The first one I’ve heard of this year, will that put you off if you were thinking of booking?

A cruise would be my idea of hell.
MissAdventure I laughed out loud to your comment!

It’s the things and places I’ve seen when on a cruise that I loved. One cruise from HongKong to Singapore, visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand on the way. I’m not sure I’d have visited those countries independently like we do Europe or America. Also Alaska and no way would I have seen Glacier Bay, it was awe inspiring. As were the fiords, or sounds as they’re called in New Zealand. Amazing experience! We also cruised around Japan, loved it. Also we had a day in Shanghai on that cruise, and two days in Taiwan. Taiwan was fascinating.
Cruising opened up these places for me. I thought I’d never see them.

Aonk & Aveline have great times. I'm hugely envious but, hopefully, it won't be too long for me.

Aveline Thu 10-Mar-22 17:23:06

Thanks volver somehow I could tell that you weren't a cruise type of person! Actually, you might surprise yourself if you went on the right cruises. Comfortable stateroom, only unpack once, great food, soothing sea views, interesting places to visit, lectures and interesting talks. I could go on...

Aveline

Luckily, lots of others do agree it would seem. Our cruise is sold out.

You wouldn't get me on a cruise for love nor money wink. Not a ship person, myself.

However I have friends and relatives who swear by them. One who has already been on a cruise a few months ago and was so happy with it.

Have a lovely time Aveline. ?

I know of several retirees who have had Covid in this last month. A hacking cough, a head cold with glue-mucus, a razor-blade throat seem to be the worst of their symptoms. No one has had loss of sense of smell or taste and no one has been ‘poorly’ as such. Whatever it has mutated into it seems bearable. Those half dozen I’ve known have been doubled jabbed and boostered which must have helped mitigate their symptoms. It certainly doesn’t seem to be anything scary.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 10-Mar-22 16:18:33

Well that’s your choice isn’t it? Just don’t expect a lot of people to agree just now!

Aveline Thu 10-Mar-22 16:14:19

farmor15 how many people take a PCR before going supermarket shopping or on public transport?! We've done what we can to mitigate risk and assume others on board will too. Actually they have to as it's compulsory. We're happy to take our chances rather than be shut up at home for years more.

Urmstongran Thu 10-Mar-22 16:04:58

Apparently the over 55’s are the demographic most at risk of catching Covid at present.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Mar-22 15:58:20

Cruises are like marmite. You either love them or you don't. I wouldn't want to go on one but my friend goes every year and has a great time.
Anyone booked on one have a good time.

Farmor15 Thu 10-Mar-22 15:36:02

aonk and Aveline - unfortunately PCR tests are not 100% guarantee, as they are usually taken 72 hours before departure. In the meantime, people could be infected and be incubating Covid before they get on board. From my own experience, it was only 48 hours between exposure (granddaughter) and slight symptoms and positive antigen test.
Most cruises will probably be Covid free, but with 100s of people, there is a real chance that one person might bring it on board.

I particularly enjoy meeting new people and cruises are a nice way to do that. We don't go on huge ships and avoid those ones with pubs and casinos and climbing walls etc. Our preferred cruiseline tends to suit people like us. It's tastefully decorated, understated and with masses of space (like myself!!) There are many quiet corners if you want to find a nice space to read or just stare at the sea. Good food too as well as interesting places to visit at our own pace. Oh I can hardly wait now !!

BlueBelle Thu 10-Mar-22 14:25:26

aonk I hope you have a wonderful time but you don’t need to be so defensive That’s your choice of holiday ! Great but for me and some others being locked away with people not of choice on the high seas would be a nightmare and we ve every right to comment wether we ve been or not been
I ve never fought in a war thankfully but I ve every right to comment about it

aonk Thu 10-Mar-22 14:16:48

Yes I do think they were but Covid is still with us. The only way to be completely sure is to lock yourself down. Anything else brings risks. Many cruise ships are operating now and I’ve only heard of this outbreak. The ship I’m going on has been operating on the same route sine November and so far nothing has gone wrong.

aonk Thu 10-Mar-22 14:01:15

I should add that mask wearing will be strictly enforced which is regrettably not happening at home.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 10-Mar-22 13:59:18

Don’t you think that the crew and passengers on the ship mentioned in the OP were fully vaccinated and tested aonk?

aonk Thu 10-Mar-22 13:54:42

I think that only those who have been on a cruise before are qualified to comment. I’m just about to go on one and will feel safer than I do in my home town. Every passenger and crew member will be fully vaccinated and no one can embark without a PCR test. You can’t say that about places I visit at home such as the supermarket, restaurant etc.

Aveline Thu 10-Mar-22 13:50:33

Ah the classics- 'Petrie dish'- I wondered when that one would be posted grin
I'll let you know if somehow we survive!

Esspee Thu 10-Mar-22 13:48:06

It would be like sailing in a Petrie dish at the moment.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 10-Mar-22 13:41:18

Going on a cruise is my idea of the holiday from hell.

kittylester Thu 10-Mar-22 13:36:28

We love River Cruises but are not thinking of it for a good while yet.

Aveline Thu 10-Mar-22 12:41:20

We're off in a river cruise next month. Ocean cruise booked for November. We're vaccinated, boosted and have to take PCR before travelling.

Ailidh Thu 10-Mar-22 12:21:28

I'm not a cruise lover either - I had a friend who raved about them but her idea of fun was my idea of hell.

However, even if I loved cruises, I still wouldn't be ready to go on one yet for this reason - either becoming ill or having the whole thing cancelled. Nope, not yet.

Grannynannywanny Thu 10-Mar-22 12:05:01

I’m pining for my annual trip to Ireland. That would be the perfect sailing experience for me.
