So that's it then, France is off! Quarantine from Sunday 4.00am

We were so hoping to be able to go, it was an isolated house in a very low CV area, but that's it we have to cancel house, flights, car hire etc and hope to get something back or move to next year. I know it is sensible if numbers are rising, and it was a bit of a gamble of course, but it gave us something to look forward to, and it is a big disappointment.

Anyone else in the same position?

EDIT by GNHQ: OP requested we point out that the title should read Saturday 4am.

mokryna the French quarantine for those from the UK will probably be voluntary again, which I don’t really understand. Having lived in France, friends are saying a lot of their tourists are from Belgium and the Netherlands, both with high rates of COVID, not just the UK.

Froglady Sat 15-Aug-20 12:16:43

My sister and brother-in-law were taking two of their grandchildren with them to their house in Brittany but can't now as the children would miss 2 weeks of school when they came back and they are both starting new schools this year. So that's their break gone with their grandchildren.

France, Belgium, and Holland have much higher rates of infection than Britain. That’s why quarantine has been introduced, to try to prevent lots of people bringing it back with them and then infecting others.

Ellianne good post.

maddyone Sat 15-Aug-20 12:57:58

All people need to do is change their holiday plans. My daughter has quickly rearranged her family holiday and is now going to Norway, where the rate of infection is very low.

I thought I was going mad about the title of this thread, but it seems it was to be 4.00am tomorrow and then Wales, Scotland and NI put pressure on for it to be brought forward 24 hours. I did ask GN to change it, but no luck so far!

Have rebooked the villa for next year same time, easy enough to cancel the car hire, (seems literally twice as expensive for next year for some reason!) but flights are a real problem. Ryanair will only allow you to change, no chance of a refund, and you can only change for free up to 31st March, which is also when then flight schedule stops.

Their online chat isn't working, their phone isn't answered - hung on for and hour on a couple of occasions - so not sure what to do. Have to do something before 2nd Sept or will lose the money altogether. Would you advise booking a phantom flight before end of March, and attempting to move it again (probably at huge expense) when there are flights for Sept 2021 available?

I know for some of you this will seem like a first world problem, and I apologise for that, but this was a surprise holiday for DH, booked ages ago. Holiday insurance has a hefty excess premium to keep the cost down, and has since brought in CV restrictions, so don't think that is the answer.

Merlotgran says it as it is. The virus is still with us. Ignore it at your own risk until either there is an effective treatment or a vaccine.

We had a full refund from Ryanair. They offered us a voucher. We said 'no thanks' and we got a refund. It took a while but we got it eventually.

And once again M Macron following Frau Merkel is calling for a "non" for British tourists coming into France.
Quarantine likely.
That's nice after their visit to Cornwall.
And what about the German footballers coming to play next Tuesday?

Kali2 Thu 08-Jul-21 20:26:22

You are aware of course, that tourist and visitors from EU have to do so many tests and quarantine when coming to UK- as per UK requirements. Despite numbers being much higher and rising fast in UK?

AS for footballers- I totally agree with you. The 66000 at Wembley and even more on Sunday- is just ridiculous bordering on criminal. But they all have to be tested first, at least.

Chewbacca Thu 08-Jul-21 20:59:07

Yes, we're aware kali2.

Are you aware of the fact that France currently has the highest number of confirmed COVID cases in the EU, as at today's date?

Casdon Thu 08-Jul-21 21:43:14

Chewbacca I think you mean the UK has?

Kali2 Thu 08-Jul-21 21:52:01

Casdon, yes you are right. Chewbacca, could you give the source of this (wrong I believe) information, please?

Kali2 Thu 08-Jul-21 21:52:55

I think PCR test before travelling, and quarantine and further PCR tests should continue to be compulsory BOTH WAYS.

lemongrove Thu 08-Jul-21 21:54:59

merlotgran

It hasn't gone away. It's still out there.

Don't book a holiday.

Simples!

Exactly

Kali2 Thu 08-Jul-21 21:55:37

If we are not prepared to PCR test before and again after, and quarantine- to stop the spread of Covid, both ways - then we don't deserve to travel.

Kali2 Thu 08-Jul-21 21:59:31

Ellianne

The French do have strange manners sometimes, but they really need British tourists too.

The UK needs EU tourists too, but have very strict quarantine and testing in place. Makes absolutely no sense now to stop this- BOTH ways, to stop the disastrous spread and fast rise.

Chewbacca Thu 08-Jul-21 21:59:37

Chewbacca I think you mean the UK has?

No I don't Casdon; I said, and meant, the EU. Great Britain isn't included in the weekly EU stats.

Casdon Thu 08-Jul-21 22:03:30

But France doesn’t have the highest numbers in the EU either, that dubious honour falls to Spain at the moment, they have 17k+ infections, whereas France have 4K+ according to Worldometer.

The case numbers are the cumulative cases on this list, here’s the Worldometer link for the current position.
www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Chewbacca Thu 08-Jul-21 22:20:18

Possibly so casdon but I went directly to the EU Centre for Disease Prevention and Control because they've been releasing daily updates on every member state since the 11th March and so I imagine that their statistics are fairly plausible. I imagine the the UK isn't included in those stats because, as you may have heard, the UK left the EU last year; hence I quoted in my post @ 20.59 France currently has the highest number of confirmed COVID cases in the EU, as at today's date

Chewbacca Thu 08-Jul-21 22:30:31

Chewbacca, could you give the source of this (wrong I believe) information, please?

kali2 please see above ?

Casdon Thu 08-Jul-21 22:40:31

I’m not saying the EU stats are incorrect Chewbacca, but a cumulative total case rate since the beginning of the pandemic doesn’t tell you the current position for France, which as you will see from the Worldometer table (using official figures reported daily by countries across the world), France reported far less new cases today than Spain. I know of course that UK is no longer in the EU, but I thought you had transposed the figures between France and UK, as their new case rate is about one eighth of ours at present. Hope that’s a clearer explanation.

MerylStreep Thu 08-Jul-21 22:44:33

Are these the figures.
