What footwear with wide leg cropped trousers?

I have a really nice pair of wide leg cropped trousers, sort of jeans style but in a nice darkish khaki. I bought them towards the end of the summer and felt really stylish wearing them with sandals. Now it's colder weather I don't know what to wear with them - for preference I'd like to wear them with boots of some sort, but I can't decide if it looks right or not. It just looks as if my trousers aren't long enough, when I look in the mirror! When I look online people seem to wear loafers or trainers, but no socks...but I like to keep my feet warm. What do you all do?

I don't wear cropped trousers in winter! I like them with bare legs and sandals. Sorry they look silly in winter to me,just like your trousers have shrunk in the wash

I bought a pair. They looked fine with black tights and loafers. But my top half was a problem because I'm a busty lady and I think wide trousers need a fitted top. So I took the wide crops back.

Try boots with a neat ankle and a kitten heel. I think they are called sock boots. As long as the tops don’t show they should look smart. I also like the idea of thick tights and flats as mentioned earlier.

I'm just now watching Sophie Rayworth presenting the news wearing a very smart pair of wide-legged cropped trousers. She has on high heeled court type shoes and looks amazing.

But most of us are moving around not reading the news! Nanny .
Comfort is everything in my humble opinion.

My daughter in law wears these cropped trousers and they suit her as slim and quite tall as- moi? No I think unless it’s summer - I did wear some that are 15 yrs old this summer - the style seems to have returned as no doubt jeggings will . They are a job to get over my swollen ankle bone so I dread trying to get them off !

Sorry. hmm. Just needed to mention it.

I think the trick with boots is to have a narrow ankle and no gap between trouser and boot.

these are flat, a bit chunky, but have a narrow ankle.

these are higher, so you can also wear them with skirts

I’ve never worn cropped trousers, but to me, they are summer trousers, which is why sandals are fine to wear with them. They’re going to look odd with bare legs if worn in the winter, but also with high boots. They’re not as smart as culottes, so not going to look right with smart footwear. Just a personal opinion.

I have always thought that wide leg cropped trousers can look very clownish when worn by most people. Perhaps a tall slim young woman with trainers can get away with it but others definitely not!

Summer wear with sandals is ok but for winter definitely no!

Why not wear them on a shopping trip and try different styles to see what suits you? I wear cropped trousers with trainers, sandals and boots but I choose trousers that are not too wide for my frame and team them with a neat shortish top. It's about getting the balance right. I'm not particularly tall but most of my height is in my legs which are long and slim. If I wear really chunky footwear I look like Minnie mouse but I find I need some chunkiness to balance out the trousers. IMO Most of us can wear anything if we get the balance right.

I am with Spinnaker, as I am five foot six. Problems with my back and sometimes knees, means that for me crops from Seasalter are a full length. They are linen, and comfortable to wear. In summer, just underwear and sandals. Now I appear to be oblivious to the cold.Ah ha! My trick is to wear my polar longjohns underneath, add matching socks and ankle length boots and I feel comfortable, warm and unencumbered going round town
So long as I am clean and tidy, I really don't care what is fashionable, nor how other people view me. Try going for the comfortable look and ignore the poor souls looking up to date but frozen! Sometimes I fish a very old outfit that I can still wear, if I notice something has come back into fashion.

Well, thank you everyone for all those ideas - I see the jury is out! In answer to some questions, the trousers aren't very cropped on me, sort of lower calf I'd say. I have long boots that would fill the gap okay, so will try those, but I also take the point that a few have made which is to drop the whole idea. I do have longer trousers...

This may help.

Look like!

GrannyGravy13 Fri 07-Nov-25 15:33:33

muckandnettles I would go for long boots with a heel, so no gap.

You will look very stylish 👍

Winter cropped trousers need thick knee socks or tights, plus a chunky shoe. Think Mary Jane DMs or boots. Be bold .

muckandnettles Fri 07-Nov-25 16:29:56

Thanks for the encouragement and ideas, I appreciate all your ideas. I will try and 'be bold' @JamesandJon33!

I’ve just had a trying on session with various footwear. The best option so far is pair of black chunky Timberland lace-up boots. I shall try them soon!

Having looked at all the ideas and pics online of what to wear with wide leg crop trousers have to say they all look awful like the circus is in town.

Casdon Fri 07-Nov-25 20:37:22

You might be on the slippery slope to beige anoraks Oreo, watch out.

Oreo Fri 07-Nov-25 20:40:44

Hardly!
There’s a vast difference between looking like a little old lady and wearing trendy gear that just doesn’t suit you.I think only a wildly attractive slim tall 18 year old could get away with going out and about in wide leg crops, thick socks and chunky footwear.

Channel your inner Shetland. DI Calder looks pretty good in her wee trews.
