I would appreciate any recommendations please, for petite fitting (5ft. 0ins.) mother of the groom/bride outfits. I struggled to find anything suitable when our daughter got married (my dress was more or less re-made!!) and I’m having the same problem again as mother of the groom. I would love to be able to buy an outfit without having to undergo major alterations!

Why not get one made from scratch by a dressmaker. It’ll be just the style and colour you want with no messy alterations.

I am the same height as you. There are plenty of petite women’s outfits Roman, M & S, new look etc etc and I remember another alled Minuet I think.
Look online for petit women’s clothing. Lots of choice .
Hope you have a lovely day,

There are currently 438 petite dresses online at John Lewis, many suitable for special occasions.

Perhaps wear your MOB outfit with new shoes and hat?

I consider my Church dresses suitable for all occasions.

Have you tried Hobbs petite? They are usually pretty good at occasion wear.

Nigel Rayment caters for petite women .

Never heard of Nigel Rayment so just looked at their website. Their dresses are beautiful.

Same here. Pricy though even the sale prices. I wouldn’t pay that much even for Mother of the groom.

I’m the same height and got mine from Phase Eight. I’d recommend checking John Lewis they also do a personal shopper service.

It would help a teeny weeny bit if you gave some info on what you like/don’t like.
Sleeves/ no sleeves.
Fitted/ flared
Length.
Pattern / plain.
What colours do you like.
But!!!
Start with the shoes. As in they must have style and comfort.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - I just need some brand ideas to save me time searching around. I’ve tried the Manchester John Lewis store before, but they didn’t have any petite outfits. Maybe they’re just available online.
I definitely want my arms covered and attention taken away from my bustline and stomach. I like the idea of a dress with a longline jacket on top to add an illusion of height. I’d like lace if possible. Colours - blue, turquoise, mint, coral, peach. No large patterns because of my height. I can’t really buy shoes until I know the colour of the dress. It seems as though petites are mainly available online, so no possibility of trying on in store. Our local M&S is a joke if you are looking for petites, apart from trousers!

Next Online , they have some lovely dresses in petite

TiggyW Mon 31-Mar-25 21:01:56

Thanks, Debbi58. I’ve tried Next, but by the time I’ve added all my filters, especially colours and long sleeves, there was nothing suitable. 😕 There are lots of short sleeved dresses, which I don’t want because I’d like my arms covered. Still looking!

Do you have a local independent shop selling nice clothes tiggy? If so it’s worth going in for a chat, they can often order items to suit. It’s worked for me in the past Thinking John Lewis does your closest store have a personal shopper availability? Might be worth letting them do the searching, you can also try styles you’d not thought about. Hope it all works out for you.

Look on the Gina Bacconi website …..

Get the petite dresses delivered to store as ‘click and collect’ and try them on there. If they are no good just return them in store. John Lewis is ideal for that.
Try Phase Eight Petite and Monsoon

When DD was getting married I found my outfit in John Lewis. The personal shopper was very good and picked out outfits I wouldn't have considered if left to myself but the dress and jacket I eventually bought was absolutely perfect. I am also petite although slightly taller than you.

I would not recommend Roman, the outfit I bought was nothing like advertised and when I returned it I was fobbed off for weeks with the supposed refund in progress. Then 3 months later they said I'd returned it too late,(untrue) and they had returned the dress to me 3 weeks ago. I never got the horrible dress or the refund.
My friend has just told me of her similar experience.
John Lewis and Hobbs have provided me with excellent service for petite outfits.

Bixiboo Tue 01-Apr-25 17:40:14

Just had an email from Hobbs to say they have 15% off all dresses.

Try Aubergine in Pemberton, Wigan. That’s where I got my MOG dress from. Pricey but so worth it

Flanet Tue 01-Apr-25 21:13:50

Another recommendation for Hobbs petite. You can dress up the outfit with a jacket or shrug as well.

I am under 5 ft as well and have a lovely Lady who does alterations. If you prefer not to do this then I recommend a nice jacket with three quarter sleeves, a short sleeve top and a pretty flowing skirt ( I tend to wear my skirts quite long) or a dress with short sleeves under the jacket. Happy hunting!

When I got married I had my shoes dyed to match my dress which was not white, cream or pastel. Dark red they were absolutely beautiful.

Tiggy W,

I'm under 5ft tall and found a whole load of choice in John Lewis in Cardiff (2019) for my MoB outfit.

I booked a personal shopper experience (no charge) took a friend and leaned in. I tried on loads of things I wouldn't normally have tried and came away with a Phase Eight dress for the wedding and another dress from Fenn Wright & Manson which wasn't a 'petite' but was so lovely I had to have it. It wasn't MoB but I've worn it to two friends weddings since.

They paired the MoB dress with a bolero jacket from a different brand which was the perfect match. Facinator and clutch were also purchased at the same time. No alterations were necessary for either dress.

I'd recommend it as I would not necessarily have looked at the brands they chose for me or looked to mix and match different brands. There is no commitment to buy.

Thank you so much for all your recommendations. I’m still looking. Went to Boundary Mill yesterday - they have one petite section, Roman. Even their dresses hung off my shoulders! 🙄 I’m currently ordering from John Lewis online, but it’s a rather plain dress. Perhaps I can dress it up. I might have to try their store at the Trafford Centre if this doesn’t fit. The problem lies with the back length from neck to waist. It means altering the armholes, neckline and zip. I bought a Gina Bacconi dress in the hope that it could be altered, but the dressmaker advised against it. I can’t return it because it was from an agency - sold as seen. 😕 Anyone want a size 16 pale pink MOB/MOG dress?! 🤣 If I didn’t laugh I would cry…
