Need a beauty routine

I’m no beauty expert but can recommend Aveeno moisturisers. I had been using Nivea and Nivea Soft but seem to have developed a mild allergy to them (I have that sort of skin) so changed recently and my skin does look better. I also use their cleanser.

I think the answer is to be regular and focused in what you do.
Never go to bed without cleansing and moisturising.
I just use facial wipes which is quick and easy.
I use whatever is on offer from Sainsbury’s with my weekly delivery or Amazon.
It doesn’t have to be expensive.
Repeat in the morning and use a moisturiser with an Sp of at least 15.
Keep out of the sun, the wrinkles love it.

Just persist with it and I hope you see an improvement in days rather than weeks.

I stick to the same fairly cheap routine. Morning, splash face with cold water. Apply Nivea soft moisturiser. Add an Olay tinted moisturiser. Bit of blusher. Bit of FabBrows for definition. At night, micellar water cleanser, apricot facial scrub in shower, nivea again for bed. It all seems to keep me looking healthy (if not exactly young!). Xx

After I hit 60, I decided to review a lot of skin care / make up items I was using...both due to my budget and changes in myself (also health reasons).

I use a cream cleanser (Simple smoothing gel) and a PHA toner, I then apply a Nivea moisturiser with a high SPF i.e 30. Same routine morning and night.
Make-up, very little day to day...a brown eye pencil (as liner) and brown mascara, blusher and clear lip balm. If I'm going out - I'll them use a BB cream as foundation.
The only items that I've spent a little more on are the BB cream (Erborian) and Eye pencil(Urban Decay).

Other parts of my 'routine' are a hair treatment once a week..I'll pop that on and wrap my hair in a towel for an hour or so and I'll also use a face mask at the same time...generally just a cheapie!

I recommend Eucerin moisturiser to help even out your skin tone. I prefer to use concealer for small areas of my face, rather than foundation.
I also recommend investing in a couple of good make-up brushes, or perhaps just a blusher one to start with, to help with blending a small amount of colour onto your cheekbones.
You could get your eyebrows tidied and tinted to give your eyes definition, or else use an eyebrow brush and pencil. An eye liner in a soft colour, rather than black) would also give your eyes definition. I like the Bobbi Brown range.

Always use primer before foundation - Bobbi Brown

Tinted moisturiser only for day time -Bobbi Brown or Charlotte Tilbury

Foundation with serum for evening/events etc - Bobbi Brown.

junie, I would like to add another bid for blusher.
Unless you have red in your complexion, you will look much better with a little pink on the cheeks.

Make spf on your face a priority .
At least 30% preferable 50% .

I tried many cleansers as a teenager but was sensitive to all of them resulting in sore itchy skin.
I decided to use just a wet warm flannel, no soap. If I'm wearing makeup, which is rare, I use Simple brand cleanser. Never used moisturiser and only occasionally use a little soap to wash. All my makeup is hypoallergenic too. My skin is good for my age 70s

I don't wear make up often, and usually just wipe my face gently with wet cotton pads before applying a moisturiser at night, using the same brand in the morning which has sunscreen in to. I usually use a La Roche-Posay product as I have sensitive skin and I find that it suits me and isn't too expensive. I've tried going down the cleanse/tone/serum/moisturiser route but find that it mucks up my natural skin barrier and makes my skin even drier.
I only wear make-up on special occasions, using just concealer where necessary rather than foundation as Steelygran suggests. I use "tube mascara" from Clinique or Boots, this stays on well and can be removed with just water so you don't need to use harsh cleansers on the fragile skin around your eye area. I use a natural coloured lipstick which makes a surprising difference, and sometimes a little soft coloured eye shadow.

At night I cleanse my face with micellar water and cotton wool then I apply a night time moisturizer from Aldi, I use their Caviar range. In the morning I wash my face with Nip Fab Glycolic cleanser and water then apply daytime moisturizer from Aldi’s Caviar range. A couple of times a week I exfoliate my face with a honey and almond facial scrub and once a week I apply a face pack, usually one from Primark, they have a big choice.

I’ve got a tinted moisturiser and am surprised at the difference it makes. Sometimes I just put a bit where my cheekbones are (or rather where they should be!) and I do think I look brighter and healthier. It’s not much to do really to make a difference.

Someone mentioned make-up brushes but I haven’t a clue how to use them or even what they’re for. I see them being used by the candidates on The Apprentice but have no idea what they’re doing or why.

Don't use facial wipes or cotton wool with your cleanser. Buy reusable sponges - Boots sell 2 in a pack in their Botanics range. Use one with a cream cleanser. The sponge is slightly coarser than wool or wipes so it will gently exfoliate your skin. Just wash it and use it again. Use a gentle toner to remove your cleanser or rinse your face with water. Use a Vitamin C serum for morning and a night serum for evenings. Then appy day or night cream. Always apply a few dots of eye cream morning and evening. You will soon notice a big improvement in your complexion. Treat yourself to a facial every 8 weeks.

I only use make up brushes when I am doing a party face. I have my brushes laid out and items for my face numbered. I have a list of items in the right order.

I find that putting concealer on is much better with the correct small brush and finishing power with the correct large brush. and if using a solid blusher then again with the correct brush.

A friend and I were chatting about this and were both disappointed with modern day cleansers for removing waerproof make up. We reminisced about Ponds Cold Cream. I looked it up and found it on Amazon! Bought 3 pots, gave one to my pal and we were blown away by the improvement in our complexions within a couple of days.
Otherwise, always cleanse, always use a serum, always follow with a moisturiser night and day, no slacking! Not boasting but I'm 78 and consistently careful skincare has helped me to lose 10 years.

I cleanse with micellar water . I use a serum ,followed byc moisturiser . Again at night Exfoliate once a week . If you have the Boots app , they do £10 Tuesday and there's usually a good choice of skincare products on offer ... Nivea , No7, loreal etc . I stock up regularly and it saves a small fortune as some of these products are pricey . You also get reward points too .
Make up wise I'm a fan of no7 , they do a good range of foundations for older skin . I don't use makeup every day now I'm retired but foundation , blusher, eyeliner and eyebrows plus lipstick in natural colours are my go to .

You really don’t have to go expensive. Over the years I have used supermarket cleansers and moisturisers as that was all I could afford. The point is do it every day - cleanse and moisturise. Protect from the sun - so important. I now use Aldi products - amazing quality for the price. Tinted moisturisers from Superdrug - have fun experimenting!

I always use a wash-off cleanser on my face in the shower, I just don't feel "clean" otherwise! I've used Clinique Liquid Facial cleanser for years, but am in the process of changing over to Simple as I don't want to buy American products anymore.
