Suggestions for good places to visit in Wales, please.

MrsKen the gallery is Ffin y Parc, just outside Llanrwst. A lovely old house where many excellent artists exhibit. The cafe is lovely and they also have a few holiday cottages to let. It’s all owned by two lovely young men who are very knowledgeable about the art.

Cardiff the capital is good and then get a water taxi from the city centre to Cardiff bay which has the Techniquest science museum and lots of little shops and restaurants, the centre has a good museum and art gallery, and good shops and there are plays/ concerts at the Millenium stadium.

The Gower peninsula has beautiful beaches or drive a bit further for the west coast at Tenby and go over by boat to Lundy Island, all the Tenby pubs do great fresh crab.

The Wye Valley is lovely visit Abergavenny and Brecon and see the beautiful Brecon Beacon mountains and drive up to see the town of Hay which has a great book festival.

Llandudno and Aberystwyth are historical seaside towns in North Wales and St David’s is Wales smallest city. They are all very different I hope you find lots to enjoy.

If you like castles then Caernarvon Castle is the most spectacular. There is also Harlech Castle not too far from Portmeirion. In fact there are castles everywhere in Wales.

If you venture along the Lleyn Peninsula to see Abersoch then go further out to Aberdaron, where the pilgrims stopped on their way to Bardsey Island. You can see the island at the tip of the peninsula. All very historic.

If you go to Llangollen there is the best steam railway anywhere going along the valley. You can stop for lunch at The Grouse Inn at Carrog, the most beautiful village in Wales. All my ancestors came from there.

Just one more, on the way to the Lleyn Peninsula you will find another castle at Criccieth, home of David Lloyd George, and nearby you'll find his home and grave.

You need to base yourselves in Machynlleth, a lovely town and bang in the middle so North and South are reachable. Castles in North Wales are out of this world.

If you manage to get to Portmeirion, and would like to see a little more of Clough Williams Ellis's architecture, you can go and have a look at his private gardens at Plas Brondanw. There is castle folly you can explore, that he built up on the hill as a homage to the fire fighters who saved his home from fire and sometimes, his house is open to the public too, but check on their website for dates.
From there, it's a beautiful drive onto Beddgellert, where you can have lunch by the river and learn how Beddgellert got it's name. It's a stunningly beautiful area.

As you are doing a road trip in Wales in August be prepared for lots of traffic and difficulty parking. Wales as a holiday resort is my favourite place in the UK but we always go when there are no school holidays. Like Cornwall everywhere you want to go to may only be a few miles away but these are Welsh miles, meaning the nearer you get to your destination the further away it is, due to the twisty, turny over the mountains roads. So do lots of planning. Not mentioned so far, Llangollen Canal trip, which sails over Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a wonderful experience. Any rail trips, including up Snowdon have to be booked in advance.

Another one.... the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Steam train goes from Porthmadog to Beddgelert, Tan y Bwylch, Blaenau Ffestiniog and out the other way to Caernarvon. All of the train journeys are fabulous.

If you take the train to the top of Snowden, irrespective of the weather at sea level, take a cardy or jumper. It can change drastically.
I once gave a little girl a jumper as all she had on was a light summer dress: she was shivering.

Cardiff Castle is also bang in the city centre and is really interesting, the National museum of Wales is just around the corner and has some interesting pieces of artwork and Rodin' s statute of "The Kiss" St Fagans museum is just outside the city centre and the Principality stadium is also within walking distance, if you then go down to the Cardiff bay area there are boat trips and the Millenium theatre is worth a look around even if not going to a show and the Senedd Building ( Welsh Parliament) is free to look around . If you want scenery and beaches Barry island ( where Gavin & Stacey was filmed) is just a few miles away and the Gower and the Brecon area is about and hour away. Enjoy your stay.

Most children love the idea of Castell Coch.

My partner lives in Pembrokeshire and there are lovely beaches and castles such as Pembroke, Carew and Picton. We visited Picton last week for the first time last week and they have a beautiful walled garden and a great tour. Newport sands, Fishguard and Strumble Head lighthouse. Take a look at North Pembrokeshire tours. Everyone heads for Tenby but there is so much more. Pembrokeshire sunflower farm near Cardigan is in my list too. Have fun x
