Hi
I am looking for advice please,
I have not been to well recently, and have lost my way with my skin care / makeup.
I have mature skin wrinkles pigmentation and very dull and pale looking, I would like a routine and also do facials at home, but on a budget.
Any skin care facials or make up advice you can give me is appreciated.
Many thanks

Hey,

I follow a beauty routine that is split into 3 times a day. I only use natural shea butter or sometimes pure coconut oil. 1. Morning routine where I apply shea body butter - www.avielaskincare.com/products/shea-body-butter on my face, neck and body after a shower and since the skin is supple, the shea butter gets absorbed into my skin. 2. I apply shea butter one more time, especially on my hands, as the hands can become pretty dry with house work and using the laptop throughout the day. 3. Before going to bed, I apply shea foot butter, and pure shea butter on my face. I apply she abutter at night, as I have seen that my skin can become pretty dry at night and in the morning can be rough if I do not apply shea butter.

I only use water on my face then I use simple cleanser. Very little make up,and my moisturizer is Astral intensive moisturizer. At 72 I'm not wrinkle free, but people always think I'm about 65....maybe they need to go to Specsavers grin

I use dr jart. I cleanse & tone, then apply sun cream for the face, apply dr jart green, colour correction cream (will adapt to your own skin tone. Apply a little bronzer, Lippy & mascara. They do face wash & face masks.
Also tropics is very good too.

So many of these sound like very hard work and a lot of expense.

I wash my face in the shower, or use a cheap foam cleanser with a flannel if I can be bothered. If I'm going out I use Boots Moisturiser and a smile.

Life is just too short for all this...

I’m no beauty expert but can recommend Aveeno moisturisers. I had been using Nivea and Nivea Soft but seem to have developed a mild allergy to them (I have that sort of skin) so changed recently and my skin does look better. I also use their cleanser.

I know exactly how you feel—I went through something similar when my skin lost its glow, and I felt like I’d forgotten how to take care of myself. What really helped me was going back to basics. I started using tretinoin (slowly, just a few nights a week at first), and it made such a difference for my wrinkles, pigmentation, and overall dullness. It takes time, but with sunscreen every morning, it really pays off.

On a budget, I did simple home facials—steaming my face, then using a honey and yogurt mask, finishing with a light moisturizer. It felt like a treat without costing much. For makeup, I switched to cream products—a hydrating foundation, a touch of cream blush, and tinted lip balm brought life back to my face.

I also found encouragement from communities like Modafinia and advice on Dermacarehub. Little steps really do bring back the glow.

I personally use retinol (Retin-A) and sunscreen and also moisturizer. it helped my skin a lot. I got to know from my cousin from india and i was not getting the same product here in UK so i researched a lot and found a reddit post in which there was a site mention (dermacarehub) for UK so i purchased the retin-A it was the same product my cousin showed me which i was not getting easily.

Vaseline at night on your eyelashes is supposed to improve them, I keep meaning to try it.
A weekly facepack is good too.

I'd just add that I also use an eyelash primer, which is lighter than a mascara, for some definition.
I apply a small amount of light powder blusher to my cheekbones, with a brush, because it glides on more easily than applying a cream one or some bronzer with my fingertips. If you've got uneven skin tone, a powder one works better I think. You can really blend it well with a brush. I've always used brushes for very small amounts of blusher, eyeshadow, lipstick and eyeliner, to blend well and soften. To start with, a blusher brush might be more useful. It might be helpful to ask for advice on the right colours for blusher etc. from someone working at a makeup counter.
I like to use a little vaseline on my lips and I use lipstick sparingly, more as a lipstain, unless I'm out for the evening.
If you're looking for a good, inexpensive, paraben-free sunscreen, I recommend Altruist, which is created by dermatologists.
I don't have much else on my bathroom shelf or in my make-up bag other than the things I've mentioned. I think the key things are to cleanse well, tone, moisturize and protect your skin and to even out skintone; then add a small touch of brightness and definition to your face. I hope this helps, juniel and that you feel you've got some good ideas to start with.

I second Ponds cold cream. I use it daily and it even removes my waterproof mascara. My daughter brings me large tubs from America unavailable here. She has got me into exfoliating too.
I also use a lot of Vaseline. Recommended for skin care generally by a burns surgeon. Over the years used it to remove stage makeup. Left my skin in good nick.

teabagwoman this is the one I use on my face, earlobes, neck and throat. (Anything that's exposed basically).

A few years ago I had a "suspicious" patch on my nose, from sunburn when I was 16.
I had a four week course of Efudix chemotherapy cream, after which the dermatologist said I had to promise him I'd use factor 50 every day from now on. So I do.

That’s good to know. Now I have to find a sunscreen for my face that doesn’t make me sore. I’ve tried children’s ones with no luck. Does anybody have a suggestion?

lizzypopbottle Fri 23-May-25 14:30:05

teabagwoman Yes, Aveeno! If you get to the point where your skin doesn't fit you any more i.e. it's crepey (I notice this particularly on my arms) then I can recommend Aveeno Dry Skin Relief. It really makes a difference. Obviously, it's a temporary effect but it really improves the appearance of my arms. I'd completely stopped wearing short sleeves but I'm back wearing them now!

Whilst this thread is going strong could someone explain serums too please? I use a vit c one with hyuloronic acid but not certain it’s what I need?

Allsorts Fri 23-May-25 07:18:27

However I remove my make up, only wear it when I go out I always splash my face with cold water, then in the morning just cold water again. Always moisturise with spf in it then a sunscreen by Boots no 7 each day, then moisturise at night.
I am going to try to get some Ponds Cold Cream I thought they had stopped making it.

I wash my face in the morning with warm water and a tiny dash of baby shampoo no tears so safely cleansing my eye area too . Aveeno moisture gel cream got when on offer in Boots is great night and morning . Use Lavera cleansing 2 in 1 milk at night then wipe off with water and I love to use just ordinary rose water ( nothing else in ) from the local deli shop on a cotton pad as a toner and even I am not allergic it’s also only about £1.70 a bottle no need for stuff that costs a bomb and full of many additives - not recommending anything just saying what I get on with . My skin sensitive and get psoriasis and had rosacea for many years with freckles so good sun cream always . .

Check out Victoria Health website. Range of excellent products usually not available elsewhere.

AskAlice Thu 22-May-25 18:57:04

I've also heard that Aldi products are very good.

AskAlice Thu 22-May-25 18:55:55

I always use a wash-off cleanser on my face in the shower, I just don't feel "clean" otherwise! I've used Clinique Liquid Facial cleanser for years, but am in the process of changing over to Simple as I don't want to buy American products anymore. I can't recommend this moisturiser enough, and it's often on offer at half price in Sainsbury's, Boots etc. www.boots.com/simple-protect-n-glow-triple-protection-spf-30-moisturiser-for-glowing-skin-non-chalky-vitamin-c-face-cream-40ml-10271981 And this serum really made a difference for me - I've recommended it on here before and I know that a couple of GNs have also been very pleased with it: www.simple.co.uk/p/protect-n-glow-radiance-booster-spf-30.html/08717163866870

Good luck with whatever regime you choose!

Kathmaggie Thu 22-May-25 18:50:46

You really don’t have to go expensive. Over the years I have used supermarket cleansers and moisturisers as that was all I could afford. The point is do it every day - cleanse and moisturise. Protect from the sun - so important. I now use Aldi products - amazing quality for the price. Tinted moisturisers from Superdrug - have fun experimenting!
