Obese Passenger

'A disgruntled flyer is suing Emirates airline and claiming his nine-hour flight was 'ruined' by an obese passenger seated next to him.' (title from Daily Mail)

I had the same trouble and sent this ode to the airline I used via FB.

I arrived at the airport in plenty of time, my brand new passport passed scrutiny on its very first time.
"Yes"!!!!
Every thing was going fine
Then, just about take off a shadow descended, I looked up and there a mountain had ascended
All light had been extinguished
My heart gave a flutter
The man by the window and myself looked at each other, OMG this humongous mass was expecting to sit between us!
I got out of my seat to let this 'thing' in.
As this mountain squeezed and grunted into the middle seat of the row
Fat from his body started move. Easing his body down into the seat, it started to grow....:-(
Over the arm rests squished the mass as he tried to become thinner by crossing his arms,
I tried to sit down, only a few inches were left for my arthritic body.
It was like sitting next to a sweaty brick
His seat belt extension duly arrived, the attendant could not look me in the eye.
'Pull out the table'! I said to myself at least claim some space before getting engulfed
The guy at the window chose alcohol instead, and downed plenty of gin to help get by
As the flight progressed no apology from this monster.
He snored, sniffed, and gobbled his food in a flash
He never moved
Not even venturing to the loo.....
About half way through the journey the guy at the window exploded.
He wanted to use his laptop but no room could he find to load it
Invasion of space was the cry of the day
Just a moment......! Our safety has been severely impeded
Still no apology from man or attendants
One was definitely expected and needed
No wonder United 26 staff hid away, at the end of a 7 hour flight
There was no happy smiles as the passengers disembarked
The dust can be seen as the staff scurried away
Yet....... still no apology came our way......

Has anyone had s similar experience?

{smile]. I can do cuddly. But there are downsides, having been Cuddly for over 60 years, my lower joints are knackered, it's my left hip atm, which is why I am on here at silly o'clock, because I'm in too much pain to sleep, waiting for co-codemol to kick in.

Maggie, have you unblocked me ? I really want to apologise personally.

Jessielovestuna Thu 29-Sept-16 22:33:40

Aw Maggie, thats funny and proves my point. Big cuddly men should be seen as a bonus on a flight.

Maggiemaybe Thu 29-Sept-16 22:30:24

Actually, I do like a cuddly man. I sat next to one on the flight back from Poland this week and he was quite charming. He was so obviously trying to hold himself so that he didn't impinge on my space that he must have been uncomfortable. I'd have just told him to lift up the armrest and relax and we could have cuddled up, had DH not been sitting on my other side grin He's such a spoilsport.

Tried the 5:2 for four months, Jane. Lost one pound on each 'starve' day and put it straight back on over the next couple of eating days. Kept to around 1000 calories on the eating days. I did manage to loose about four pounds - but that's back on again. One pound a month. Most depressing. I'm just very economical to run!

Jessielovestuna Thu 29-Sept-16 22:28:11

No me neither if it was a girl. I only thought about that after I posted. A big cuddly man would be nice.

Why do we have this objection about touching each other? It is almost like an electric shock if we touch a stranger.

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 22:23:56

Jessie, sorry, I don't want to cuddle some of the guys I have sat next to. grin

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 22:22:53

WE were looking through some old holiday pics from 1964 ( I was 19), hardly recognised myself. Didn't realise just how much our son looks like me when I was younger.

Jessielovestuna Thu 29-Sept-16 22:22:39

Couldn't we embrace big people and cuddle into them by removing the arm rest? I think that would be nice, but then again I have had two glasses of red and would cuddle up to anyone grin.

Ohhhh....you're Pompa! I missed him! When you said you wished that there were more men on GN I thought I hope Pompa comes back because you two would get on so well!! It all makes sense now.
I agree you dont look obese in the photo , just cuddly , which is what I like in a man. My H is cuddly. Though he thinks of himself as hunky, apparently!

Luckily, because I always needed flexible tickets I only flew scheduled airlines. Our holidays over the last few years have been with Titan who use BA and we upgrade to BC (not very much more for European destinations)

Jalima Thu 29-Sept-16 21:21:57

DS is always cramped in an airline seat too - he's slim but very tall and some budget airlines have very little space between the rows.

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 21:07:05

That would mean creating another identity, I doubt GNHQ would like that, I'm probably on their black list already.
But PompaPoo could be an option. Perhaps I will go cap in hand to GNHQ and ask for Pompa back sometime.

Brilliant Elegran!

Elegran Thu 29-Sept-16 20:29:57

Pompatoo?

Elegran Thu 29-Sept-16 20:29:36

WB Could you come back as Pompa2 or some such name?

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 20:21:14

Having travelled many 1000's of air-miles in my job, I can confirm that some airlines are better than others, at 6ft it is not only the width, but the leg groom. I always traveled by scheduled airlines and usually economy. The worst flight was an old BA 747 back from Toronto, I had bruises on my hips after the flight. Quantas were pretty spacious, better than BA. It is not just the actual seat spacing, but the design of the seats.

I can really recommend the 5:2 diet. As I can't get out much due to problem knee just now I decided to look at what I actually can do to help myself. I'm amazed at the effectiveness of it. I mean my blood pressure has reduced a lot already and I can happily fit my jeans. That's after 3 weeks. Note this isn't a diet post but just to highlight the difference 2 days fasting a week can do. The science behind it convinced me!
Sorry about your hip wobbly. Joints eh?!

whitewave Thu 29-Sept-16 20:07:40

nfkdumpling I'm an 18 and didn't feel at all too big for the seat last month when I flew. Sod them I say.

I have gone through all sorts of emotion trying to lose weight as no doubt everyone in the same position. I know the difficulty - I envy those who find it possible.

Any one who has the nerve, Ill grace and bad manners to comment can bugger off.

Blimey I'm turning into jing

NfkDumpling Thu 29-Sept-16 20:00:21

I have the same problem WB. I have to drop below 700 calories in order to loose weight. Very difficult for a foodie to maintain for any length of time. So at size 18 airline seats are quite snug for me and upgrading would mean no trip. I'm trying desperately to loose a bit before we go away in November, but it's not budging as I've injured my back so exercise is difficult. I believe some airlines, especially the ones used by Americans, are now making their seats a bit bigger.

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 19:58:15

Sorry, "unpleasant" wasn't what I meant, unsympathetic or unkindly, would have been better.

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 19:36:07

If we can keep away from unpleasant comments I will put my side of obesity.

Both my Wife and I were fat as children, just after the war and the end of rationing. Both our parents were being kind by ensuring we had what they hadn't had. This mean't too many sweets, puddings, carbs etc, all the things we would not give our children today. This style of living was with us until we were married at 21/20, by which time the damage was done and our metabolism was set.
We have attempted to loose weight many times with short lived success. I have to go below 800 calories/day to lose weight and I cannot keep that up for long. As we got older our fitness declined and we do less than we did when we were 60.
Recently my fitness improved and I was losing several lbs a week, then we were both hit by debilitating conditions that mean we cannot walk. My wife had a fall and has a groin strain, and my hip joint has collapsed, so it will be months before we can work off the calories again.
This depresses both of us and guess what -- we eat more.

I don't think we are at all unique, I am sure that many overweight people can empathise with our situation.

I am very conscious of encroaching on others personal space, which is why, if I am paying, we travel business class on planes. How many of us would buy a car that had the same seating room that economy class gives ?

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 19:17:29

Tricia, also, recently I fitted mirror doors on our wardrobe, they don't lie sad (our wardrobe -- that's a joke)

Wobblybits Thu 29-Sept-16 19:14:36

Maggie, please unblock me so that I can resend my apology. ou deserve to see it.

Tricia, however we look we are both above the 30bmi mark, which is the level for obese, my aim is to be overweight smile

Jane, how I wish I could be Pompa again, unfortunately because I flounced and left GN, I could not re-use my old name. Pompa is my RL name that my GC know me by, it is a traditional name in my family, I am the third Pompa.

Jane10 Thu 29-Sept-16 18:57:16

Maybe he should change his name from Wobblybits? I always think of him as his previous name(s) anyway.smile

TriciaF Thu 29-Sept-16 18:51:14

WB posted a group photo recently and he didn't seem at all overweight to me. His wife neither.
