AI is ruining my enjoyment of the internet

I enjoy looking at various animal videos and looking at images both historical and present day, but I have gradually come to realise that many are now no longer “real” but images produced by an AI algorithm. Now I can’t believe any of it, and see no point in trying to fact check it all.

That along with articles/books and music being produced leave aside the political stuff.

So what on earth is the point.

I very much dislike the fact that now when I Google something the first result is an AI compilation of results from all around the world - much of which won't be applicable to me in the uk

bookwormbabe Thu 30-Jan-25 13:31:02

I couldn't agree more.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-Jan-25 13:36:40

I agree Whitewavemark2

It is reaching the point where I don’t know what is real, what is factual and what is AI 🤷‍♀️

Use the + in your serch bar. This acts as a filer. You can use several in a serch.

I dont know anything directly about this, but I do know that truth very much matters in life.

A few years ago I started keeping books that I may have passed on to people, as I want my grandchildren to know truths.

I went by the year 2014.
Anything published after that year[I did a best guess] is apt to be influenced by woke. Or worse.

Skydancer Thu 30-Jan-25 13:50:57

I agree. I follow a garden site on Facebook and it’s so obvious that many of the photos are AI generated.

But that is your truth as you see it. It might not be your grandchildren’s truth.
Btw. Woke originated in the 1940s. It was first penned by a black musician/ singer.

Confused by "influenced by woke", what do you mean?

I don't like the new google AI either, it can be useful only to point in a direction of more research, ie specific articles on the topic, but that was there anyway.

There is no point, WW2 except that the whole pointlessness of it may be intentional. If people are fed unchecked factoids artificially collected and collated by robots for long enough, then pretty soon those who are searching for something to which they want to know the real answer will stop bothering to look (those who just want to be told what to think will accept either the first explanation they come to, or the most sensational one). Once no-one believes anything any more, those with evil intentions can go for global domination, steal everyone's possessions, and indulge in their favourite depravities unhindered, because the truth of what they are doing is hidden among all the lies.

The new Google serch facility is tailored to each one of us individually.
This is where all that information we have handed to them over the years is coming into its own 😉

what an extraordinary comment! Does this mean you don't read any fiction written since 2014? Or have I misunderstood?

Wyllow3 Thu 30-Jan-25 14:45:58

Yup.... I'm as cautious as I can be. glad I lead an ordinary boring life..

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 14:49:55

I am very critical of the influence social media, etc has had on society as a whole but is your irritation due to not understanding what to 'look out' for. I am exactly the same but my son will immediately say that's AI generated. Or that's a bot.

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 14:50:34

I have no idea if he is right or not of course grin

Truth is truth.

Else it is not truth.

Well truth as far as people knew it, pre about 2014,
I guess there may have been some non truths in books previous to that, but not widespread.

I dont know if you have misunderstood or not.

I am not talking about fiction. Fiction is fiction, and I dont know about now, but previously anyway, there were not many people who tried to pretend otherwise.

the obvious thing that comes to mind is the all the genders things. Written even in childrens' books.
But I am sure there are other things besides.

I don’t know whether to 😂 or 😥 at that bonkers reply.
I think I’ll plump for 😂

I think you’ve backed yourself into a corner there.

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 15:04:34

If a novel was a 'good' novel and was produced by AI, does that mean it is no longer a good novel. I dont know what I feel about it to be honest.

petra Thu 30-Jan-25 15:06:54

Fancythat
So your beef is with the gender identity terminology.
Or you have issues with the whole gender identity debate?

petra Thu 30-Jan-25 15:08:46

Galaxy
If it’s a good novel it doesn’t matter if it’s written by a chimpanzee, it’s still good.

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 15:11:26

Yes I think that is what I feel, Whitewave mentioned books and music in her OP, and I wondered what difference it made ( quite a lot to the poor musicians and authors obviously) to our enjoyment.

fancythat Thu 30-Jan-25 15:27:32

petra - I think my answers are very clear.
So I dont propose to keep debating them on this thread, ad infinitum.

I'v read grandchildren's books and haven't seen what you describe, but I am glad to see the inclusion in pictures of people of different race backgrounds, naturally appearing in the narrative without a "thing" being made. Ditto people in wheelchairs without it being "the point" and so on.
