Holidays anyone had one

We've had two holidays so far since lockdown ease. First one, booked pre CV was to a static caravan in a holiday park at St Osyth. We had DGC with us for a couple of days. Sweltering hot but had a nice time. No one wore masks except us and you'd think everything was as normal. Second one to Canterbury in our caravan good weather other than the Tuesday had 47mph winds....very scary but luckily van and awning weathered the storm.
We have 3 more trips out in the van. They're bunched together as they've been rescheduled from earlier on in the year.
We even braved the buses in Canterbury.

I had a trip to Sydney to see DD2 & family in Feb and returned the day before lockdown. Apart from 2 visits to DD3 (hardly a holiday!) nothing, but we are renting a cottage over half term in Mousehole so looking forward to dinner at Michael Caines in Porthleven which will be my first meal ‘out’ in 6 months, a visit to the Tate in St Ives & hopefully a trip to the Barbara Hepworth museum too. It’s so good to have something to look forward to after so long in confinement.

Had a cruise booked for beginning of June, deferred until next year so just a couple overnight stays in Scotland really miss our city breaks trying to see as much of the world as we can but there is always next year “hopefully “.

We had our holiday cancelled with Sykes Cottages even though we booked and paid for it in October 2019. We did not cancel it; they did. They assured us that our money would be refunded within 2 weeks.
Months later and we are still waiting to see our refund (just shy of £1000).
In tears as I write. Have had cancer and this was our first post-treatment holiday. So upset... they won't answer my calls (get cut off) and have had no response to the daily emails I send them.

I feel ok about getting away but DH still a bit anxious about it all. We would only go on a staycation. I think we will probably now aim for Easter but rent a place where we can have all grown up children and grandchildren. So we are saving at the mo.

Had a wonderful holiday in South Africa in February. We booked it in the summer of 2019 after deciding whether it was to be somewhere on our bucket list or change the bathroom. The holiday won on a 'who knows what the future holds'. Little did we know.
The news of Coronavirus outbreak in China was just making headline news while we were there. Had I known then what I know no I would have been far more nervous about the man sitting next to me who was clearly unwell and spent the entire journey shivering under 3 blankets!

Just back from a week with the family in a beautiful seafront house just outside Margate. Weather wasn't brilliant but it did us all the power of good. This year it was very quiet and most people were social distancing and wearing masks. The local economy clearly needs some support.

Naninka did you pay for your holiday using a debit or credit card?
If so contact the card provider and tell them the problems you're having with Sykes Cottages.

I know how you feel as I have been repeatedly chasing Jet2 for a refund for flights they cancelled in May.
With your health problems you don't need the extra stress, I hope you're recovering now.

We live in a small village on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon and have a large garden, so it's been a joy having time and good weather to get out more in the garden and countryside. We normally have one main holiday and a couple of short breaks but haven't really missed them this year.

MaryXYX Sun 06-Sept-20 11:15:59

I had my week on a canal boat in July. Not really proper social distancing as there were three of us. Fairly well isolated from the rest of the world.

Petalpop Sun 06-Sept-20 11:22:43

None for us. DH has been on furlough and has spent his time doing all the jobs that needed doing and he never had the time to do. So holiday money spent on the house. Plus I am 70 next year and hopefully I can have a special holiday then.

Aepgirl Sun 06-Sept-20 11:34:33

I wouldn’t even think of a holiday of any sort until we have a vaccine programme. It is clear why there are new ‘spikes’ of infections - it is people travelling outside their own area.

We had a fortnight in July in our own caravan which is kept on a site in Devon. Another week in August and another week coming up, all at the van. We pretty much stayed in our van or awning, except for when I did some lovely walks in the gorgeous woods which surround the site. Arrangements for use of the site shop and swimming pool very well managed, and some facilities there closed for covid safety, so I have no qualms about using this site as they are very much on top of what needs to be done. We didn't do our usual visits to NT places and local attractions and shops, because of the faff and lack of spontaneity because of pre booking and the loathsome mask wearing. However still nice to be 'incarcerated' in a change of scene.

Recently returned from 5 lovely weeks in the Canary Islands. Trains were good as were the airports, flights, hotels and at my final destination.
The island was great. Strict rules on masks outside amongst other people and in shops. But no queues or having to book in or provide intrusive details in cafes or restaurants.
Back home for a few weeks then hopefully fly Back out for the winter.
I’ve stopped thinking of “safe” or “not safe” as we all have to make Personal risk assessments and get on with life.

No holidays, in fact I've only ventured to the hairdresser's once! We have a camper van but it doesn't have its own toilet and shower. I hate the communal shower blocks at the best of times so am definitely not going anywhere, DH is talking of going alone. Our trip to Australia to see my daughter, partner and new baby was cancelled. We are both on medication which, more so DH's could put us at risk.

ninathenana Sun 06-Sept-20 12:03:48

We rescheduled our Warners break from April 2020 to April 2021. We won't be going anywhere before then.

ninathenana Sun 06-Sept-20 12:11:13

Just to add, I can't fault Warners on their refunding. Had a letter saying, when your ready to reschedule just give us a call. When I did this, I was told immediately that funds had been transferred to the new booking

Not long back from a week self catering in Langdale in Lake District. Walking seemed busier than usual especially as rain had soaked the fells and everyone was sticking to walks that offered something firmer underfoot than squelching bog and mud. Felt safe except for day we walked over and into Grasmere. Hundreds of people with little evidence of social distancing and looking through windows not much evidence of spacing between cafe tables either.

I was thinking about maybe taking a lone trip with Shearings, or something similar, and weighing up the pros and cons. Unfortunately we have had rather a traumatic family occurrence, so I have other things to occupy my mind right now.
All I really want is to get to Australia to see my new grandson, and my 3 year old GD and my extended family out there. That’s pie in the sky for the foreseeable future though.

Emelle Sun 06-Sept-20 12:27:01

We had booked to go away on the 3rd July so it was delayed by a day but as we know the place well and were the first occupants for a few months we were happy to go ahead. It was a little different from our normal holiday in Keswick as we avoided going in to town when it was likely to be busy but we enjoyed it as much if not more than usual. We'll be booking again for later in the year as long as there is no major spike in cases.

keeno Sun 06-Sept-20 12:56:01

No, not this year.
Would love to but due to risk for hubby, in particular, and me we are prepared to give it a miss.
Giving up this year in hope of many more.

I returned to UK in 2013 after living abroad for 13 years. I have not had a holiday since returning. I have not been outside my flat since I came out of hospital in February.

Marmight Sun 06-Sept-20 13:15:24

Greengran. I too want to get back to Oz. Looks as if it'll be at least next summer, if there’s not another spike, until they’ll consider opening their borders to international visitors sad. Thank heavens for Whatsapp/Facetime etc...

hulahoop Sun 06-Sept-20 13:18:02

Namibia hope you soon get your money back from Skye cottages you don't need this stress on top of illness .My son is still waiting for refund from Ryanair he cancelled in May it's disgusting how these companies are treating people .On holiday front we haven't had a holiday yet this year probably won't bother now ?

Kim19 Sun 06-Sept-20 13:18:11

I'm very tempted to a modest European destination but the thought of the journey there and back is a gigantic turnoff for me. Sure missing my little jaunts though.

larry5 Sun 06-Sept-20 13:37:23

I went on holiday for a week to Exeter with dh, dd, sil and Dgs. We had brilliant weather (the hot week in August) and it was lovely to spend time with family. Dh and I took dgs down to Exmouth by train and everywhere we went people were sticking to social distancing.

We are going to Warner’s at Cricket St Thomas in October and although it is very close (we live near Bath) I am really looking forward to going.
