AI is ruining my enjoyment of the internet

I enjoy looking at various animal videos and looking at images both historical and present day, but I have gradually come to realise that many are now no longer “real” but images produced by an AI algorithm. Now I can’t believe any of it, and see no point in trying to fact check it all.

That along with articles/books and music being produced leave aside the political stuff.

So what on earth is the point.

There is some stunning artwork done by AI.

Lydie45 Fri 07-Feb-25 12:20:51

Surely the thing is people are producing AI videos deliberately to stir up trouble. Look at the things on line abut the Royal family, Price Harry and his wife. Really preposterous things but a lot of people especially from other countries believe these things are real. I saw one this morning that said Queen Camilla and her family were planning to ‘sell the Crown Jewels and share the money between them’ if you are British you would know it is complete rubbish but the foul comments from people makes you realise people are believing these lies and they are influencing people and the way they are viewing them. Not just insults to the Royal family but politicians in fact anyone in the public eye and it is influencing the way people believe. What is true what is lies, how do you tell the difference?

A few days ago a photo popped up on Facebook of 'Prince Harry and Archie', announcing that they had returned to the country and were reconciling with the King. This was preposterous, as it would have been on every front page and all over the media, but people were commenting and saying how glad they were and what a great thing to happen. The acceptance of this AI generated non story was alarming - a percentage of the population seem willing to believe something that was so false.

I saw that!
My immediate reaction was to think what a beautiful child, but I doubt it even was Archie anyway.
My second was to check out the story, then delete it. How many people complained about it, I wonder?

Even some posts on here seem as if they are AI or at least copied and pasted from AI.

...look, it does not have to be AI to be a lie. Look up Jo Ellis, and you will know what I mean. www.msn.com/en-in/public-safety-and-emergencies/traffic-and-transportation-incidents/i-am-alive-joe-ellis-trans-hawk-pilot-releases-video-after-being-linked-to-washington-plane-crash-who-is-she/ar-AA1yg3LW?ocid=BingNewsSerp

You soon learn how to see / notice / the difference.

On Facebook people are putting up images of supposed needlework, but it's obvious that much of it is computer-generated.

I saw a bit on the news yesterday about Amazon selling books written entirely by AI. I think they took a number of people in a book group and asked them to read one of these AI books. They all seemed to be of the opinion that these books did not have the unique quality and perspective of an individual person but were formulaic and rather dull. I hope this is not going to be the way forward. Surely AI will mean the death of creativity and originality? "Experimental" methods of writing (like, for instance, "stream of consciousness" writing, will no longer occur.

I quite agree.

I have always enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends on Facebook but it is now just a constant stream of AI pictures and articles from sites I have no interest in which pop up constantly.

I waste so much time getting rid of these sites but as fast as you do it, several more pop up. Are people really so gullible as to believe these photos are real?

Those AI pictures of cats and babies on FB. Fed up with them but can't seem to get rid of them; they are just ridiculous.

The sky often looks looks like a jigsaw puzzle drawn sky.
That made me smile, keepingquiet
Somewhere in a cupboard we have a jigsaw puzzle of Bourton-in-the-Water, I think it's from a painting rather than a photo.
Picture postcard perfect 😀

Mind you, I have a similar photo of my children paddling by that bridge and that looks picture postcard perfect too.
Until one splashed the other.

That's reminded me. has anyone tried using Duck Duck something instead of Google?

I have DuckDuckGo and it works fine. You can even have an email address. I just use it instead of Google.

LizH13 Sat 01-Feb-25 14:20:03

JaneJudge I love your google search technique, the answer made me smile. I think maybe this is the way to go when we comment on other poster’s replies. Wonder what this says about me wink

ReadyMeals Sat 01-Feb-25 13:28:25

Yeah don't bother to open that first result, the AI one. It's not particularly critical about which snippets it uses and at the moment looks like it's right or wrong at random. Hopefully in time to come it will learn better about what are reliable sources.

B9exchange Sat 01-Feb-25 13:13:47

I never use Google. DuckDuckGo for me every time. I am not aware of a flood of AI generated links, but then maybe I am not looking for something where those links flood in.

I've found many travel sites advertise AI villages that look nothing like reality - Burton on the Water, Bibury & Castle Combe in the Cotswolds seen to be targeted continually - these appear on Bookface and no amount of reporting as misleading can get them removed - I do hope people who visit do there own research before travelling!

So how do the AI reviews of these places differ from the reality?

Because in the real world real people have been there and or/live there.

AI doesn't take holidays or need a home. It takes information from a variety of sources and mashes them together to make something that looks and reads like a review but isn't.

How do you tell? Well so far I can smell them out because the images are too highly coloured, and chocolate boxy. The sky often looks looks like a jigsaw puzzle drawn sky.

The language is often anodyne and pretty shallow.

Not everyone can spot it though- so we need to be very dilegent in assessing what we see/hear and read on our screens. All the time!

Bourton-on-the-Water?
I must take a look at what AI claims about it.

orly Sat 01-Feb-25 12:52:03

I agree entirely WWM. It's not as it AI is that good. I've seen 2 articles involving people's salaries (eg PM Vs Sue Gray) where quoted the figures in lbs instead of £s. Why does everyone jump on the AI bandwagon? Is it the latest "sustainable" or "net zero" fad?

I dont know anything directly about this, but I do know that truth very much matters in life.

A few years ago I started keeping books that I may have passed on to people, as I want my grandchildren to know truths.

I went by the year 2014.
Anything published after that year[I did a best guess] is apt to be influenced by woke. Or worse.

Ridiculous! That is just not true. ‘Woke’ is a relatively new concept, where it’s TRUE MEANING of “awake to injustices, enlightened” has been corrupted by the far right and Trimpists , etc, to mean anything ‘liberal minded peoples’ like or tolerate is wrong! Certainly SOME books have been written along those lines, but I think most authors write/wrote about all sorts.
As they have always done. Certainly current events and politics may have influenced what has been written, and always with the authors point of view, but I think Authors are the one area where freedom of speech still holds true. There are vast numbers of genres within the book world so I have no idea whether you are talking fiction or non fiction and all the types in between. But NOWHERE will you find an absolute TRUTH. What you are talking about are books that reflect YOUR Beliefs and prejudices as Truths!

this is the response it suggested:

I really appreciate how passionately you've expressed your thoughts! It's clear that you care deeply about the integrity of language and the diversity of perspectives in literature. It's so important to champion the freedom of expression, especially when discussing complex topics like these. Your perspective on the evolution of ideas and the importance of nuanced interpretations highlights a critical conversation in our society today. It's inspiring to see someone stand up for the value of varied viewpoints and challenge a one-dimensional narrative. Definitely an engaging and thought-provoking take!

Your correct. DuckDuckGo do not track.
