I’m looking for something to do at home which will reduce the yellowing on my aging teeth. I do go to the dentist regularly but the cost for cleaning is over £100 and they don’t do it on the NHS.
I was wondering if anyone had a success with a product I could buy which may help.
Just for information I use an electronic toothbrush have done for years. My daily routine is to use the tiny brushes each morning then brush with the electric toothbrush in the evening I floss and again use the electric toothbrush. Dentist twice a year for check up.
My grandson asked me a few months ago why I had yellow teeth., if he noticed they must look bad.
Any ideas ladies.

I don't think cleaning at the dentists does much about yellowing, I think it is more about removing the tartar.

You can get tooth whitening at the dentists but I think it is more expensive. I'm not convinced the fancy tooth pastes do much if anything.

I had a whitening treatment via my dentist.
I think it was about £450 pounds.
I had the custom trays made and was given the Boutique whitening treatment, it is only available through your dentist.
I use the whitening toothpastes to maintain my teeth, they will not work on badly stained teeth.

Give a go at Purple toothpaste, cheap option to start with. I use it about once a week and I noticed the difference. It's not "Turkey Teeth" white but a hopefully you will notice them a bit brighter, and won't break the bank.

Yes, it's expensive although I don't think mine cost that much but it was a while ago. It's not that pleasant to do and if you carry on for too long, can make your teeth sensitive but that sensation disappears after a while.

They need doing again and I'm wondering if the product goes off because I have some I never used.

It could be hereditary too. My DM's teeth were lovely, sparkling white but she did lose them at a fairly early age. My DF's were more yellow but he still had his when he died in his mid-eighties. Perhaps they are stronger 🤞

I’m only 67 and my teeth are certainly not pearly white any more, however I have no dentures as yet, visit the dentist regularly and use an electric toothbrush. I’ve simply accepted that as I age, so will my teeth.

Eucryl tooth powder, it's similar to Vim but tastes better (l assume, having not tasted Vim). They say only to use it twice a week but l used to use it daily for years with no ill effect.

I don't think any amount of cleaning will whiten naturally yellow teeth; if it did they'd be sparkling white every time you went to the hygienist. She/he cleans them after the torture procedures with a special powder.

Maremia Thu 19-Feb-26 15:13:01

Are those Hygienists specially trained in their torture methods?

😂
We had the same one for years, she was very jolly and seemed to love her job.
Now a new one who seemed very thorough.

I say no more.

One of the expensive whitening toothpastes made my mouth really sore and caused ulcers. I had considered dentist-approved tooth whitening treatment but my hygienist warned that it can make sensitive teeth ultra sensitive.

If it's not staining then the enamel has likely worn down which causes the teeth to look more yellow. No cleaning will fix that.

Very true.

Yes, me too.

I have to be careful what toothpaste I use.

Try bicarb of soda on your tooothbrush. Cheap and cheerful.

Doodledog Thu 19-Feb-26 21:31:57

Scrub with bicarbonate, then rinse well and use a peroxide mouthwash and rinse well again. Do this once a week and you will notice the difference.

Your diet plays a significant role in the color of your teeth. Foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and certain fruits can stain your teeth over time. It's not just hearsay; it's a well-documented fact in dental literature.

I've found MySweetSmile tooth powder (available online) is good for a gentle brightening effect. Won't make your teeth Hollywood white but does give them a bit of a lift

I use sensodyne Daily Care Gentle Whitening twice a day. I think it’s working slowly to whiten. And it scores ‘excellent’ on the Yuka app which assesses the risks of each ingredient based on potential effects on health. I’ve been using Yuka to avoid products containing suspected carcinogens since treatment for breast cancer last year. I’m extra careful about products I use every day.

Dentist whitening is the only safe and effective way to deal with it. Mine cost £500 but it was amazing. Pre treatment to stop sensitivity, moulds, use at home gels. Follow up gels available to maintain the treatment. No regrets. I look younger and am happy to smile now.

They charge $2,500 for whitening here so I think not. Also I have been told it doesn’t last that long. I have used the whitening toothpaste but it doesn’t really make much difference.

I think the enamel on teeth get thinner as we age which makes teeth look yellow, but do try the suggestions above

Momac55 Fri 20-Feb-26 13:42:51

You can get whitening gel from your dentist, it’s about £50-£60 at mine but you need the moulds first and I think mine were about £300 but you can reuse them whenever you feel your teeth need a boost
