Returning an on-line purchase - any advice please.

Any ideas for a quick solution to this situation? I unwisely bought a dress which I saw on-line and which looked really good. I checked that the company had a proper web-site and they did so I ordered it. The company is Milford Manchester and they claim to be 'Trusted by Thousands Across the UK' The dress was only 29.95 (reduced from £60) so I wasn't expecting much, but when it arrived, although it did fit it was not suitable for me to wear being 95% Polyester and 5% Spandex. It was described on the website as being made from 'Breathable Fabric: Lightweight material for all-day comfort'. As I only really wear natural fibres wearing this would be like wearing a plastic bag. I got in touch to ask to return it as the website said
'100% Happiness Guarantee
Try them on at home. If they’re not quite right, return them within 14 days for a full refund — no questions asked.'
However, having had several email exchanges with the company I am now told that I can order something else instead and keep the original dress but they will raise an invoice for £9.95 which will give me another dress but save me spending £25 to send the dress back to China! I am not inclined to order anything else as I don't trust the descriptions on their website. They have offered to refund 10% of my original payment (and I still keep the dress which I don't want)
I am not bothered about losing my money (my mistake to order something which I should have guessed would be dodgy) but I think they have misrepresented the situation on their website. I haven't got time to argue the case with the company as we go on holiday very shortly and OH is going for planned surgery when we return

They’ve evidently completely misrepresented their Ts and Cs in the advertisement.
Presumably you could report them for this to the Advertising Standards Agency? I think I’d tell them that I was going to do this, given their completely misleading information, and see whether that achieves anything!

TBH this is why I order online only from a very few companies where I know any returns will be easy.

Keep pushing and insist you want to return the dress at their expense. I've had this happen over a pair of shoes and eventually they refunded me and told me to keep the shoes.

One of the reasons why I will not buy clothes online! I am sorry to hear that this has happened to you OP but my suggestion would be to sell the dress on as there’s no guarantee that one of their garments will be suitable for you. I too prefer to wear breathable fabrics and lean ore toward cotton, linen, etc

In my experience there is no point in returning anything to China as it never gets there. But please leave an honest review so at least we can help others avoid the same situation.
I recently left a 1 star review for some bedding, which also turned out to have come from China. I am now receiving phone calls every other day, trying to get me to take my review down in return for various free items, though why they think I would want anything else from them beats me. That just shows how dishonest some of these sellers are.
Good luck.

How did you pay? Paypal should give you your money back and perhaps your bank if you used a debit card. Try opening a dispute with them.

I never seem to learn my lesson about ordering things online. A lot of Chinese companies seem to use UK addresses. I have to keep reminding myself to check the reviews on Trustpilot before I buy anything and then forget to do so.

JenniferEccles Wed 23-Jul-25 10:19:43

I’m afraid this is a scam.
A quick google search came up with terrible reviews with people all saying the same as you. There is no free returns policy and if pushed the only ‘refund’ is 5 or 10% of the purchase price.

These awful Chinese companies seem to be mushrooming unfortunately.
Far better to stick to familiar well known brands.

I know some GNs warn that Trustpilot is dodgy and it may be true that some 5* reviews are not genuine but if you check before buying from a site you have not used before, nine times out of ten, a slew of one star reviews pops up often including mentions of bad quality, not as it appeared online and the difficulty of returning stuff to China.

singingnutty Wed 23-Jul-25 10:25:50

It was not clear that the dress would come from China, and I didn't think to check reviews. Oh dear!

Sparklefizz Wed 23-Jul-25 10:27:36

SingingNutty I got caught by that company. With the cost of a return to China and a payment for Chinese tax, it will cost me more than the dress cost in order to return it. I only ordered because the company had a Manchester address. I did a number of checks but still got caught.

Lesson learnt.

Magenta8 Wed 23-Jul-25 11:09:25

I've been caught too so have numerous other GNs.

This company are well known for the quality of their clothes and poor returns system. If it looks cheap it’s probably from China. I’ve been caught before by another company supposedly based in the UK.

Another vote for Trustpilot.

No need to mock. We all make mistakes, except you, apparently.

I too was caught by one of these false companies, claiming to be based in London. I too had the "order something else instead and keep the original dress but they will raise an invoice for £9.95 which will give me another dress but save me spending £25 to send the dress back to China! " palaver. Ended up after much hassle and heartbreak (£30 is a lot for someone on State Pension) decided to give up as the credit card I had used were not being very helpful. I also have AADHD which makes everything such a struggle. It's outrageous they can get away with this so often. I have friends who have been had too!

Sell it on Vinted then buy something else with the money you make?

petra Wed 23-Jul-25 13:37:05

A 10 second search brought this up. This is just one site.

Why did a group of us spend 2 years researching/ posting evidence on FB being warned by FB several times that we would be banned. And we were.
It was all for nothing, wasn’t it 🤷‍♀️
There are no excuses now as to why people get scammed. There are numerous sites where you can check the legitimacy of a company.

Humbertbear Wed 23-Jul-25 14:22:54

I have been caught in the past but Paypal refunded me the money. I always pay with Paypal.

singingnutty Wed 23-Jul-25 14:48:14

When I commented 'Oh dear' I was not mocking - more kicking myself for being naive. And I am pleased to know now that there are sites where I can check on the legitimacy of on-line sales. But I think commenting There are no excuses now as to why people get scammed. There are numerous sites where you can check the legitimacy of a company is a bit of a slap on the wrist that is uncalled for.

I’ve been stung at least three times. One was with a company that set up a website almost identical to a reputable one. Shoes that looked great in a video ( and having mutant feet I always said I would never buy shoes that I couldn’t try on). I did buy some chair covers from what looked like a uk company but then realised they were coming from China and delivery took forever. Thankfully they eventually arrived and were just what I wanted and I am going to buy more. The videos these companies put on Facebook are so professional. I’ve contacted Facebook in the past to tell them they are rogue companies but they aren’t interested.

I give no apology for my remark. I can’t begin to tell you how many hundreds of hours we all spent gathering info to present to FB to get these sites banned.
At that time there were no sites where you could go to check how good/ bad a site was. That’s where we spent hours tracking down who exactly they were.
At one time we had a list of 260 Chinese companies all owned by one man.
Disgruntled customers would sent us photos of rubbish they had received. We posted these on FB.
I think it might have been a financial comment I made about Mr Zuckerbergs wife that put the tin hat on the warnings.

But I'm on facebook all the time[[until I got locked out of my ipad account that is] and have never seen a facebook site that I can go to to check if a company is ok. I do try to check on companies I use but, as I said earlier I still get caught out. If these companies weren't so clever they wouldn't exist. I don't think that those of us that have been caught out by rogue companies are somehow lacking in the brain department...

BlueBelle Wed 23-Jul-25 17:38:44

Always check the reviews
I will not buy off any of the known Chinese companies because of the dreadful treatment of the workers however I do buy online but never without looking at the reviews first
That is my guide always and I ve never had this trouble
Leave it for now and put it down to experience but never buy off any new place without checking it out first
