Fighting fire with fire? Plan to make UK the world leader in AI.

. Prime Minister sets out blueprint to turbocharge AI.
Artificial intelligence will deliver a decade of national renewal, as part of a new plan announced today (13 January 2025).

www.gov.uk/government/news/prime-minister-sets-out-blueprint-to-turbocharge-ai

" . . in a world of fierce competition, we cannot stand by. We must move fast and take action to win the global race. . . Our plan will make Britain the world leader. " The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer

Well, I didn't see that one coming. Most people's opinions on AI are (like mine, to be honest) based on the rubbish that Facebook posters churn out using "AI for Dummies" type apps which steal bits of real posts and cobble them together to make pseudo-information.

I assume that the PM thinks we will be better off becoming the masters of this technology than its slaves or dupes. He could be right. The worst thing to do is ignore the phenomenon, know nothing of the good side of it, and be fooled by the bad side. The best path is to learn about how to use it and how to recognise when someone else is misleading us with it.

The reasoning seems to be that AI can automate and speed up production, data management and communication and improve efficiency and thus profitability.

I see google search results now have an AI answer at the top. I've just asked a question about the position of decks/cabins on a particular cruise ship, and the AI answer was patently wrong. Not very encouraging.

For my husband's business the results were quite helpful. However the input information was correct records. He was looking for and found long trends, data baking up potential profit and loss areas. Worked well.

DS is an academic. He is always writing papers for publication. So (tongue in cheek) he decided to see how AI could assist him. He fed a description of the subject matter of a research paper into an AI system and waited for the result.

The result was a hilarious, as NotSpaghetti says its research base was years out of date, it referred to research projects that did not exist, referenced to DS publications he had never written in journals that do not exist and its conclusions, to put it mildly, were eccentric.

Still is supplied us all with a source of innocent amusement.

bookwormbabe don't forget the stuff you can access easily hasn't been updated for some years now.
Maybe this has something to do with it?

David49*, I think AI produced novels are currently thought to be derivative!

Unsurprisingly!

It is meaningless tosh. Anyone can make aspirational speeches about what will happen in the future, but unless you then indicate how you intend to reach that nirvana, it is absolutely meaningless.

I am sure every other developed country has such aspirations. We heard similar speeches from various poiticians when in power about the wonders electric cars and battery plants would have in taking the economy forwards - and we can see what is happening there. The cars are made in China and the efforts to build battery plants has been disastrous.

As for our history of developing technology, yes we do - and then sell it off to the highest bidder, usually American and they make the money.

You are so right. I thought exactly the same when I heard him speak.

Monica here’s a screen grab of countries ranked by AI infrastructure and leadership in the field

I have never questioned Britian's place as one of the top AI countries in the world. But all the AI companies named by Starmer in his speech are foreign owned, or dependent on major foreign investment. Starmer's speech gave us no hope that that was likely to change

What I would have like to see was a stirring speech showing how this was going to change and what was going to be done to change this situation so that at last one of our top AI companies was owned adn FINANCED in Britain.

My grandson’s best friend (they live in France) has just spent 6 months in Australia working for a company working with AI in the medical/surgical field. A company that is a ‘world leader’ apparently!
He is 23! Whether we like it or agree with it, it appears to be the future!

I don’t know why everyone is wasting their breath.

It is happening world wide, whether you like it or not.

I do not think anyone is arguing against AI, just about whether Keir Starmer's speech was anything but hot air about Britain being a world leader etc etc.

As I pointed out every company he mentioned was foreign owned or had major foreign investors. If we want to lead the field we need it to be led by Britsh companies funded by British finance. But like everything else in the computer world since the 1960s. We do the development and then other nationalities fund it and sweep up all the profits and that seems to be exactly what is happening with AI if Starmer's speech is to be believed.

Being 3rd in the world doesn't seem too shabby. I guess it would be hard to get ahead of China and US so 3rd is no disgrace.

My son has a tiny company and uses it.
Doesn't make it good but he says it's useful.

I'm most excited about the medical uses.

The medical uses do sound significant.

I can’t help reading AI as Artificial Insemination . I was brought up on a farm🥴. Very worried when the NHS was mentioned

AI can do lots of things. But where is the regulation? Is there any? Considering that a lot will be used in the NHS this lack must be put right soon and before we become reliant on systems which are not documented, tested properly, or monitored.

Monica third largest AI hub globally is a fact, I’m sure it’s easy to find on the net, and under current government they’re planning AI centres to be built in deprived areas ie not London for a start, which will spread jobs out across the country. I mean we’re living through the equivalent of the last Industrial Revolution- it’s a messy time but but you’ve got to be in it to win it I guess

Cossy Wed 15-Jan-25 14:33:14

We have a shortage of AI experts in this country and of course we don’t want to be left behind.

I find AI interesting and pretty mind blowing.

Best to encourage our grandchildren to become hairdressers, musicians, yoga teachers and plumbers.

I’ve been telling them that for a couple of years. 😂

I don’t advise my GC, they have been indoctrinated at school that university is the only way I’m not going to waste my breath
2 that have done career based college are successful, 3 that have been to Uni have failed 2 given up 1 still trying

Starmer has given some good speeches lately.

The was a good AI report reporting on the pay difference between Keir Starmer and Sue Gray which pointed out she was on 175000lbs while he was only on 145000lbs. It's frightening how Labour jumps on these white elephant bandwagons.

If it's as safe as suggested it could be fine but do we really trust any govt. to ensure this? Just think of the chaos and obfuscation resulting from the Horizon computer cover up and this would be open to much more widespread abuse. I think it's being used as a distraction from the current economic problems and I'd rather they sorted out the NHS, education and immigration.

Amazon is, of course an American company as, no dubt is their AI software.

Lovetopaint037 Wed 15-Jan-25 11:23:20

I am still struggling to manage predictive writing and not let it say something I didn’t intend. Noticed Amazon use AI to collate reviews and give them a summary. It says AI on it and is quite good.

“So nothing underhand or conspiratorial about aany of it. As I said Keir Starmer is talking tosh, he is talking the talk, but not walking the walk.”

I will agree with that until I see evidence that it is more than talk

Same here.
