How can you be 92 and look so stunning? envy
Joan Collins at Cannes Film Festival.

Jealous? I've never aspired to look like a made up artificial doll anytime in my life. I've never wanted

- or needed - to look like a painted doll - for that's what it's all about. Yes, my thoughts ar informed by whole generations of women trying to attract men's gaze:

It's actually not necessary. And most men, when they unwrap the package?

Well, lots do.
Lots don't
And some of us do sometimes.

Wear makeup I mean 😂😂😂

But then I'm not a film star. Not now anyway.
Are you?

Wyllow3 Wed 13-May-26 22:56:41

Dont be daft, as we say in Yorkshire..

No. I look after my skin, that really matters and my body as I have done yoga and other exercise lifelong.

Because I just loved yoga and other exercise. Face cream initially as my skin got dry after swimming then because a matter of wanting to skin care in some kind of natural way.

Yes I want less aged skin without wanting to plaster over it. And remove facial hair. The ususal stuff that we often have whole threads for - how to get rid of facial hair, best skin cream for different conditions and some skin treatments.

Of course it's totally different if you have a skin condition that you want to conceal or are ill in some way.

The "natural healthy" look I guess? But no one I know expects anything else?

Maybe it depends on the circles different people move in? I don't know? I always worked in jobs where it wasn't considered necessary like SSD and health in fact glam would have been inappropriate for vulnerable clients or community work.

Wyllow3 Wed 13-May-26 23:02:23

I'm not against make up per se. But I`recall as I say that a friend way back who was wearing lipstick and it was seeping into cracks round her mouth, or eye make up that got stuck in creases? Better spend the money on skin care.

As regards the O/P, imo its just got to the gross level of artificiality that signifies the desire to be appreciated just for how you look and the pressure to look young, younger = attractive

And yes I believe its part of a culture that is damaging to girls and young women, some using botox and so on in their early 20's to get "the look".

it doesnt need to be that way.

Obviously Joan is not going into a mental decline, as so unkindly mooted on this thread, she is still working and has just completed another film The Bitter End about the final years of the Duchess of Windsor released this month.

As posted on another thread, thanks DollyD 🙂

That is probably why she has styled her hair à la Duchess of Windsor too.

Kate1949 Wed 13-May-26 23:36:14

Well as I sit here in my old tatty joggers, baggy jumper, hair (which is artificial) grabbed up in a thingy, I would love to be glitzy, glam and sparkly in Cannes.

Wyllow3 Thu 14-May-26 00:59:09

Well.... I'd like to be weller and be able to go out more on walks and see more of family, but I would hate every single moment and the artificiality of it all.
I'd rather spend 2 hours with someone I'm fond of on a sunny day than all the glitz.

Totally agree. She looked good. The dress was not to my taste, si what it would be boring if we were all the same. but she carried well.
Joan does not need to seek approval of other women all she has to do is be herself. I also liked her hair.

Vintagewhine Thu 14-May-26 07:11:06

I am sick of women criticising what other women choose to wear and look. My mother used to say,if you can't say something nice, keep your mouth shut. When it comes to the criticism of other women's clothes and makeup I think it's a good plan.

Nope, not what was meant, and I wrote it!
It's in the title ....... how to steal the show - meaning how to to attract the most attention at the glamorous event. And probably performing better than everyone half her age because it's still in her blood her whole life.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 14-May-26 07:36:37

As I posted earlier, I am thrilled to see a very much older woman out and about, clearly loving life. As for that somewhat judgemental phrase about lambs and mutton, I would suggest the alternative version - " who wants to dress as mutton"?

There's a buzzword about Joan Collins going round at the Cannes Festival, and it's incroyable. Incredible.
Not only is her appeal timeless, it appears it's universal too.

Silvershadow Thu 14-May-26 08:17:36

Joan Collins is an actress. She is advertising her latest film about Wallis Simpson. Of course she’s going to put the effort in to look incredible and at 92 she does just that. She’s not a painted doll trying to attract a man, as others said, because she is happily married to Percy and has been for many years. Most women, and men, can admire the effort she has made at 92 to look as good as she does and wear high heels into the bargain. Nobody should underestimate the effort all this takes when it would be so easy to sit at home, slob about, make comments about painted dolls and be sanctimonious and miserable.

All power to Joan and long may she continue. After the career she’s had, its longevity, she is a true old glamour Hollywood star and there’s very few of them left. I note Jane Fonda was also there looking very good too.

foxie48 Thu 14-May-26 08:32:14

No one has commented on how JC stands and I think that's something that is often overlooked. She stands up straight like a much younger woman and that comes from looking after her body by continuing to do regular exercise that strengthens, conditions and stretches. She's done pilates for decades and also continues to do exercise to maintain muscle mass. You can wear a wig, improve your looks with treatments and make up but there's no quick fix for a body that has ceased to function because it's not been cared for. Joan has looked after hers and it shows!

MartavTaurus Thu 14-May-26 08:36:39

Apparently she can do the splits too!

Painted Dolls flipping heck it’s the 21st century, not the 19th😡😡😡. Such an old fashioned way to think…

I wear makeup for me

When the occasion arrives I glam up for me

I also exercise (Pilates, Callanetics, HIT, circuits etc.) for me

There are thousands if not millions of women round the world who refuse to equate aging with pinafores. I love fashion and style.

TheWeirdoAgain60 Thu 14-May-26 08:55:31

Absolutely gorgeous as ever!

Wyllow3 Thu 14-May-26 09:08:23

I do agree about the exercise she does being great for well being in every way. I love the gym and how it makes one feel better and keep active and mobile yes and stand up straight is a key Yoga/Pilates thing.

But we are in a culture atm where for example on a programme on Look North last night every single girl in a school being interviewed about a scheme to limit the hours of social media ages around 13 to 16 had felt it necessary to plater not he make up - young faces, beautiful as they are.

And have we really forgot the intense pressures still to be thin:

thin = beautiful and the rate of eating disorders gone up

And the bullying of girls because not of who they are but because of how they look? and for some, the consequences of that bullying?

why is this sanctimonious, to care?

It's not an either/or, "slobbing at home" or "total glam", now, is it?

Wyllow3 Thu 14-May-26 09:24:42

spelling correct "plaster on the make up"

Silvershadow Thu 14-May-26 09:26:44

Because the overall tone of your posts are sanctimonious on most threads quite frankly. Joan Collins isn’t responsible for girls plastering their faces with makeup or eating disorders. If you feel the urge to point the finger then look at modern day celebrities for that. However, the world we live in girls use make up to make themselves feel better. Joan Collins is 92. I very much doubt girls on Look North, South, east or west are influenced by her. It’s ridiculous to even suggest it.

I don't think you understand the fact that Joan Collins has probably always lived in a different world to the majority of us. Her father was a well-known theatrical agent, she appeared on the stage from a young age and went to RADA as a teenager, then straight into the film industry.

That's what many film stars do - wear makeup and 'glam up' in public. It's a way of life. It might not be ours but we all choose different paths in life.

The bullying of girls by boys has worsened in recent years and has more to do with the likes of Andrew Tate than women like Joan Collins.

Excellent point, Silvershadow and it made me laugh too 😂

Yes, I doubt that my teenage granddaughters have heard of Joan Collins! (sorry, Joan).

Joan is 92, she does not need to seek anyone's approval. She looks fabulous, she is still working and to me an example to the young about hard work.

What happened to personal responsibility, we should not rely on others how we choose to live our lives.

I do not think posters who did not like Joan's look are jealous, just judgemental. They may not like the glamour but leave it to others who do.

Wyllow3 Thu 14-May-26 10:03:03

She is a modern day celebrity Silvershadow. Yes, she lies within a culture of influential celebs.

Of course young girls aren't looking at her specifically, I'm seeing it as a social and cultural phenomena and the damage it can do.

Do point out another "sanctimonious" post else thread? grin

I do have strong feelings when I feel cultural tendencies may harm people.
Maybe its influenced by girls and young women I've met struggling because of trying to live up to what is put out there?
