A sea of seventies brown!

I’ve been out clothes shopping this morning, but came back empty handed because I felt like I was in a seventies time warp.

All the shops are full of all shades of brown, orange, tan, beige with the odd olive green for good measure. The modern versions of tank tops, flared jeans and balloon sleeves abound. I really don’t like browns, nor do I want to revisit the clothes of my youth.

Is anybody else enthused-as far as I’m concerned it’s going to be a low spend winter?

My grammar school uniform was brown, I try to avoid it nowadays at all costs.

I've bought some some lovely brown and beige cotton tops from lidl this year

My school uniform was brown - I think I suited it with my dark hair. However, I swore never to wear brown again and I’ve stuck to that pledge! In the ‘90s, by which time I was going grey, I had my colours done and brown was definitely a no-no for me, as were tan (hate it) and beige. I do like a bit of green though, so I’m sure I’ll find something to add to my wardrobe, maybe just gloves or a scarf.

I won't be wearing brown. My school uniform was brown too and I hated the brown knickers.
I don't like any of those colours Casdon mentioned. At least I will save some money.

I agree. Very depressing. I walked in to M&S to a sea of nasty shades of brown with peculiar greens and orange coloured stuff too.

I love brown in all shades and the autumn colours. For years it’s been almost impossible to get, with almost everything ubiquitous black.

So I shall have a field day (even though I may not get much use out of them and most of them will probably go to the Charity shop😬)

Then it can go back to black for the next twenty years.

Being a natural redhead (although somewhat faded now), I find that brown suits me and isn't as harsh as black. I have a summer dress which is a mixture of browns and creams. I also like khaki. However, I have no wish to revisit the 70's so I'll be avoiding tank tops and flares.

There are usually a lot of pastels around at this time of year and they don't suit me at all, I feel washed out in them.

My heart sank when I walked into M&S yesterday to be greeted with a sea of brown and black clothing. Similar in other clothing shops. I find brown such a depressing colour after all the pretty summer clothes.

AGAA4 I absolutely detested the brown knickers which were compulsory, the PE mistress and our form mistress often done a spot check to see if we were wearing them and not normal pants 🙀

Silvershadow Sat 15-Aug-26 12:25:40

Being fair with blue eyes brown has never suited me so I’ve never worn it, the same with beige. I prefer blues of any shade.

Lathyrus3 Sat 15-Aug-26 12:27:42

Yes I was a read head too and even though I’m now I’m white haired, it’s with a yellowish tone. And the skin tone to go with it.

Black and pastels are awful on us.

I don’t think one year out of brown out of the many, many years of black, black, black is a very big ask😬

My school uniform was also brown with a red stripe around the v neck jumper and off white shirts. I really don't like brown and I never wear brown clothes.
I also went into M&S this morning and thought everything was very drab. Being in the middle of a heatwave doesn't help when all we want to wear are cottons and linens.

Tenko Sat 15-Aug-26 12:42:16

I like brown , it’s more flattering against older skin than black .

Princess Ann is still wearing a favourite coat from when she was 18 _ it isn’t brown though! My school uniform was brown which I preferred to the bottle green other schools had. I quite like all the new shades in tbh.

I first noticed the 70’s vibe in our local M&S men’s department - it was a sea of brown and beige crochet fabric polo shirts and tops! Awful then and awful now. grin

I’ve bought a couple of pairs of brown trousers because autumn colours suit me, but I’ll wear them with pink or yellow tops, not beige.

I'm the same. Brown and beige just make me look even more washed out than I do to begin with.

I like wearing brown, having brown eyes and once brown hair. It took me a year to find a brown polo neck jumper that wasn't skin tight, and six months for a brown T shirt, both to go with the same brown and beige skirt, and two brown handbags, probably 20 years old.
But I do agree about the plethora of seventies outfits: flares, tank tops, balloon sleeves and tiered skirts and crochet everywhere.

I've been in 3 shops in town not Marks but they too are all browns orange nasty greens just horrible. I like green but this is sludgy green nasty. Not for me.

Fallingstar Sat 15-Aug-26 13:16:53

My uniform was bottle green with bottle green knickers. I wore a lot of brown and cream when it was first fashionable and quite liked it then but wouldn’t wear it now. I like bright colours of any hue.

valdali Sat 15-Aug-26 13:17:38

I quite like the autumny colours. Not so much in interior design, they're not always easy to live with for years I think.

But it's been a while since brown, orange & yellow were in & it is more colourful than when everyone under 40 was wearing black.

BlueBelle Sat 15-Aug-26 13:22:30

I can’t bear to think about autumn or winter clothes !
Anyway the beauty of buying at a charity shop is the great amount of any colour you can buy… I love bright colours all year round, browns and dark greens make me feel dopey and boring

Aveline Sat 15-Aug-26 13:26:05

I agree that black is harsh but I really like navy blue.

MT62 Sat 15-Aug-26 13:27:05

My favourite colours, but more for autumn time.

Oh mine was bottle green& those nylon think knickers.
I use to sew white stripes down the side & wear them for cross- country running as we were a bit hard up to to buy for proper running shorts 😂
