Looking to purchase a Kindle for reading purposes only ( NO ADS) bit confused with reviews and would love to hear what works best for you

JamesandJon33 Sat 07-Jun-25 17:18:38

I use a kindle constantly. But it is a kindle fire and I think they don’t make them anymore. Mine has been great though and is nearly twelve years old. So sorry Aura399 , much as I would like to I cannot recommend a more modern one. Good luck though. I’m sure someone will be along with a good recommendation

Sorry, can’t really help as I just use the Kindle app on my iPad. Though I don’t use that much nowadays, my visual impairment means I use audiobooks mostly.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite, my second one bought for me for Christmas a couple of years ago. I find it brilliant - non glare screen, one charge lasts me ages (at least a week if I read for a couple of hours a day) and it doesn't take hours to charge up fully. I have had a Kindle since the first model came out (the one where you had to click a button on the side to turn the page) and wouldn't be without it, particularly when I go on holiday.

I also subscribe to Kindle Unlimited as I am a voracious, fast reader and can read a book in a couple of hours when I'm in the mood! Plenty of choice and you can download up to ten books at a time, returning them as you read them so that you can download another.

I use my Kindle a lot, it’s a Paperwhite bought as a present by my husband some years ago now. There are no ads/popups.

The Paperwhite is a comfortable size and I can use it outside,no glare on the screen so it’s great for lounging with in the garden or on holiday.

Another fan although mine has just stopped working although it's very old and owes me nothing. I've got the app on my tablet but I think I'll buy another kindle as the tablet is too big and heavy to take on holiday with me. I still love to hold a proper book but the kindle is just so convenient and I can share with my daughter so I get to read her books too.

This thread has been very useful (runs off to order a Paperwhite). My kindle is so old that it wouldn't support purchasing any new books. He has been invaluable over the years and travelled many a mile in my hand luggage, but sorry little guy, you're about to be replaced with a Paperwhite

If you don't want ads, get the kids version

Overthemoongran Sat 07-Jun-25 18:21:33

I don’t understand the comments re Ads, I’m on my 2nd Kindle now, I’ve been using them for years and I’ve never seen an Ad? I absolutely love my paperwhite, great for travelling and reading outside and I love curling up in bed with it, with just my hand outside the covers, its just the right weight and size for me to flick to the following page using my thumb.

My kindle is ancient and probably the cheapest one at the time. I only use it occasionally, but I read using the kindle app on my phone. It's smaller than the kindle so fits in my small cross body bag or my pocket. This means that I have the world of books with me wherever I am, which is wonderful.

We recently bought Kindles with ads - the ads are simply books that show when you first turn it on, that's all.

Elowen33 Sat 07-Jun-25 18:49:36

I have used a Kindle for many years, I have never seen an ad on it.

I’ve got my second Kindle Paperwhite, bought by my OH for my birthday. I endorse what Overthemoongran says. Only see ads for books.

Overthemoongran Sat 07-Jun-25 19:21:57

I paid Amazon a small, one off fee, and now the cover of my current book is displayed on the screen, not a tree, or famous author as there was before. I find this very helpful as previously I could never remember the title of the book I was reading.
I’ve never even had an ad for books.

I use the app on my iPad. I find it very easy to read if I enlarge the print as I have AMD. I do have an old Kindle for journeys but find the screen too small. I read a lot but no longer books unless large print and I have to order them from the library.

I loved my original Kindle, which still works perfectly years later. I do like sitting outside in the fresh air and reading so treated myself to Kindle Paperwhite as there is no glare on the screen so perfect for reading in sunlight. It is quick to charge up and a charge lasts a long time. The only adverts I see is when I turn it on and then it is only for books. You can easily change the display, font size, brightness etc. Wouldn't be without it.
I've also used the Kindle app on my Android tablet which works well inside but not for outside reading.

I've been using Kindles since I was given my first one in 2010 - the original keyboard model. I now have a Voyage and a Paperwhite and love them both to bits. The Voyage is my favourite but I think it's no longer made. Paperwhite is in no way inferior; it's just that the controls are slightly different.
They're great for reading in bed - screen is backlit so you don't need to have a light on and disturb a partner and you can easily adjust the brightness to suit the conditions. You can also adjust the font size with a couple of finger taps so you don't need your specs to read in bed.

I have two, an old one which I keep downstairs and a newer (but not new one) for reading in bed.

A Kindle is better for reading in bed, because it is so much lighter and less cumbersome than a book.

Books too, lots of them, but they're better for reading in the day-time.

I love my Kindle paper white. It's my 2nd kindle, as I passed the first one on to a friend. It's so good to read especially outside in bright light and at night when it doesn't disturb my OH when I read.

Truffle43 Sat 07-Jun-25 22:30:24

I adore my kindle paper white no ads no internet just reading. I have used it for years and absolutely love it . I never wanted a kindle but it was bought for me one Xmas and now I wouldn’t be without it and use it every day. As another reader said no glare so you can use it while outside. Lovely backlight for reading in the dark. Will buy another when this one give's up.

I have had a Kindle (I am on my third) for well over 10 years. I paid extra to have one without ads. I have ADHD and just do not want unnecessary distractions on my kindle.

Kindle is great for novels but not very good for non-fiction books where it has illustrations or maps. You can adjust the brightness and warmth of the background plus print size and font. I use mine mainly for winding down to sleep reading or when I wake at night so have the light both low and warm, so that it doesn't over stimulate me.

The other way I use it is slipping it into my handbag when I am going anywhere where I might be hanging around waiting - the doctor, the dentist, travelling on public transport.

henetha Sat 07-Jun-25 23:21:28

Kindles have ads? Mine doesn't.
But it is very old. I keep thinking of updating but don't think I will now.

M0nica Sat 07-Jun-25 23:48:45

They are usually ads for books, nothing singing dancing and moving around

GrannyIvy Sun 08-Jun-25 00:04:28

I love my kindle and subscribe to Kindle unlimited monthly. No problems with ads!!

vegansrock Sun 08-Jun-25 05:49:04

Love my kindle paper white . Only ads are book suggestions when you switch on . I’ve got a pretty cherry blossom cover for it which I bought from. Amazon .
