When does your computer become obsolete?

I have spent nearly three hours trying to get Virgin protection ( no - not that sort!) and ended up talking to a nice man in New Delhi who ordered - yes, ordered! - me to buy a new computer immediately.

My PC is only 7 years old, I yelped. He was dumbfounded. Then I realised it is actually 8 years old. And I have to admit it is very, very slow.

So how long have you managed to keep yours going, gransnetters? And what on earth am I going to buy now (presuming I can afford a new one)? shock

My desktop tower computer is about ten years old. I love it. One of our boys will always clear it of unnecessary stuff every so often so it doesn’t slow up too much. Day to day I use my tablet but revert to the desktop if I need to type anything more than a few lines because I can then touch type at speed. They laugh at our old system but we are content with it. I don’t like the finger control of a laptop. I like a mouse and keyboard. Yes I know I could get a proper keyboard and mouse for a laptop but why spend all that money.

It all depends on what you want to do with a computer. The ye old vibes from when I watched flappy-bird.io this when it first came out struck hard

Oh for a delete button. I just dived in with my fourpennyworth without reading that it was a Zombie thread !!!

I buy a cheap laptop every 3-4 years. Never pay more than £250. I don't need power or memory. Up to date and speedy is my criteria.
I can now run nearly all my programmes on an android tablet so I might not buy another windows machine when this one gives up the ghost.

Sorry. Didn't see that this was an old thread from 2012

Hattie 64 - I like my laptop, still have a bit of a problem typing on it,

You can plug a normal keyboard into a laptop. This is what I do as I find it much easier to type on. Not as portable though

I haven’t had a desktop in at least 15 years. I’m amazed to hear they are still available. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro, with its own keyboard (never used except as a hard cover) which I mainly use as a tablet, but I connect it to a large screen, full size keyboard and wired mouse when necessary.

I pay for Microsoft 365, which gives me masses of cloud storage as I need that for photos and some large files, and includes the better Teams, which is useful for some consultancy work I do. It’s regularly updated, and I don’t have to worry about getting my own anti-virus system.

I'm glad that technology is constantly evolving. And it helps to constantly improve the approach to business development. But you can't do without a business strategy presentation. Here you may need powerpoint presentation design slidepeak.com/ to make the presentation look impressive to the partners. And then the business will definitely succeed.

When does your computer become obsolete? Roughly about the time you first unpack it, I reckon...

My old Dell Dimension 4400 was so slick and speedy when I bought it - but that was at least eight years ago - it replaced an earlier Dell that didn't even have USB ports. I maxed out the RAM years ago at 1 Gbyte, and so I can't add more to speed things up. It runs Windows XP.

I also have a Sony Vaio laptop, with lots of bells and whistles - 500 Gbyte hard disk and 4 Gbyte RAM, running Windows 7.

I suppose I'm going to have to replace the desktop some day, but there's a lot of licensed software on it that I don't want to have to replace.

I converted to Apple about 2 and a half years ago, and love my MacBook. Nothing on earth will ever persuade me to change to anything else ever again. It does everything I need and lots more that I will never need, and so far nothing has become obsolete. I hope it will go on being fit for purpose for a good few years yet, as they are not cheap!

I bought this nice, fast, reconditioned Sony Vaio laptop from Ebay about three years ago. it has the much maligned Vista system which - touch wood - has given me no trouble. At the moment it suits me very well, although I have failed to teach it to talk to my printer remotely, so have to traipse upstairs and attach the USB connection.

jeni Thu 26-Apr-12 22:46:57

Too tired tonight.

glassortwo Thu 26-Apr-12 21:50:27

jeni I am told I witter grin

phoenix think you were very reserved in your choice of numpty grin

jeni Thu 26-Apr-12 21:36:53

Wittering?
That's what I'm accused of doing all the time
What's wrong with it, I want to know!
If I want to witter
Why am I not allowed to witter?

It is my freedom of speech to witter!

GNetters,unite!

We demand the right to witter!

It is a prerogative of grandmothers!

Boudicca, where is the chariot?

March!!!

Anagram Thu 26-Apr-12 21:20:59

Isn't it funny how some words, such as 'numpty', are commonplace and well known in certain parts of the country and not in others? When I first met OH twenty years ago, he'd never heard of 'wittering on', even though we'd actually grown up not far from each other....confused

jeni Thu 26-Apr-12 21:15:28

Oh dear! phoenix is this one of those " I told you so! " moments?
They can be SO exasperating ,can't they?
MEN!!!!

Anne58 Thu 26-Apr-12 20:54:19

Hello jack , numpty is a word I use for idiot, daft 'apporth, barmpot, whatever the local vernacular might be. My translation would be "you bloody daft stupid thing, didn't you think that through before you actually did it? Or perhaps "OK you went to the shop, you only needed 3 things, but you came back without 1 of them, " Hopefully you get the gist?

I suppose it's one of those words that no one should be able to take offence at. As opposed to other words that I am tempted to use!

My old PC died a death, had a virus, everything wiped, so after all my family grumbling about the slowness of the damn thing, I decided to get a laptop instead, which is certainly tidier than my old tower. I have Windows 7, a bit odd to start with, and a 17" screen, as it will sit permanently on my desk. I have an Ipad to carry around the house and elsewhere.
I like my laptop, still have a bit of a problem typing on it, and do use a mouse which I consider easier than the sliding thingie. The best thing is it is fast!!! My old pc used to take ages to fire up.
