Desperate for a holiday

Life is a risk, I ride my horse, I think that’s more of risk, which I’m happy to take the risk, live life! I go every day to the stables, 20 people running around, sorting horses out, riding together, chatting away …not one of them has fallen off their horse or caught covid since March 2020! I have family who work the travel industry, so I’m thinking of them, money makes the world go round! just heard on the news ppl who’ve been vaccinated from amber can visit us with the need to quarantine! But they won’t cause it’s too expensive!

We’ve booked three short breaks this year in the UK and DD 2 x 1 week holidays (school age children) prices as normal.

I’m thankful we had four overseas holidays in 2019 culminating in a trip to Australia for my niece’s wedding. We love travelling overseas. OH’s job involved international travel. During my work vacations I would fly out to see him in places like Egypt.. I also regularly visited Australia where a lot of my family live. So I am missing going away. We have a holiday booked in Italy for September (which we had to postpone from last year) but we are unsure what’s happening there currently. And yes, I enjoy being at home too, but that was mainly when I worked full time and I’m retired now.

No I am certainly not desperate for a holiday and if I was would choose to holiday in the UK at the moment. Certainly would not risk going abroad right now. Each to their own we all have to weigh up the risks and do what we feel is right for us.

I do not greatly miss going on holiday - I live in what I consider to be the most beautiful place in the world and we always used to come back saying why did we do that, this is so lovely?

And now I am on my own, the whole business is far more difficult.

But, having been brought up by the sea, I do miss that - and will try to get away somewhere by the sea for a few days.

We too are missing our planned holidays; both just retired, no longer with elderly parents to care for, but may leave it for a while. I am not too bothered about having to quarantine back here to be honest, but would be worried about trying to find somewhere to stay in Spain for example if one of us tested positive pre -flight home. I won't be holidaying in the UK though due to crowds and prices, but will just use my back garden and support local pubs and restaurants who need our custom.

Good idea. Now that theatres etc are opening up there's lots of things to do unless you live miles away from anywhere.

Fine for you to take a risk with your own life/health OP, my point is that you are also taking a risk with the lives and health of others rather than have a perhaps more expensive but less risky holiday in the UK at present. No-one is saying you can never have your three holidays a year abroad again but I don’t see many here sharing your desire to holiday abroad at present. In fact by the time you factor in the cost of tests, possible quarantine and possible damage to your business is a UK holiday really any more expensive? However as I said I live a long way from you (north Norfolk, have you tried it?) you’re not a risk to me!

It's interesting what holidays mean to different people. For me, a week or two on a beach is not my idea of pleasure. I burn very easily and can't stand the sand getting on my body as soon as I've covered myself in sun cream. it means you have to go back into the sea to wash it off and then start the process again.
I lived by the sea when I was little and loved pottering around in the rock pools and playing in the sea. When we lived in Suffolk we used to leave home at around 5.30pm to drive to the coast- usually Walberswick - and pass all the day trippers setting off for home.

Now I much prefer cities and visiting museums and galleries and people watching. For me it's my mind that needs a rest and not my body.

Germanshepherdsmum, I am sure that some people may be even more ultra cautious than you , and you might be uncomfortable if they accused you of being a risk . OP not breaking any laws, rules or regs , she just has a different mindset from you all on travel and doesn’t deserve to be told she is a risk to others.

The thing is, the world is changing. Between covid and global warming, we can't fly off with impunity anymore. I'm an overseas teacher, grounded in the UK because of this. Life isn't going back to the old carefree, wasteful, polluting way it was before. At least, it isn't if we want there to be a liveable world for our grandchildren.

Exactly. If OP goes abroad she will take all the necessary precautions. I’d rather encounter her than an anti vaxxer !

However much I love travelling abroad (not to lie on a beach by the way) I won’t be going for a while, but fully intend to in 2022.

Before Covid we went abroad several times a year and would love to do some again but even though we’re double jabbed we wouldn’t consider it at the moment. Just too risky for us and others. I know we’re lucky and have a comfortable home near the coast and others aren’t as lucky. We’ll be staying at home for the foreseeable future.

I'd definitely go abroad if I didn't have my dogs. Two of them are very old and I couldn't live with myself knowing they'd get separation issues and be bewildered. My lovely spaniel has dementia. It wouldn't be fair on them at all.

But people are leaving from all corners of the UK to go on holidays abroad. And how lovely for them!

If you're double jabbed and follow all rules then it's perfectly fine to want a holiday abroad.

Totally with GillT and Lucca on this. We’ve just had a week in Somerset before the schools broke up, and it was very nice, but definitely not the same as going abroad. We don’t sit on a beach all day when we go abroad, as Lucca says, it’s a different way of life, different food, different culture, different language, different history. There’s so much to enjoy and learn, and so many places to explore. Staying at home with the phone and WiFi off would bore me to death.

My son and his wife have had both jabs , they took off for Spain with the two youngest 8 and 13 , had a lovely few days then poor DIL went down with Covid ! They all are in isolation , DS is allowed out to get provisions , GD has it now ! Son assures me they are all fine ! Room has a balcony, just not a great holiday for anyone , they can’t even book to come home , isolation counts from day that GD took ill , if he or GS take ill it’s another 10 days or till they all get negative tests , we are all mad that he didn’t listen to us , poor kids stuck inside , and the cost , plus time off from jobs

We’re going to Zakinthos in September, and we went to Kefalonia last September. I’m not afraid, we’re both fully vaccinated and we both unfortunately had Covid seven months ago. Before Covid we travelled abroad three or four times a year, and I loved seeing new places, meeting new people, and experiencing new cultures. I particularly enjoyed going to Japan and other Far Eastern countries. We’ve visited almost all the European nations and enjoyed them all. America, Canada, Australia, we’ve been lucky enough to visit them all. I will be extremely happy when we can resume travelling to all these places.

I’ve confused just trying to work out where I can and can’t go so it’s a week in Ireland and the odd night away in Yorkshire/Cumbria.

A vacation abroad is not a need
Secondly, covid - it is getting very ugly in Spain and whatever you may plan now, may not be possible when the date comes

I agree with you, GagaJo, much as I’m going to miss our old ways. We’re very lucky in that we’ve done a lot of travelling in the past, but had already talked about cutting it back dramatically before Covid struck.

We’ve just had a lovely seaside break in England - not at all crowded or expensive. And in September we’re off on the train to London for a few days. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the hotels we looked at were much cheaper than pre-Covid, so we’re staying for four nights instead of the two we’d planned.

Exactly like my friend. Shes run out of cash, but can't come home until she gets a negative test, so is having to borrow money. All because she wanted a holiday. She's double vacced so I think assumed she'd be safe.

What do you mean OP, ‘the risk, if there is any’? Of course there’s a risk, not only to you but to those with whom you come into contact. Glad you’re in Wales, a few hundred miles from me.

Im not actually going to come anywhere near people, I’m going to sit on a beach. you can catch it on holiday in the UK you know? I’m glad your not my neighbour! My elderly parents tested positive for covid, before a cruise last month, and they were not even ill, and yes they’ve double jabbed, and yes they still here! I’m not living in fear of catching the covid flu, life too short…..

i have never been abroad all my holidays i spent in the uk, i live in a large city in scotland, i would love to be able to travel around scotland and even some places in england, i spent a month at hawick in the borders and went to jedburgh, selkirk and melrose, why can't people in the uk just have a holiday in the uk, maybe by next year it will be easier to go abroad, with what other people are saying i think it would be so stressful to go abroad this year.

My lot would be better off at home if they had caught it here , not stuck in a room , they would have the run of the garden and garden
