on red list.
Yes, it was on the news.
Portugal is moving to the Amber list next week, (Tuesday 8th I believe).
At least it gives folks on half-term breaks time to return without facing quarantine.
“ At least it gives folks on half-term breaks time to return without facing quarantine.”
Yikes, that sounds more like bad news than good?

and this is exactly how Covid spreadsand dangerous variants appear here, again and again
they should have to quarantine and have PCR test, + PCR tests on day 2 and 8. They would have been mixing with people from many parts of the world and not social distancing.
Holidays abroad should have been banned all last year and also this year.
Nobody will do as they're told will they ? They just can't wait !
Some folks travel for work and to visit family it’s not just about jolly holidays
Viruses mutate, regardless of overseas travel.
Red? I think it is amber isn’t it?

Red? I think it is amber isn’t it?
Yes it is, but doesn’t make such a sensational OP

on red list.
Another alarmist OP - not true, exaggerated, molehill, mountain... complete the well known saying yourselves
From the BBC website:
Portugal will be removed from the UK's green travel list from Tuesday, amid rising coronavirus cases and concern over a "Nepal mutation of the so-called Indian variant ".
It will join the amber list, meaning holidaymakers should not visit and returnees must isolate for 10 days
Seven nations - including Egypt, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka - will join the red list, with the toughest travel rules
Yep, Portugal is going on the amber list from Tuesday next. It’s a shame India didn’t go on the red list as quickly. Britain is in the position it’s in simply because of a delay in adding India to the red list.
A 3 word opening post and not one of them accurate!

It’s almost becoming a habit, isn’t it?
Rather sad really when you have to post something/ anything on GN irrespective of the truth.
My daughter is breathing a huge sigh of relief - she got back from her holiday in Portugal last Friday! She stayed in a villa and said the local towns and villages had very, very few tourists and restaurants and activities that would normally be taking bookings or have long queues were virtually empty.
Haven’t been able to see my family in Germany or Holland for over a year. We keep in touch via internet, decided visiting each other was unnecessary during a pandemic. To help keep all safe.
Totally agree Ellanvanin. We should all holiday here until it settles everywhere-it’s not like we can’t holiday here quite happily
But it's not just about holidays is it hamster58? People have to travel abroad for work, business and families too.

Red? I think it is amber isn’t it?
apologies mokryna- my husband told me he had just heard it on BBC- I should have checked first.
As argued by Richard Madeley and others- the concept of 'amber' is just totally nonsensical. To say it is 'amber' so allowed but you really should not go- is ambiguous and plain daft.
However, yes, amber not red, and apologies again.
I feel that booking a holiday abroad is quite a gamble at present . And when you gamble, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
Surely when you make a decision to live in a different country from your family, you accept there may be reasons that you can't visit your loved ones? I know that nobody could have foreseen it was going to be for so long and I accept that it is hard but ensuring the greater good of stopping the spread of this virus is more important.
Travel to and from abroad should be banned, and should have been from the beginning.
Too many people have paid a heavy price for the lax attitude of this governments behaviour.
Holidays abroad are not essential.
Too many people are citing 'special circumstances' to get on flights. Marriages abroad can wait, funerals are not essential to attend - we can pay our respects in other ways.
There are people still travelling to and from India for ridiculous reasons - and coming back via other routes to avoid the quarantine regulations. We are like a leaking sieve.
We all want to get back to 'normal' and we'd have got there a lot quicker if our islands had been shut down - so easy to do in island nations.
People have to travel abroad for work, business and families too
Much business can be done via internet links. Families just have to wait until the all clear is given. All our families are important to all of us.

But it’s not just (?) a case of “it’s allowed but you really should not go”.
You don’t seem to have taken on board that it is about recreational travel abroad.
And yes, you can travel to amber or even red list countries- and take the necessary precautions on your return
The government’s traffic light system is now in place for overseas travel, and is set to be reviewed every few weeks. In the latest update, popular holiday destination Portugal was removed from the green list and downgraded to the amber list from Tuesday 8 June. Holidaymakers visiting destinations on the green list do not have to quarantine when they return to England, making planning a trip easier this summer. However, before booking, you still need to consider the country’s entry requirements. Many of the green list countries or territories currently do now allow leisure travel from the UK. Those returning from green list destinations such as Gibraltar and Iceland will need to take a pre-departure Covid-19 test and a PCR test on or before day two of their return. Previous Which? research has found private test requirements can add hundreds of pounds to the cost of a trip. Arrivals from countries on the amber list will need to quarantine at home for 10 days, in addition to forking out for tests before and after their trip. The government has said you should not travel to amber list destinations for leisure purposes Arrivals from countries on the red list must quarantine for 10 days in government managed hotels which cost £1,750 per person. Countries on this list include the Maldives, Egypt and Turkey. You should not travel to red list countries or territories for leisure purposes^
