Are you planning on holidaying this year?

We've been asked to speak to BBC Scotland this morning on holidays and how people are feeling about travel this year.
According to industry experts, travel bookings have begun in earnest and people are booking longer holidays and more multigenerational ones, families who have been unable to see each during the pandemic wanting to make up for lost time. What are your thoughts?

Once you have the vaccine will you feel confident about booking a holiday?

We have a small holiday apartment on a small island in the Canaries. My partner got stuck out there from March last year and only managed to get back home at the start of December. She had planned to spend all of the winter there every year with me going out as and when I fancied a bit of sunshine. She has successfully applied for Spanish residency which will make this possible. I’m not bothered about being there for more than a month at a time but can’t wait to get back there as soon as there are flights and I don’t have to have a pre flight test.
At the moment the cost of the private tests demanded pre-flight, the idea of a stick being pushed up my nose as part of a vacation and the stress of not knowing if the results will be back on time to fly puts me off. As soon as things are more back to normal I plan on being on the first flight.

Certainly not abroad.
Hopefully in our caravan , if things get better. Totally self contained with our own shower, toilet etc.
We have a house booked for end of May for all the family which was moved from last year but as there are 5 different households involved , I can’t see it happening this year.

Until things are vastly improved, I don’t think I’ll be setting foot in an airport or on a plane.

If the situation is considerably improved in the summer, we might do the same as last year and drive via Eurotunnel to a BiL’s huge place (plenty of space) in France. There’s usually an open invitation, but somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen this year.

I’d love to think of booking a U.K. seaside property in the summer for us, dd, SiL and little Gdcs, but we’ll see.

Not too bothered about abroad - though Greece in September would be lovely (warm sea, fewer people) - but dh would love to visit some (older) old friends in Mumbai and Melbourne - neither of whom might be around too much longer. He’d go on his own, though - I’ve done both of those before and really hate long haul/jet lag nowadays.

Visiting family would be my priority (within UK). Otherwise only likely to do day trips to the Norfolk coast this year and not expecting this to be until summer or even autumn. Too many unknowns in relation to new variants and how long vaccine remains effective for me to feel confident about booking anything further afield (although if teleporting was an option I'd be off to New Zealand in a shot!)

We have a caravan sited in Devon and as soon as it is allowed, we will be staying at it on various occasions until the autumn..
I have also read an article today regarding research by Public Health England which states that people who have previously had covid have at least 90% protection against catching it again and together with vaccination, is good protection. We have had covid, and while we will continue to follow the rules, it does give us a glimmer of hope of having time away from the same 4 walls, albeit exchanging for the walls of the caravan! However, there are lovely isolated forest walks right outside of the caravan door, which is a vast improvement on pounding grey streets at home and I can't wait to get back to those.

We hope to, COVID permitting, but it will be only in the UK. Basically 2 hols we booked for last year which have been forwarded to this year

Greeneyedgirl Thu 14-Jan-21 11:08:11

We booked last year for a cottage in Cornwall in March. Even if we are vaccinated by then and there are no lockdowns we won’t be going. No point if you can’t eat out normally or do the usual holiday things. Having had the vaccine or the disease, doesn’t mean you are “safe” or safe to others.

We always go abroad during the winter with the same small travel company. Sadly that will be out too, but I am concerned for the company.

I’m bucking the trend here. Ever the optimists we have booked flights and accommodation for 10 days in Ibiza in June. Why not? It’s something to look forward to and holiday insurance will kick in if it has to be cancelled.

Yours sincerely,
Pollyanna

I shan't go overseas but I may consider something in the UK in the Autumn. However, I shan't think about it until August, by which time more people will have been vaccinated and we shall know more how the land lies.

We have a glamping holiday booked in Wales for the end of May. This is a trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary and my husbands birthday and has been transferred from last year so ??we can still go. We also want to return to our much loved home in Greece where it is so much safer than here. As soon as we have had our vaccine and as soon as we can, we shall go, life is too short.

mphammersley Thu 14-Jan-21 11:32:17

USA is calling us! But for family reasons. Our granddaughter (our daughters first child at 45) was born December 2019. We were booked to fly to New York in January 2020 before lockdown was not mentioned, but my husband was diagnosed with heart block and was advised not to travel until he had a pacemaker fitted in February. He insisted I went on my own as they would all be over in April for his 70th. Obviously we all know how the rest of the year went. To make things worse he had an optical stroke just before Christmas and is recovering. He is so longing to see our youngest grandchild and just play with her, he is such a great Grandad with our other 3 grandchildren.
So hoping and praying for this very special emotional trip, but are not booking anything, or thinking of a date, and will not take any chances at all, but it is a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. Hoping the vaccinations are the very first tiny footstep towards this.
Whatever you are hoping and dreaming about, please stay safe, we have come so far.

I suspect that because of the new variant and possible further mutations, any sort of travel will be prohibited for months, if not years. I hope I’m wrong, but travel is likely to be a deeply bad idea for the foreseeable future. None of the vaccines give 100% protection and were developed for the original iteration of the virus.. Their effectiveness against the new strain is as yet unknown. We probably need to let go of the idea that vaccines are going to save us and enable us to get back to normal.

Mollygo Thu 14-Jan-21 11:37:45

Sarahmob we are much in the same position re the river cruise, except it was a golden anniversary. If it’s cancelled again and I’m almost hoping it will be, we’ll be asking for a refund. Actually, it’s not the cruise itself that worries me, more the flights to and from the UK.

I really want to go to Paris as father was French and always see it as my other country.
But Paris is in the same state as us and I know it won't be the same for a long time if ever. Little shops will have shut down, cafes closed, some permanently. So probably not this year maybe next year.

SueEH Thu 14-Jan-21 11:47:55

Yes, currently have Cornwall booked for July (rescheduled from last June) and Greece booked for September. Also went to Greece last September/October. And will book anything/anywhere else that I’m able to ... everything on a free cancellation/free flight amendment basis.

leeds22 Thu 14-Jan-21 11:54:51

Scotland and France booked but not holding my breath. I will be climbing the walls if I don't get away this year.

SusieB50 Thu 14-Jan-21 12:02:10

My DS has sent me details of a villa in Spain ,they hope to have for a month in August , they have got 2 weeks refunded from last year and annual leave carried over . They would like me and DD and GC to go for a week . Full refund if Covid still preventing travel . I will be vaccinated , so I’m up for it - if I wait too long I will be too decrepit to do anything . Sadly I think I will have to delay again going to Cape Town to visit my cousins though .My Pollyanna mode needs reviving too !

Ro60 Thu 14-Jan-21 12:05:33

Agree with dorsetcupcake. We don't know enough about the vaccine - how long will it cover us. does it truely cover the new variant here on the South Coast.
Will spend the summer trying to dodge all the tourists if last year is anything to go by.

TerriBull Thu 14-Jan-21 12:06:30

Rebooked our EasyJet cancelled flights to Portugal from last September when the airline approached us a while ago. So June this year, with a hotel on the Costa de la Luz booked with cancellation up to the last minute. I can't see it happening for us, June is probably too soon. If a semblance of normal life does return, will book somewhere in England, would love to go abroad, but don't fancy wearing a mask for hours en route. We were very lucky last year and managed a week in Devon in September the weather was fantastic, far better than gloomy August when every one else went. Yeah hope to go somewhere but will play it by ear.

Alioop Thu 14-Jan-21 12:13:51

The owner of the house we normally go to sent a message last October asking did we want to book our usual dates for this year, but we declined until we see how this all goes. No doubt it will be booked up by then, so home it shall be. We noticed she hiked the prices up too because a lot probably doing staycations again.

WOODMOUSE49 Thu 14-Jan-21 12:16:12

Short holiday on Isles of Scilly last April to celebrate my 70th was booked and all paid. We postponed it to take this coming April. If we've had our vaccinations I'll feel OK.

We had an inheritance just over a year ago and planned to treat ourselves to holiday in New Zealand this year. I think we will postpone booking it until 2022.

Craftycat Thu 14-Jan-21 12:21:41

Not a chance. Even if it all clears up quickly- which it won't- I would be very nervous to travel abroad.
Even if we could my DH has to look for another job when this is all over as his contract with previous employer ended just when all this started.

Happysexagenarian Thu 14-Jan-21 12:22:42

In one word NO!
I agree with Ellanvanin. Absolute madness to go travelling anywhere this year, it's just going to perpetuate the presence of the virus. Any sort of leisure travel into or out of the UK should be banned. If we really want to be rid of this virus we need to be a LOT tougher about lockdowns, travel and our border controls. We are an island nation after all and should be able to do this.

Stella14 Thu 14-Jan-21 12:39:38

I hope so. We would feel confident to do so when we have had our two shots of vaccine. We’ll be looking at the situation in any country we are considering traveling to though. We would only travel to a country with low rates. Based on how things have been so far, that may be Asia.

Theoddbird Thu 14-Jan-21 12:41:24

I think everyone should spend their money in our own country to help hospitality get going again. Hospitality has been hit the hardest. So if we can travel make it in the UK.
