

Theexwife jeggings, I am not sure that just because a lot of older people wear them with a tunic and sketchers makes them fashionable.

Correct.
