Holidays 2016

Narrowboat cruising for us; off to Kidderminster/Worcester/Droitwich and back on our own boat this summer-a really restful break for workaholic OH but less so for galley slave and lock girl, feeling my age sometimes! But we meet such lovely people and if the sun shines it is glorious; the deal is that every other year we holiday abroad so looking forward to that already!

Harrigran plan yourself something restful. I went to Florida a month after I finished my radiotherapy, and to be honest it was exhausting. (It was booked before was diagnosed) but a relaxing beach holiday might be just the ticket.

Holiday? what's that, I normally only get the odd weekend to my Dad's although FiL often pays for us to have a few days away for our wedding anniversary.

My husband died in February, and I have planned a solo trip to Scotland to scatter his ashes on his ancestor's ancient burial ground. I have booked sleeper train from London, hire car and accommodation, now need a boatman to take me and the ashes to the burial site (island in a loch). I will be making the journey in his memory, but also intend to have a lovely peaceful time in the beautiful scenery. I am also going on a trip to Verona in late July where I'll be going to two operas. I have never lived alone before, and am determined to make the most of it after several years of being a carer.

In june we are going to north cyprus for 10days. Looking forward to meeting our turkish friends again. In september its back to majorca. We stay in an hotel in the north of the island which is quieter with great views over the bay.We stay in Cala san Vicente which is a bus ride away from the lovely area of Puerto Pollensa.

That sounds wonderful. I always wanted to do the camino. Used to stand in the middle of the Rue St Jacques in Paris and say one day I'll head off that way( in the early hours of the morning after wine)

Paris next month for a long weekend with my Sister Aunt and Cousin , My Aunt is 85 and we struggle to keep up with her seriously .
Tenby in June with my gorgeous youngest son and his partner and MIL .
Portugal in July with Sister Her husband and lots of others !
Devon in August to visit family .
I realise I am a very lucky lady , we didn't have holidays when I was young except to Penryn bay to stay with the wonderful lady who was my Mums evacuee Mum during the war , we stayed in touch with her until she died at 97 and called her Aunty .

I would love to have some recommendations for "singles" holidays. I have been widowed for a few years and whilst I have visited Norway, New York and Turkey in recent years they have always been taken at times to fit in with a friend. Maybe now is the time to take the next step.

Rome in April.
Wales on trains, steam where possible, in May.
Open Golf in Scotland in July.
Probably France in late September.
Can't wait. After 40 years of teaching it's great to be able to go out of school holidays.

August sees us off on a Med cruise and stay to celebrate our Silver Wedding anniversary on the 7th. After retiring from teaching 6 years ago, we vowed never to go away in August, ever, ever again. But.... I don't really mind this time as we'll be seeing some of our favourite places - Rome, Florence and Barcelona.
In November we are having a 'Big Trip' to South Africa. We'll spend a few days in Capetown, then hire a car to go to the Winelands and do the Garden Route. Then back to C'town for 5 days in a beachside hotel.
When I was growing up, we never had holidays apart from the odd visit to my aunt near Hereford. I know how lucky I am now. We try and have a short beach holiday each year and where possible, a Big Trip. We were visiting Venice a couple of years ago as part of a cruise and there were two gentlemen with us, who both walked with sticks, struggling to get on and off the tenders to port. It really made me want to do what I can, while I can.

Having a week in Spain in May at timeshare then in June a Med Cruise for our 50th wedding anniversary. Rail holiday in Puglia in September. Big year for holidays, trying to do it while we can. We consider we are very fortunate to have these trips to look forward to!

Portugal.
Lisbon most popular city in Europe, with nearby beaches and Sintra a world heritage site. Cheap flights with Ryan air and easy jet.wonderful in spring.
Algarve wonderful but busy in July and August. Great golf.

We are going to Dorset with all the family next week to celebrate Poppa's 70th. Then we take the caravan to Cheltenham for the Jazz festival, then Cambridgeshire to cycle, the New Forest to see brother and s-i-l, Isle of Wight with younger daughter and family to help with twins of 20 months and two elder children! We have also booked to go to Anglesey and Chester in the autumn.

We love retirement! Our biggest treat though is our first cruise to the Baltic.

We now believe in Carpe Diem - who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Hi Annsixty, so sorry that you're not able to get away on holidays. I loved your motivational message! I tend to keep putting off going anywhere because, between difficulties planning annual leave from work (I'm a nurse), figuring out a place that would suit everyone's needs and wants and sorting the dogs etc, it always seems more hassle than it's worth. You may just have inspired me to go off and make more of an effort - thank you

Last minute job to Paphos in Cyprus. Never been to Cyprus before. DH decided that we needed to get away for a bit of sun and 'escape' from a stressful family problem for a week or two. Thought about Mexico / Cuba but didn't fancy the long flight at the moment and Spain's weather can be a bit unreliable at this time of year. Just want to lie back with stack of books -on Kindle- and chill out. Fingers crossed that Cyprus will do the job.

I'm going to Portugal soon Galen. By aeroplane though. Not a cruise.

Then Summer hol on Côte d'Azur, and Seville in October. I love cities.

Oh. Actually, it's not till end of May. Sigh.

Going to Pembrokeshire next week. That might be ok.

Going to Rutland Water in May, and Tuscany as per the last 10 years in September... and spending the whole Summer here in our sunny mountains in Switzerland- swimming in lakes, and hopefully walking and cycling again- when knee has recovered from op (can just about see light at the end of the tunnel- 3 weeks to the day).

I know !*Ana*. I just get fed up with the same old same old. I've got a daughter who loves travelling and is quite willing to have me along, so I might as well. Live a little. About bl sodding time too.
