is anyone else considering their carbon footprint?

Sorry if I come across as a party pooper but twice recently people who have been on climate change protests and cry when they watch the TV programmes about melting ice, extreme weather and homeless animals, have also caught planes because they say:

trains are too slow and prohibitively expensive

Isn't it about time we/they woke up to the fact that we are part of the problem ?
What do others think?

I would be truly interested to know. I see on facebook today several friends are jetting off on their third or fourth trip this year. I have flown when there is no other choice, or driven my petrol car, but I always first consider the alternative - which is often far more fun and part of the holiday. Train to Europe for example.

When I was young we holidayed once a year, in the UK, whatever the weather. We didn't go abroad until I was in my late teens.

Well I have had a real Xmas tree for the last 2 years . What a special treat . I almost cried when my DH brought one home 2 years ago as I had never had a real tree ever. Bought from a local farmer /grower . When finished We stripped the branches and composted them in our own composter and have used the little trunks as plant stakes . Not a bit wasted . I also have a little tree in a pot which I hope will be big enough in a year or two . smile

? the council where my mum lives uses recycled trees to help preserve the sand dunes.

notanan2-I went onto the CBBC website for the following information to explain why I think there is a lot of confusing information about palm oil. Here are some screen shots.

Did you really not know who XR are?

Of course I know who extinction rebellion are, but had never seen it written as XR.

And so what if some of then are "hypocrits"? That shouldnt mean that others shouldnt worry about flying!

I think perhaps if we don’t practise what we preach it’s probably best to keep quiet ?.

Palm oil:

Deforestation happens for all kinds of crops.

Lower yield crops need more space (and more deforestation) and resources (like water) and time and processing to produce X amount of end product.

Palm oil is higher yield than othet oil crops. So takes less space, time and resurces to produce X amount of end product. Making it "greener" than the oils that are used instead in "no palm oil" products.

Who the flip said....?!!!

No. I give up notanan. grin

Who are you talking to? Have any GNers said they are active members if XR? How is it relevant to what the rest if us do to address climate change?

Well I've had one little shorthaul flight to France this year Gillybob. So I'm not shutting up.

Gonegirl Sun 06-Oct-19 12:30:22

gringringrin

I've got roast spuds to get in. Late already. #lethebuggerswait

Many products that use the "no palm oil" marketing ploy use oils that are worse for the environment.

It is another example of "just buy less" rather than "buy greenwashed substitutes"

Especially as palm oil is often in non necessity products that we just dont need anyway

Instead if switching to not so green products to buy instead, its best to think about whether we need to buy it at all!

notanan2 Sun 06-Oct-19 12:39:47

Villifying palm oil is convenient. We cant save the planet without being inconvenienced.

FWIW a LOT of deforestation happens for another crop: trees! The wrong kind of trees. In the wrong kind of soil!

notanan2 Sun 06-Oct-19 12:41:34

The soil in biodiverse forests HOLDS carbon.

The soil in "forestries" (who run carbon offsetting schemes) RELEASE previously earth bound carbon into the atmosphere

notanan2 Sun 06-Oct-19 12:44:06

Bogs and heaths etc also hold a lot of carbon that is released when the land is drained for forestries.

No Im not villifying trees. Just showing that you cant say X crop = bad and Y crop = good

We are just consuming too much too fast. Of everything.

And "offsetting" is a con

Did I mention your name Gonegirl no I did not . Do I begrudge you your holiday/flight ? No I do not .

Do I think those XR people who protest about air flights and then take flights themselves are hypocrites ? Yes I do .

notanan2 Sun 06-Oct-19 12:46:21

Do I think those XR people who protest about air flights and then take flights themselves are hypocrites ? Yes I do .

But what does that have to do with how other people should feel about flying??

Gonegirl Sun 06-Oct-19 12:56:40

gb I know who you're getting at! (Maybe I don't blame you, but his heart's in the right place wink )

gillybob Sun 06-Oct-19 12:59:53

I do t know what on Earth you are on about gonegirl who is “he” ? Prince Harry ? I’m lost ?

I am happy for anyone to fly anywhere their hearts desire . I just don’t like being told what I shouldn’t do, by those who do it themselves . Not that I fly because I don’t .

gillybob Sun 06-Oct-19 13:00:17

Ooops don’t .

Gonegirl Sun 06-Oct-19 13:03:19

Oh. Sorry. Just wanted a laugh.

Best get back to the sodding dinner anyway. Maybe I'm going doo-lally.

gillybob Sun 06-Oct-19 13:33:23

Happy to have obliged grin Enjoy your lunch x

Grammaretto Sun 06-Oct-19 13:52:17

You have both made me smile too smile
I am glad that I brought up the subject and today's conclusion is that whatever we personally do to make changes, however small, are the only way big changes are ever going to happen.

I am sorry you didn't like the train journey henetha. I hope next time it works out better. I went by train from Edinburgh to Penzance and back earlier this year. It was 11 hours and interesting all the way. The views were magnificent and I finished knitting a sweater. I did have a seat however.

We also have a real cut Christmas tree grown by our local community woodland. Afterwards I put it outside until the needles drop . I then use it as a support to grow peas and sweet peas up. Then I chop and burn it for firewood. That is my indulgence, I'm afraid. I love my open fire but don't have it every night.

PamelaJ1 Sun 06-Oct-19 14:04:08

So, notanan2, never mind about the orangutans then or the burning forests?

gillybob Sun 06-Oct-19 14:04:52

Oh I would love to do a really long train journey Gramaretto ( with a seat ) it seems so romantic. Having said that I just love the train. smile
