Skirty Shorts??? Or Do I Mean Skorts???

Just wondering if anyone knows where I can buy some shorts that, when being worn, look like a skirt. I don’t want anything that’s tight fitting. They’re for a couple of trips to warmer climes - Singapore, Hong Kong & Thailand. Therefore I’m looking for something that is loose and will keep me cool!

I suppose I might mean skorts, but seem to have the impression these would be tighter than I was looking for.

Maybe you mean culottes?

Just googled and lots to look at.
Some are even called ‘skorts’

I have no idea what they are called these days but we used to call them divided skirts!

My granddaughter calls them skorts. I believe M&S sell them.

As I write, I am wearing a pair of what I assume are ‘skorts’.

They were from Regatta, much reduced in the sale ((£45 down to about £13 I think), style ‘’Sabela’.

They would be fine for holidays where it is warm, but I only wear them in the garden at home as they are too short to go out in, (in my opinion).

If I were 18 and a size 8/10 I would go down town in them though.

I recall that years ago M & S tried to pioneer something that was an A line skirt with trousers combined. It looked quite frumpy and uncomfortable.

Never caught on.

I went to a Catholic boarding school and a divided skirt was our "shorts". We had to kneel and if a lot of material was on the floor, they were deemed wearable but if the material was above the knee they could not be worn.

That’s what we used to wear at school for sports. Mine were grey.

Plenty of varieties of skorts on amazon…even knee length ones…often used by golfers so lots of colours and styles not just in polyester.

I bet you nuns ran the school! My school was the same. They were navy serge and hellish to iron.

Many shops sell them. It all depends whether you want a sporty skort or a formal skort. Some are very short and others more culotte like. I think you'd just need to google around til you find one your style.

My daughter has some but I believe she bought them from Holister..?

Next have some if you look online.

Thanks for your comments. I’ll have a look at some of the suggestions.

remember that socks must cover the ankle.
the ones that sit level with the shoes are very old hat.
i heard this on women's hour recently, and rejoiced that i was ahead of the curve, having always worn tube socks.
they've obviously noticed and cottoned on.
imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Perhaps take a look at Tennis or golf skirts. I wear tennis skirts in hot weather in my garden or out on walks, and obviously, playing tennis or golf.

Lomo123 Sun 18-Aug-24 17:39:16

Primark had them at their reduced section. Light colours.

My daughter bought hers from Apricot. Looks like they stock a selection.

Marydoll there were only a couple of lay teachers, the rest were nuns. It is no longer a convent I suppose because many were no longer joining.

They did a good job with me- religion was stuffed down my throat I only go to a church now for weddings and funerals.

When my mother was alive she was appalled but I was too old to be dragged there during the hoildays.

Snap! Heavy grey woollen culottes - kept you warm while playing the dreaded lacrosse but too warm playing tennis.

Maybe you could find some "modesty pants". Sort of cotton jersey leggings which stop above the knee, to wear under a skirt. Then you could change them more frequently, as in this hot weather they will get sweaty but the skirt part wouldn't.

When I first came to Germany in the 70s it was quite usual for girls to wear a "Hosenrock" - a split skirt. Literally "Trouser skirt". I couldn't see the point in them because you would have to take them down to go to the loo. I suppose if I had been getting about more by bike I would have seen a use for them as we weren't allowed to wear trousers to the office in those days.

Skorts

sandelf Mon 19-Aug-24 11:52:45

Google long skort - might be something useful there.

mabon1 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:02:56

What a stupid word.
